The women’s basketball team from the University of Minnesota Duluth stepped off the court to help with a good cause last weekend. The team assisted in collecting toys for the Duluth Salvation Army on Dec. 5. Players said it is important to them to support the community who has also supported them during this very difficult year. Taya Hakamaki, of Cromwell, was one of the women who were interviewed for a television news story. She’s a part of the team with cousin Shaily Hakamaki. Taya said it was...
Congratulations to Katy Hakala on the shot of a lifetime when she recently bagged a huge buck Nov. 14 near their home. Her husband Matt helped her track the deer and she was glad he was there when they found it. This was Katy’s fourth deer, and first buck. A full story can be found in the Nov. 24 issue of the Voyageur Press newspaper. Also bagging really nice-sized bucks this hunting season were the Hutar/Mattson siblings, and Siiena Anderson shot her first buck this fall. Clothing Depot n...
We are saddened to hear of the death of our dear friend Elaine Rose Huhta, 86, longtime Cromwell resident. She passed away Nov. 13, the 64th birthday of her only child, Kevin Hamre. She taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Mora before spending the rest of her career as a second-grade teacher for Cromwell-Wright Schools. Please direct memorials to Lakes and Pines Community Action Council (1700 Maple Ave. E., Mora MN 55051) or to the Cromwell-Wright Dollars for Scholars fund in her name (5624 Hwy...
The lucky winner of this year’s quilt made by the Cromwell Area Cardinal Quilters, a patriotic “Quilt of Valor,” is Glenn Solomon, who now lives at Cardinal Court. Congrats to him, and thanks to all our active and retired veterans for their service. Congratulations to Bob and Lois Jobe on the birth of a great-granddaughter, born to Paul and Melissa Kyle on Nov. 4. Paul Kyle is the son of Barb and Kevin Kyle. Our sympathy to the family of James William Frank, 86, of Wright, who passed away peace...
My husband, Bob, came home last week after being gone for six weeks, after a stay in the hospital and five weeks at North Shore Estates in West Duluth. He could hardly wait to get back home, and I hope he behaves himself and doesn’t injure his back by lifting things he shouldn’t lift. Bob thanks everyone for the many cards and messages of encouragement that made the time go faster and being away from home easier to deal with. Congratulations to Pam Rahja, who retired Oct. 30 after more than 34...
Important news for Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Wright: The church council decided to hold in-person worship services only on the first Sunday of the month, due to recent low attendance, the pandemic, and the cold, darker winter months to come. This should be a savings on the fuel bill and also keep the congregation safer. Pastor Deb will resume 9 a.m. online services starting Nov. 8. We thank all for their participation and generous donations during the past nine months of the shutdown. Cole...
Sympathy goes to the family of Brian A. Holte, 40, of Anoka, who passed away Oct. 14 at his home. The preliminary autopsy showed that Brian had an enlarged heart. Send condolences to his mother, Judy Olson, at 1827 South Ferry St. Apt 214, Anoka MN 55303. Mary J. Purcell, 92, formerly of Wright, died Oct. 9 in Minnetonka. I sure am going to miss sending Mary this news article every week, as I did for the past five or six years after she gave up her computer access. I also will miss the letters...
Lisa Donelson, former Cromwell-Wright teacher, author, and former resident of Floodwood will present a program, “Signs of Encouragement,” at the Floodwood Baptist church at 7 p.m. Oct. 17. Many of you in the area may recall the huge sign in her yard featuring many sayings and quotes over the years. Everyone is welcome to attend. With the resumption of fall sports activities, the Cromwell- Wright football team played its first game last Friday and won in thrilling fashion, 15-14, over Car...
The 2021 Carlton County Historical Society’s barn calendars are available at the Pine Knot News office in Cloquet, Widdes Farm and Feed in Esko, and TJ’s in Mahtowa. You can also call Barb Dahl at 218-355-8644 or 644-3691. Calendars are $10 each. Three of this year’s featured barns are Mark Groth’s barn, the Samuelson barn and the Mattila brothers’ barn (now owned by Robert and Darci Dahl). I’m not sure, but I’m pretty sure that the late Carl Hanson built two of these barns back in the day. C...
There are lots of birthdays this month at Villa Vista and Cardinal Court in Cromwell. Roy Miller, formerly of Meadowlands, marked his 100th birthday on Oct. 8. He is living at the Cardinal Court and enjoys the company of many new friends. Roy was 72 years old when he got his first bicycle. It was a 21-speed mountain bike, although he says he never got it out of third gear. Larry (Lawrence Peter William) Switzer, 93, of the Cardinal Court, was born Oct. 4, 1927, in the Kettle River area. He went...
Our sympathy to the family and friends of Melissa Kalinoski, 42, of Cromwell, who died in a car crash Sept. 24 near Brookston. She was killed when a truck crossed over the centerline and hit her car head on. There will be a second auction of the items the late Larry Hamren collected over the years. It starts at 10 a.m. Oct. 3 under the Big Top in Wright. There will be antiques, glassware, lanterns and vintage furniture. There will also be an auction at Alice Lake’s home in Wright at 11 a.m. O...
It’s officially autumn. The summer seemed much longer than normal mainly due to this Covid pandemic. I’m sure we are all hoping for the time to pass quickly so we can get to the end of this disease, but as with most things, patience and staying safe is the best way to deal with all our restrictions. Please keep Bob (and me) in your prayers. He has two compression fractures and was in severe pain. He will probably have to go back to the nursing home for therapy and recovery. Have noticed tha...
