As I sit down to type this week's news, it's a balmy 40 degrees in Wright. Just think, one year ago, it was 30 to 40 below zero with a wind chill of minus 50 degrees. It was on Jan. 30, the coldest day of 2019, that our local restaurant, Minetties, caught fire and burned to the ground. What a difference a year makes. We are still hoping a café can open in Wright in the future. Congratulations to Julie Peterson, a board member at Moose Lake schools the past 29 years, for receiving the Board...

Homecoming week is here at the school. The coronation will be tonight after the boys basketball game. This year’s candidates are: Shaily, Micah, Taya, Taye, Anja, Cameron, Josie, Ben, Emmalee, Garrett, Amber, and Gage. Good luck to them all. The Farmer’s Co-op Store in Wright is now at a point where the manager had to take money out of savings to cover some expenses. Sales have gone down. The only thing that makes sense at this time is to shorten store hours at least for the winter months. So,...

Pro stock racer Jason Line announced that this will be his last season on the National Hot Rod Association circuit. He has had a very successful racing career starting at age 15. He has won championships in 2006, 2011 and 2016 and has 50 pro stock wins over his career. We wish him all the best this coming year, as he will be staying with Ken Black Racing. Jason said “we’ve got a great family there. My position is just going to change a little bit, that’s all. My heart was always in drag racin...

Our sympathy to the family of Allan William Karki Sr., 79, of Cromwell who passed away Jan. 9 with his children by his side. Upon Al’s request there will be a private family burial in West Branch Cemetery in Kalevala Township in the spring. Allan was the principal during the years that I taught in Wright (1968-1993) and we had many good times over the years. Our faculty was like a family and we enjoyed getting together with him from time to time during retirement. He was always encouraging and h...

The current Minnesota Conservation Volunteer Magazine has a 10-page article complete with photographs of our own Julie Collman and her husband, Bob Baker, as they snowmobile, and snowshoe for Big Brook Trout in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Author Michael Dvorak did an excellent job of writing the article and I’m sure he was thrilled to be spending time with Julie and Bob doing what they love doing: fishing. Pine Knot News outdoors writer Bret Baker also wrote about the couple ...

Happy New Year to all my readers and friends. It had been a long time since I was home, but finally on Dec. 26, after 11 days, I got home from my total right knee replacement at Cloquet’s Community Memorial Hospital. I couldn’t have been happier with the nurses, staff and all the folks who made my stay as comfortable as possible. If it weren’t for the pains in my abdomen, which the doctors can’t seem to find the cause of, I would be well on the way to mending. Now it’s on to therapy and more...

This may be my last news column for a couple of weeks, as I had a total knee replacement scheduled for Dec. 16 at Cloquet Memorial Hospital. I do hope to be well enough to get back home to my computer to do the news, but who knows? Our sympathies to the family of Philip Lippo, 78, of Cromwell, who passed away in his home Friday, Dec. 13, 2019 with family at his side. A memorial service was scheduled for Dec. 19. Phil’s obituary appears in today’s edition of the Pine Knot News. Our sym...

Many area folks attended the memorial service for Harold Maki last week. Missing was his oldest brother Franklin Maki, but I got an email from his niece Mary Soyring, who said that he and his wife Ellen were both ill and couldn’t make it to the funeral. That was too bad. They live in assisted living in Forest Lake. I heard a lot of people at the funeral say Franklin was their teacher – fun. He was a great English teacher. He was also the teacher who suggested sending home a bulletin of sch...

Larry Hamren was laid to rest Sunday, Nov. 17 at the Wright Public Cemetery following a wonderful funeral service with scripture, tributes and songs. Larry left Wright on Oct. 14 to visit his brother Glen and his family in Indiana, with a promise to return to his duties at Bethlehem Church on Nov. 17. Well, he kept his word and was in church for the last time on the 17th. Many of his classmates, friends, and family were there to pay their final respects. Pastor Deb Hanson-Carlson and three...

As I sat down to type this week’s news I noticed that the date is a numerical palindrome, 9-1-19, meaning it can be read forward or backward and it’s the same number. There will be 10 more like it this month. They are: 9-10-19, 9-11-19, 9-12-19, 9-13-19, 9-14-19, 9-15-19, 9-16-19, 9-17-19, 9-18-19 and 9-19-19. The next one won’t be until 2-2-22. There are only 38 palindrome numbers in this century and we get to observe 11 of them this month. The End-of-the-Summer Party this weekend at the Cromw...

  • How the little red schoolhouse came to the fair

    Jennie K. Hanson|Aug 30, 2019

The Little Red School House at the Carlton County Fairgrounds represents a typical one-room, multiple-grade school common in rural areas years ago. Many of your grandparents and great-grandparents may have attended a school such as this one. Townships often had many of these buildings. Little by little these schools were consolidated into larger school districts, and the old buildings became town halls, churches, residences or were torn down. One- and two-room schools housed grades 1-8. They...

With just days until school starts, the summer is almost over. But let’s hope there are many more great fall days to come before we have to deal with cold weather. I was able to attend the Aug. 21 Cromwell council meeting, at which MnDOT project manager Josie Olson explained why the Highway 210 and Highway 73 project is being delayed until 2021: the City of Cromwell did not approve the roundabout, so it will now take longer to revise the project plans, the project is expected to take longer t...
