This is the first year Wrenshall has run a Gender-Sexualities Alliance club. I interviewed the co-advisors as well as the student leader of the group, and they told me about the importance of this group to the Wrenshall community. At first they were reluctant to share details, likening the group to a secret society, but eventually they came around and let me in on what they do in their tight-knit community. English teacher Ted Conover and media library assistant Chloe Swanson co-advise the...
Ellie Swanson's photojournalism class at Wrenshall High School, where the yearbook is produced, has students collaborating on a spread called "Face It." The class borrowed a backdrop and asked the district to purchase two umbrella lights. "Thus, our small studio was built," Swanson said. "We have never had access to lights and a backdrop before, but with some help from YouTube, my students were soon capturing great portraits in our little studio." Pictured here are some of the faces the...
Annie Dugan's recent column about what people are reading in the Wrenshall community got me thinking about libraries in schools. It's been a while since I've student-taught, but I can clearly remember the day I asked to see the library and was told the K-8 school did not have one. The readers I know...

Organizations have learned to find creative solutions to new challenges, including Business Professionals of America, a competitive organization that allows middle- through post-secondary students to compete in business, marketing, and technology events at regional, state, and national levels. Wrenshall High School has had a BPA team for the past several years. Started by Kelly Bonitz, now at...
Within the last two years, the Carlton and Wrenshall school districts have combined their football, cross country, and football cheerleading programs under the Raptors mascot. This year, they are continuing their work together by launching another collaboration, this time in the classroom. Carlton and Wrenshall secondary special education students will have the opportunity to learn together in Wrenshall under the guidance of special education teacher Aaron Lattu and paraprofessionals Debbie Bous...
The City of Wrenshall is running a wellness challenge in an effort to get community members outside and moving. The idea was conceived in a brainstorming session with the new parks/community committee. Outgoing mayor Donna Mae Weiderman reports that the response has been positive. "It really is a way for people to get outside while social distancing yet still feel connected as a community." Pandemic restrictions have a definite impact on physical activity. Wrenshall community members responded...
