Marilyn Olesiak Keihl has a recipe for rhubarb cake in the last Lake Country Power newsletter. Sounds delicious. Volunteers are needed for Wednesday, Nov. 27 at the school for playground duty from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. so the entire staff can enjoy the annual Thanksgiving dinner. Contact the school if you are willing to help at 218-644-2727. Congratulations to Ari Dahl on her State cross-country race. She placed ninth at the Section 7A meet and 39th at State. Dylan Nyberg was named Offensive Player of the Year in the 9 North All District team an...
Congratulations to David Finnila of Wright, on being inducted into the 2024 Minnesota State Auctioneers Association. The Reinhardt Auction Service employee attended auctions in his high school years, and he found that they needed help, and that’s where the seed was planted. You can read the full story in the most recent Reinhardt Auction bill. Our sympathies to the family of Stephanie Larson, 37, who died on April 14, 2024, after a hard-fought battle with cancer. Her parents are Todd and DiAnn Larson of Cromwell. The Cromwell Area Community C...
I’m sure that as you are reading this, you are thankful for the completion of the two box culverts between Cromwell and Wright. I had to take the detours only occasionally, but now that I don’t have to, I sure am thankful for the direct route to Cromwell from my home in Wright. I’m sure there were many folks who had to take the detours almost every day on their way to work or other appointments. I’m proud to announce that Cromwell mayor Sharon Zelazny received the 2023 Carlton County Outstanding Senior award at the Carlton County fair on Aug....
It’s been a couple of weeks since I have been able to get some news into my columns. It’s not because I didn’t want to but because I just couldn’t. I was in the hospital for 12 days in July and have been taking antibiotic treatments every day since for an infection in my colon. Hopefully that is cleared up and I can now proceed with the cancer surgery. It’s been a long-haul, but I’m looking forward to a full recovery in the near future. There was an annual Wright Co-op store meeting Aug. 2. As far as any other news in the area, I have been o...
My cancer journey has started in earnest now. Last week, I had my first chemo treatment, and this week I get chemo and a PET scan. Lots to absorb in the brain and body as this journey continues. Thanks for all your prayers and support. A beautiful memorial service for Don Oman was held May 6 at Bethany in Cromwell. Family and friends shared memories and gave thanks to his wife, Jeanne, for all the volunteer work they did in our community over the 15 years they lived on Cross Lake. Rest in peace, dear friend. Send cards of condolence to Jeanne O...
Salutations, friends: I am now embarking on a journey that I am not looking forward to. As of a few weeks ago, I was diagnosed with Stage 2 triple-negative aggressive breast cancer, so I will be starting chemotherapy and getting a PET scan. Chemo will be once a week after that. I had to give up subbing for now, which hurts, as I love the students and staff and will really miss them. I never imagined I’d get cancer, but I caught it early and it is what it is, so I’m trying to stay positive. Thanks for all the words of encouragement and prayers,...
The lawn in front of the Wright post office looks like a dried-up desert with all the weird trails the voles made as they crawled under the snow this winter. As soon as the snow melted, this phenomenon was revealed. Now you will have to wait until this latest snow melts before you can see it again. Our yard is so covered with pine needles and broken branches after this winter. It’s really a mess and will have to be picked up before any mowing can be done. By the way, remember “No Mow May.” Let’s let the pollinators have the dandelions and suc...
Congratulations to the fourth graders of the Cromwell-Wright School on collecting $1,906.29 and six large boxes of non-perishable food items for the Tri-Community Food shelf. They exceeded their goal of $1,200 and they thank everyone who participated by donating. On April 6 Tony Bastien came and spoke with the eighth-grade health class about his job as an narcotics and substance abuse investigator in Carlton County. He talked about the different types of drugs present in Carlton County and the...
Many years ago, when I was still teaching fourth grade, I had my students interview elders and write their life stories. One year, a student interviewed Ruth Karki, who lived south of Cromwell. When asked how old she was, she told him that she was as old as Highway 73 “and in better shape.” So, with that in mind, please attend the Minnesota Highway 73 corridor study open house in person April 12, at 5 p.m. at the Cromwell Pavilion. (It was scheduled for this week, but held only online due to weather.) There will be a formal presentation on pos...