On Sept. 11, 2001, I was sitting at my kitchen table while my nephew Nathan Dahlman was replacing our kitchen counters. My son Philip called and said: “Turn on the TV. A plane just hit one of the World Trade Towers in New York.” After tuning in, we sat in silence watching what we just couldn’t believe. This seems like a good time to reflect on the things our country has endured over our history and now we are dealing with fires, protest, hurricanes, and more. I recently got a call from Barb Dahl...
Happy Grandparents Day on Sept. 13. A grandparent is someone who cares for you and in all things you try to do. A grandparent always has a ready smile and is willing to go that extra mile. Remember your grandparents with laughter and joy recalling the days when you were a little girl or boy. Here’s a quote I read recently: “I wouldn’t change my grandchildren for the world, but I wish I could change the world for my grandchildren.” I remember my grandmother Minnie Dahlman well. She was my dad...
As I’m putting the finishing touches on this news column today, it’s my 75th birthday! That’s three quarters of a century! Or 27,394 days old, counting the 19 leap year days I added. My birthday was Aug. 31, and it sure feels weird getting to this age. When I was just 15 or 16 years old I never even thought of getting this old. But the years just keep rolling along! Now, we have to pray for a cure for Covid in the near future, although I think it may take another year or more. We don’t go anyw...
Congratulations to Brad Koivisto of Cromwell, who recently won the first Brainerd $10K Bracket National at the Brainerd International Raceway. This big payout attracted nearly 200 amateur racers and Brad outlasted them all. He raced his 1974 Chevelle GTO and usually races in the BIR’s stock/super stock class. Brad said he considered himself a longshot to win and was there to support the track and enjoy the weekend. But he soon found himself in the winner’s circle. After getting into the fif...
As I’m sitting here in front of my computer typing this week’s news, it is not without pain. I finally had my left knee replacement surgery on Aug. 5 at the hospital in Cloquet, after having it postponed twice due to Covid-19. Yes, I was happy to get it done and over with, but now the hard part, which includes therapy and recovery at home. It’s not that the exercises are hard to do, but I really have to push myself to stretch these muscles back into the best mobility as possible. I want to th...
With all the cancellations in the state, there is, sadly, another one we have to report. The annual Wounded Warriors United Minnesota event has been canceled. It was to have taken place at the Cromwell Park and Pavilion on Aug. 22. I talked with Logan Shiflett, one of the organizers, who said some riders might do the ride on their own, but there is no organized event this year. So, if you have a mind to donate to this worthy cause, please send your donations to Wounded Warriors United Minnesota,...
New, for those voting by mail: you no longer need a witness to sign your ballot. Ballots need to be returned to the courthouse by Aug.11, or at least postmarked by then to be counted. Also, remember that you must choose a political party and vote only that party. You can’t cross over in a primary election. There are three 4-year Cromwell-Wright school board positions to be filled beginning January 20, 2021. The terms of Angela Anderson, Tim Homstad and Brian Granholm are up. If you are i...
My husband, Bob, came home last week after six weeks away. He reached his physical and occupational therapy goals and was ready to be discharged. He will now be doing therapy at home as the nurses and therapists will be coming to the house. He thanks everyone for the many, many cards of encouragement. It is great to have him home again. Now, I will be home for a week before my knee replacement surgery, which is scheduled for Aug. 5, but I’m not holding my breath, as it has been postponed t...
The 55th annual Wrong Days in Wright took place last weekend with a somewhat scaled back list of events. The events were not as well attended as in the past, but at least folks got a chance to get together in a safe and socially distanced way. Friday night’s fireworks concluded just as the storm’s fireworks began. There was a lot of thunder and lightning, then the rain came down in torrents for a few minutes, along with some pretty strong winds. I had an emergency bag packed just in case I had...
The 55th annual Wrong Days in Wright will be taking place this weekend, Friday through Sunday, July 17-19, in Wright with a somewhat scaled back list of events. Wrong Days will start out with the annual steak fry 4-7 p.m. Friday in the Big Top Pavilion, O-G-N-I-B (bingo spelled backward) at 7:30 p.m. in the Big Top, and fireworks at dusk with free popcorn at the Cook Shack. WD buttons are available at area businesses and events, as there will be no door-to-door selling or king and queen...
On the Fourth of July, my son Curtis, friend Shirley Goodin and I went to the “compound” at Sherriff Lake (land owned by Sharon Lake’s kids Robin and Eric) to help celebrate Sharon’s graduation from the University of Minnesota Duluth. We held a graduation ceremony complete with commencement speech and presentation of awards and diploma, because UMD did not have a ceremony this year due to COVID-19. Sharon was surprised, as it was kept a secret, almost. I gave the commencement speech and got her...
The 55th annual Wrong Days in Wright is a go, and will be taking place the weekend of July 17-19 in Wright with a scaled-back list of events. There are posters up around the area, so you can check on the events you would like to participate in. Remember to attend at your own risk, and that masks and social distancing are encouraged. Buttons are available in area businesses, as there will be no door-to-door selling or king and queen candidates this year. They are still only $1 each, but there...
This has been an interesting and emotional week for our family. I had to take my husband, Bob, to St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth on Tuesday, June 9 because he was very tired and just couldn’t get words out to communicate with us. I thought it might have been a mild stroke, so off we went in a hurry. When we arrived, I went right to the emergency door, and nurses in PPE came to the van and hurried him off to the ER. I was not able to go in, so waited in my van in the hospital parking lot for a c...
