Boy, we went from freezing temperatures one week to temps in the 90s now. I guess that’s why we live in this area, you never know what the weather will bring. Let’s hope we get some rain soon, as the gardens need moisture. There will be a blood donation drive noon to 6 p.m. June 24 inside the Cromwell Park Pavilion. Call Ray Lally at 218-644-3739 to sign up for a time to donate. Because the drive is taking place inside the pavilion, there will not be a YOT Senior Dance until July 22. God...
The Floodwood VFW Post 8299 was at Wright Park for Memorial Day services. This year, Wes Heikkila was the honored veteran, as he passed away June 25, 2020. I also see that the veterans memorial in the Wright Park has been shored up. The parents of Cromwell-Wright students send a huge thank-you to all the teachers and staff for their extremely hard work and perseverance throughout the school year. Thank you for keeping our kids in the school to optimize their learning experience. Your hard work...
I see the veterans memorial in the Wright park is being restored to its original condition. This has been a very sad sight for the past few months, but it is now going to be the tribute it should be. The Floodwood VFW Post 8299 will be at the Wright park for Memorial Day services on May 31, at 8 a.m. to honor our veterans. This year, Wes Heikkila will be the honored veteran, as he passed away June 25, 2020. His inurnment was at the Prairie Lake cemetery. Bring your American flags and wear red, w...
Cromwell-Wright families, we are able to have three more exchange students for next year. If you would like to learn more about the world, but are not wanting to travel yet, host an exchange student. Call PAX coordinator Lori Wester at 218-343-8802. The last day of school at Cromwell-Wright is June 2, with graduation at 7 p...
It’s that time again when we need to meet to decide what events we are having at this year’s Wrong Days in Wright celebration. Here’s a summary of last Wednesday’s meeting minutes: Planning: Linda Kalli contacted several vendors to see if they are interested in attending Wrong Days. Linda sent a donation request to Fond du Lac for a stay at Black Bear. Linda asked Rick Gresczyk to follow up with them. Linda contacted George Burton regarding fireworks. They are available to do the show. We chos...
It’s that time again when we need to meet to decide what events we are having at this year’s Wrong Days celebration. Our first meeting was last Tuesday at Kalli’s. We will definitely need some more help, as Jake has retired from doing the steak fry and we still have no one to take over kids’ games and the coronation on Friday night. Please spread the word. If anyone is interested in helping out with the event, please let Linda Kalli know if you can help: 218-878-7876 or linda.k...
At the latest quarterly Carlton County Health and Human Services meeting April 12, I learned about the Covid-19 response here in Carlton County. According to HHS director Dave Lee, 50 percent of residents have been vaccinated, and we need to get about 5,000 more residents vaccinated to reach 70 percent. So, if you have yet to get vaccinated, please call the Minnesota Department of Health Covid-19 Public Hotline at 833-431-2053 or check the vaccination website vaccineconnector.mn.gov for more...

Spring has arrived, and how do I know? Well, I heard the frogs croaking April 6 in our pond in the yard. But I still haven’t seen a robin. I’ll keep watching for them. Did you know that you can have fresh, warm meals delivered to your home on Tuesdays? Volunteer Services of Carlton County is pleased to provide this service, and all you have to do is call 218-879-9238 by 2 p.m. Thursdays to order (please leave a message because of the great volume of calls). The Streetcar Kitchen in Carlton pre...
There will be a special memorial remembrance for Siiri Peterson at Bethany in Cromwell April 11, at the 10:30 worship service. Coffee and cake will be served in the Fellowship Hall, and all are invited to pay tribute to Siiri. It won’t be long before the hummingbirds return to our area. If you do put out feeders, remember to not use red dye in the juice you make for them. According to Birds & Blooms magazine, the red dye is very harmful to hummingbirds. The Cromwell-Wright School office is c...

I am still doing some subbing at Floodwood school and I want everyone to know how great the students are there. You can be very proud of your students, educators and the whole staff for doing a great job of educating kids and keeping everyone safe during these difficult times. Our sympathy to the family of David Alan Tveit, 68, of Floodwood who passed away unexpectedly on March 14 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth. In addition to working as a mechanic, David was a lifelong logger. Our sympathy t...
The Tri-Community Food Shelf will once again be participating in the Minnesota FoodShare March Campaign. This year's campaign runs through April 11. It is the largest food-and-funds drive in the state with approximately 300 food shelves/pantries throughout the state participating each year. Every dollar Minnesota FoodShare works to secure annually from corporations, individuals, foundations and businesses goes directly into the Minnesota FoodShare FoodFund. Those dollars are distributed to food...

The residents of the Villa Vista and Cardinal Court got their second Covid vaccine shots last week. Let’s hope this opens things up so the residents can receive more visitors soon. Find his obituary on Page 8 of this week’s paper. Condolences can be sent to his daughter, Sharon Lake, at P.O. Box 164, McGregor MN 55787 and t...
Cromwell mayor Sharon Zelazny asked me to pass along information about the Highway 210 project. The timeline for the project has changed. Testing in the area last fall revealed the need for some design changes. Instead of an early bid date, the project will be let in June since the secured project funding is for the 2021 fiscal year. Preliminary work is being done. The construction through town will start in the spring of 2022 with the goal of completing it in one season. Mayor Zelazny said...
I recently found a painting my great uncle Dave Larson did of his wife back in the 1940s, but it has an opaque coating of some kind that has made the painting difficult to enjoy to its best. So, I was wondering if anyone knows of an art restorer in the area? This painting would be a much-improved family treasure if fully restored. It looks like he put a clear coating over it and as the years went on it became cloudy. Sure seems strange not having any football games on national TV this weekend....
I have received several thank-yous for keeping my readers informed during these past 11 months of the stay-at-home pandemic. It seems that every week when I sit down to type this column, I don’t have that much to share, but when I get to writing there’s always some news to share. Also, thank you to all my faithful readers and folks that share their news with me so this column can keep going. Remember, we are all in this together and need to work together to make a brighter future. I had the oppo...

Wasn't the frost on the trees beautiful on Saturday? I couldn't resist taking a few photos of the white evergreens and the brilliant blue sky. It surely was a winter wonderland. Congratulations to Charles Kabus, son of Liz and Tom, who was recently chosen as one of the Students of the Month at McGregor Elementary School. He was deemed a responsible fourth- grader who is hard working in everything he does and shows kindness to all. Doug Suhonen reports that the Suhonen family has had a tough...
Have you ever thought about all the time we waste? Well, I heard a great story about wasting time and what not to do to avoid it. First, try to not wait in line for anything. Plan ahead and you will spend a lot less time waiting or maybe not have to wait in lines at all. Another waste of our time is owning a second home. Yes, it is always great to get away to that second home, but it is also a lot of extra work that you wouldn’t have to do if you owned only one home. Lastly, don’t waste tim...
As we come to the end of another year, I am longing for better times in the coming new year. I am also reminded of how much I am missing my closest relatives and friends who have passed away. I’m also missing so many folks because we can’t get together like we used to for now. My first memory of losing a dear person in my life was the passing of my dad’s mother, Minnie Dahlman, although I rarely called her by any name other than “Grandma.” During the school year, I would hurry off the school bus...