The Tri-Community Food Shelf in Cromwell is participating in Minnesota FoodShare's March Campaign through April 9. According to its website, the March Campaign is the largest grassroots food and fund drive in the state, “bringing together organizations, businesses, faith communities, and individuals to help stock and support the capacity of nearly 300 food shelves.” Please consider helping out by donating to a cause that helps keep our residents and neighbors nourished. The Villa Vista/Cardinal Court will be having their annual Good Friday wor...
It sure is nice to have more daylight in the evenings. Now maybe the snow will stop falling and we can get onto the season of spring. Congratulations to the UMD women’s basketball team on making it to the Division II Final Four. We can be proud of Cromwell’s Taya Hakamaki, as she is a key member of the team. A great number of folks attended the gathering of family and friends for Gary Oja on Saturday, March 18 at St. John’s. I heard that at least 16 of his classmates from Cromwell-Wright School attended in support of the family. Gary was laid...
This month is interesting, as it has several dates that are palindromes, such as 3-2-23, 3-20-23, 3-21-23, 3-22-23. That means they can be read forward and backward and still be the same. Also, the first day of spring is March 20.. Summer weather can’t be far off now, although with all the recent snowstorms, it’s difficult to imagine. Our sympathies to the family of Gary Lee Oja, 68, who died March 6. He was reunited with his mom, Maxine Oja, his dad, Henry Oja, his grandparents and other relatives. A private family burial was scheduled for...
Congratulations to John Dahlman on having a couple of his “Blue Ice” photographs published in the February-March issue of Lake Superior Magazine. Blue ice results when heavy snow falls and is compressed, and the air bubbles are squeezed out, enlarging the ice crystals. This enlargement is responsible for the ice’s blue color. Congratulations to Pimpa Gresczyk on passing her U.S. citizenship test. Her citizenship induction will be held later in March. Lenten services will be held on Wednesdays at Bethlehem Lutheran Church on March 8 and 22, a...
Join us the evening of Friday, March 3 to celebrate Read Across America with a book exchange in the Cromwell-Wright school library 4 to 5:15 p.m.! Bring 2-3 books collecting dust on your shelf to share with a new family, and take home a handful of new-to-you books to enjoy! Title 1 will provide a light snack and drink to enjoy while we work on a craft project for the kids to take home. There will be a home boys basketball game that evening, so we will be providing a free bag of popcorn coupon to families that attend the book exchange. See you...
Eureka! I have found it. What, you may ask? Well, a couple of weeks ago, I misplaced one of my handheld landline phones and have been looking for it ever since. I looked all over the house, the basement and even in the van and the garage just in case I set it down somewhere when doing something outside, but no luck. And this time I couldn’t blame my late husband Bob for losing it either. I was resigned to giving up, and then my granddaughter’s words came back to me again: “Don’t worry, Grandma, it will show up!” Well, on Thursday while lyi...
Our sympathies to the families of Arvin Anderson, Dolly Niemi and Margaret Webster who recently passed away. Margaret Webster’s daughter, Kaija, texted from Antarctica that Margaret passed away Feb. 9 in hospice at St. Luke’s. Her family is planning a celebration of life on May 27, hopefully at Bethany Lutheran Church. Ann Markusen visited her a few weeks ago when Margaret was in the nursing home. She seemed fine, and, toward the end, kept her eyes on the elevator doors, thinking Dan would be coming out of there at any moment. Hard losing suc...
Have you heard of serendipity? It’s an unplanned fortunate discovery. Well, that happened to me last Sunday. I had put a load of clothes into the washer and against my better judgment, I left it running while I went to church. I got home in a couple of hours and, you guessed it, the washer wasn’t able to discharge the water down the drain, and it ran all over the porch floor, soaking into the rugs and seeping all over. I quickly picked up the rugs and threw them outside and mopped up the floor. The next day I decided to clean the laundry room a...
