Well, another week is over and gone, and now November is almost gone too. It sure is weird when the sun goes down so early. It’s hard for me to stay awake after 7 p.m., but as we get used to Standard Time, I’m sure it will seem normal after a while. I got so many nice comments on Bob’s eulogy over these past few weeks. He was a kind and gentle man and we do miss him, but I can feel his presence in so many ways. Christmas came early at the Villa Vista and Cardinal Court last week as they celebrated family night on Nov. 16. This is an annual Chri...

It’s hunting season, which made me recall one of the scarier moments for my husband, Bob, and me. It was 1990 and our son, Garrie, got shot in the face with a .22 rifle on Nov. 10. When I found out, I didn’t even know my name when I called 911. But Garrie walked out of the woods with just a small stream of blood and a small hole in his upper lip. He ended up with a broken jaw and had to have it wired shut for six weeks after some extensive surgery. I never knew I could get that scared. Yoga resumes on Monday, Nov. 21 at Cromwell Park Pav...

We held a beautiful visitation and memorial service for my husband, Bob Hanson, on Oct. 21 and 22. I’ve been sharing a few stories about Bob taken from his eulogy. Here’s my final installment: When we first got married, I planted a small garden in the front yard. It was only about 25 feet by 25 feet. I guess Bob figured I liked gardening, so the next year he plowed up a half-acre of the yard and planted the garden. Well, that was way too much for me to take care of and since harvest time was at the same time school resumed, I didn’t do much...

We held a beautiful visitation and memorial service for my husband, Bob Hanson, on Oct. 21 and 22. Here are some additional passages I wrote and read from Bob’s eulogy: “Last Thursday, I was subbing in the fifth grade in Floodwood, and I wanted the kids to know that my husband had died so I might be a bit sad. But I also told them that I experienced a miracle today. I told them that I had misplaced the book, “Wild,” that I had been reading when school started, and when I walked into their room there it was on the teacher’s desk. It took a fe...

We held a beautiful visitation and memorial service for my husband, Bob Hanson, on Oct. 21 and 22. Friends and relatives came from miles around and made our day great. Yes, it was sad, but with all that comfort and support we feel good about Bob’s life and know he is in a better place. I even gave the eulogy, and our son, Curtis, read a poem by Rick Gresczyk. David Hedin shared memories of growing up as a neighbor to Bob on Center Road, and Lindsay Lally talked about the painting of Bob that was on display. Todd Carlson gave the message, Pat Ca...

After losing my husband of 52 years on Oct. 1, I had to postpone his memorial service since I got Covid-19. Sometimes I wonder, “What else can happen?” But, as my mother always said, “This, too, shall pass!” So, with that in mind, Bob’s service has been rescheduled for visitation 5-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, which will continue from noon until the 1 p.m. service Saturday, Oct. 22, all at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Wright. My sincere thanks to everyone who has sent cards, flowers and food. We are grateful for all these remembran...

It is with a heavy heart that I write this week’s news column. My husband of 52 years, Bob Hanson, died Oct. 1 in our home with me by his side. He had been bedridden for the past few months and was surely ready to go, but the reality of his passing is just starting to set in. We will have a memorial service this coming weekend. (See Bob’s obituary on Page 16 for details). This is also the anniversary of the first news column I wrote for the papers on Oct. 2, 1982. I started writing for the weekly papers and over these past years have taken ove...

It’s only the first week of autumn and we are already planning events for November and December. So, you can start saving your new and or gently used Christmas items for Bethlehem Lutheran Church’s annual bazaar, brunch and bake sale on Dec. 10. A local candidate informed me that voters who donate to candidates registered with Minnesota’s political contribution refund program can apply for a refund of up to $50 per person or $100 per couple by sending in a receipt and a special form signed by the recipient. Only six weeks now until the midte...

I had the opportunity to go to the Premiere Theatres in Cloquet to see the movie “Where the Crawdads Sing.” It is a very good movie, had some questionable scenes, but all in all told a great story with no bad language. I was also impressed with the new reclining seats in the theater. I was comfortable and felt safe with the extra-spaced seating. With being home most of the time now, it felt great to get away for an evening. You may also notice I have a red dress hanging out by the end of my driveway. This is to honor the missing Indigenous wom...

Grandchildren are wonderful gifts, and if you live long enough you get great-grandkids and maybe even great-great-grandkids. That is what we think of our grandkids, and now three great-grandkids. They were here for a visit last week and we made some wonderful memories. The great-grandkids — ages 4, 2, and 1 — were able to camp out in our yard and then spend the whole day with us along with their parents, making pancakes, chocolate chip cookies and playing with all the interesting toys and games I have for them. By the end of that day, I was...
