This may be my last news column for a couple of weeks, as I had a total knee replacement scheduled for Dec. 16 at Cloquet Memorial Hospital. Many area folks attended the memorial service for Harold Maki last week. Missing was his oldest brother Franklin Maki, but I got an email from his niece Mary Soyring, who said that he and his wife Ellen were both ill and couldn’t make it to the funeral. That was too bad. They live in assisted living in Forest Lake. I heard a lot of people at the funeral say Franklin was their teacher – fun. He was a great English teacher. He was also the teacher who suggested sending home a bulletin of sch...

Well, he kept his word and was in church for the last time on the 17th. Many of his classmates, friends, and family were there to pay their final respects. Pastor Deb Hanson-Carlson and three...

As I sat down to type this week’s news I noticed that the date is a numerical palindrome, 9-1-19, meaning it can be read forward or backward and it’s the same number. There will be 10 more like it this month. They are: 9-10-19, 9-11-19, 9-12-19, 9-13-19, 9-14-19, 9-15-19, 9-16-19, 9-17-19, 9-18-19 and 9-19-19. The next one won’t be until 2-2-22. There are only 38 palindrome numbers in this century and we get to observe 11 of them this month. The End-of-the-Summer Party this weekend at the Cromw...
The Little Red School House at the Carlton County Fairgrounds represents a typical one-room, multiple-grade school common in rural areas years ago. Many of your grandparents and great-grandparents may have attended a school such as this one. Townships often had many of these buildings. Little by little these schools were consolidated into larger school districts, and the old buildings became town halls, churches, residences or were torn down. One- and two-room schools housed grades 1-8. They...
With just days until school starts, the summer is almost over. But let’s hope there are many more great fall days to come before we have to deal with cold weather. I was able to attend the Aug. 21 Cromwell council meeting, at which MnDOT project manager Josie Olson explained why the Highway 210 and Highway 73 project is being delayed until 2021: the City of Cromwell did not approve the roundabout, so it will now take longer to revise the project plans, the project is expected to take longer t...

He loves the opportunity to meet new (mostly elderly) people and enjoys helping them in more ways than just the driving. He g...
Not only did Wright native Jason Line earn the No. 1 spot at the NHRA Lucas Oil Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway’s qualifier, he came through and won the Pro Stock race, for his 49th career victory. It was his second career win at Brainerd, after his 2014 event win in Indianapolis after a rain delay. In an Aug. 14 Duluth News Tribune story, Geoff Gorvin of Brainerd International Raceway pointed out that 2 percent of Tamarack, Wright and Cromwell’s population of 420 will comprise 15...

The 13th annual Karl Kalli memorial golf tournament was held Aug. 2 at the Cloquet Country Club. Karl graduated from Cromwell High School in 1959 and his family has honored his memory by holding this tournament. The proceeds go to the Cromwell-Wright sports programs. There was a great gathering of former employees of the Diamond Match Company for a potluck picnic at the public park in Esko on Aug. 4. It was so much fun seeing all the folks who came and renewed their friendships. They decided to...