Hey, I hope things are going well for you and yours. I am now living alone since my son and son-in-law went back to San Francisco. They had been with me since July, so now it seems strange to be alone, but good in some ways, too. Now I have time to do some of the things I had been putting off since Bob died. I’m sure some of you know what I’m saying. I will also be back doing community things and subbing from time to time. I did take a week off since the guys were leaving and I wanted to spend as much time as I could with them. We went to St....
The price of Forever stamps went up to 63 cents on Monday. So, how many of us send letters anymore? Well, I do. And the folks I write to sure appreciate getting actual letters from time to time. Even though a lot of greetings are now sent by email, an actual card with personal comments or notes sure is nice to send and receive. Early Childhood Family Education classes will run Feb. 14 through May 9. Please contact Mrs. Mayer at 218-644-3737 ext. 4134 or [email protected] if you would like to register your student. With deep sorrow, I’m a...
The Farmers Co-op store in Wright now has a new phone service provider, but the phone number is still 218-357-2251. If you need the number, put it into your contacts or write it down. Watch for updates on sales on Facebook. Margaret Webster is now living at the Aftenro Home at 510 W. College St., Duluth MN 55811. This year’s Cromwell-Wright homecoming candidates are Ellie Anderson, Avery Koivisto, Sascha Korpela, Taylah Pfisthner, Payton Rosbacka, Rowdy Egger, Noah Foster, Levi Hoover, Romain Jacques and Liam Schoenberg. Homecoming will be h...
A huge thank-you goes out to all the folks who donated to the Christmas Caring project sponsored by Pam and Ruth over Christmas. Gifts were distributed to many children who may not have had gifts without these contributions. This year’s homecoming candidates are Ellie Anderson, Avery Koivisto, Sascha Korpela, Taylah Pfisthner, Payton Rosbacka, Rowdy Egger, Noah Foster, Levi Hoover, Romain Jacques and Liam Schoenberg. Book Blast results are in and we are overwhelmed by the generosity of our Cromwell-Wright community. Our sincere thanks and g...
As you probably have noticed, the United States Postal Service has been having a lot of difficulties of late. Mail has not been delivered for days in some cases. Even our local post offices in Wright and Cromwell have had reduced hours due to staffing shortages. But at least we aren’t stuck in airports for days trying to get back home from Christmas trips. Let’s hope things improve in 2023. Lindsay Lally celebrated her 75th birthday on New Year’s Eve with a party and a houseful of family, neighbors and friends. There was glitz and glamo...
Our sincere sympathies to the family of Karee Hansen Rowell on her tragic death on Dec. 18 in Bullhead City, Arizona. Funeral arrangements are unknown at this time. According to the Mohave Valley Daily News, three people died following an apparent murder-suicide late Sunday, Dec. 18, at a Bullhead City home. Police said Timothy Wayne Albright, 64, of Cromwell killed his fiancée, Karee Pauline (Hansen) Rowell, 64, and her cousin, Trisha Lynn Wallin, 58, who lived in Bullhead City. He then shot himself, authorities said. Rowell and Wallin lived...
The past week has been tough for many folks in the area. We endured hours of snowstorms, and then the power was out, for as long as 72 hours for some. As for me, I lost electricity at 3 p.m. Thursday and it wasn’t restored until 8 p.m. Friday. It’s amazing how creative you must become to cope with this situation. First off, thankfully, we have a woodstove in the basement with plenty of dry wood, so our house never went below 65 degrees. I also have a gas range, so I was able to light it with a match to heat food and make the all-important pot...
There is a fact sheet available at the school on the upcoming Cromwell-Wright school district referendum taking place on Feb. 14 with voting at the Sno-Gophers building, or by absentee if requested. The plan is for three types of improvements: No. 1, safety and security improvements, including to the main entrance and building security, and improved configuration for bus and parent pickup and dropoff areas; No. 2, site and building improvements including site drainage improvements, pavement upgrades, additional parking spaces, bathroom...
