Not only did Wright native Jason Line earn the No. 1 spot at the NHRA Lucas Oil Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway’s qualifier, he came through and won the Pro Stock race, for his 49th career victory. It was his second career win at Brainerd, after his 2014 event win in Indianapolis after a rain delay. In an Aug. 14 Duluth News Tribune story, Geoff Gorvin of Brainerd International Raceway pointed out that 2 percent of Tamarack, Wright and Cromwell’s population of 420 will comprise 15...

There was a great gathering of former employees of the Diamond Match Company for a potluck picnic at the public park in Esko on Aug. 4. The 54th annual Wrong Days in Wright is now just a memory and, WOW, was it a success! I guess with all the activities to choose from, it will continue to grow. It was great to see so many folks come back to our community from all over the country, and the fireworks were just great too. Plan on coming to the 55th annual Wrong Days events July 17-19, 2020. We congratulate this year's Wrong Days in Wright queen, Sophia Nelson, daughter of Danielle Richards and granddaughter of Cindye Richards and...

Last week we spent a lot of time with our son, as he took a week off before starting a new job. On Monday we took a North Shore Scenic Railroad trip up the North Shore past Congdon Park and back. We also enjoyed a cruise on the Vista Star, which took us around the Duluth Harbor. The excursion lasted an hour and 45 minutes and, as it was on a Tuesday, the cost was only $5. Yes, they have $5 Tuesdays, and it is a great experience for those who have never been or haven’t been on the lake for y...
It seems that summer is really flying by again this year. There are just so many activities to take part in and only so many weekends to get them in. But with this in mind I am asking, no, begging, for volunteers to help out at the Little Red School House at the Carlton County Fair Aug. 15-18 in Barnum. The Carlton County Retired Educators have volunteered for many years at the Little Red School House and need more help this year, as many members have died, and many others can no longer help....
Give a “welcome home” to fire chief Lucas Goodin, who is back after teaching the last two weeks in Iowa and Michigan. He says it’s an absolute privilege getting to speak all over the country, providing valuable medical education to our rural providers. But it will be nice spending the next week with family before wrapping up a month in North Dakota. We thank Lucas for all the community services he has provided the past years in our area too! We are so fortunate to have so many first respo...
There is a new minister for the Bethlehem and Bethany Lutheran parish: Pastor Debra L. Hanson-Carlson will begin her ministry July 1, with her first worship service on July 7. Our sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Gloria Mae Bertelsen Kelley, 73, of Tamarack, who died June 9 at her home. A memorial service was held June 16 at Be...
Well, school is out again for another year! It seems that the older we get the faster the years go by. We can be so proud of our area youth as they graduate from high school and go on to further education, the military or employment. Also, congratulations to our area college graduates. If you have any graduates to congratulate, please let me know so I can include them in this column. Congratulations to Jenifer Nieman Johnson for getting her master’s degree in educational leadership recently. She...

It seems that this column is made up of mostly area announcements, but that’s just the way it is. There are just so many things going on in our area and many folks have taken the time to thank me for putting these activities in the column so they don’t miss out on the ones they enjoy taking part in. You would think that there isn’t much to do in a small town, but you would be wrong. Because we are a small-town area, members of our community seem to keep busy helping each other and parti...

Summer must be on its way! How do I know? Well, the first Wrong Days in Wright meeting was held at Kalli’s in Wright on Monday, April 22. It is always on the third Saturday of July, a...
Greetings to all our area folks who attended worship services and/or gathered together with their family and friends over the Easter weekend. It seems a very special time for so many, and the thought of summer to come is always a welcome idea. I did receive some sad news, though. Dennis Lowry messaged me that his sister, Kathleen Lowry, 80, was found dead in her home in Johnson City, Tenn. Kathleen was a member of the Cromwell Class of 1956. There are no details on services at this time. Last...
Hundreds of folks made the journey to the Curling Club at the DECC in Duluth for a gathering of family, friends, colleagues and classmates to honor the memory of Shirley Ann Parviainen Eichenwald Maki on April 13. Shirley, 74, died April 10 at home, after a long illness. She lived in several cities, but mostly made Duluth and the College of St. Scholastica her main stomping grounds. Shirley was an extraordinary mother who was always available to support her children and grandchildren. Now, they...
It’s good to be back in Minnesota and my home, after traveling to Washington, D.C. with my son and grandson. We had a wonderful time visiting the many memorials and monuments, and especially the cherry blossoms which were at their peak, but it’s always great to get back home. Congratulations to Sara and Dustin Rahja on the birth of their son, Riley Leonard, on April 5, 2019. Proud grandparents are Carrie and Wayne Lind, and Pam and Bob Rahja. Also, congratulations to Vance Anderson on his rec...
As I type this week’s news, I am in a hotel in Alexandra, Va. I have been on a 10-day trip to Washington, D.C. with my son and grandson. We have seen most of the important monuments and memorials and are on our way home tomorrow. We were able to spend a lot of quality time together sharing the experiences of D.C. First, we stopped at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, Penn., then on to our motel for the night in Bedford, Pa. We stopped at Gettysburg for a wonderful tour of the m...
Hello, readers! I guess the results of the state boys basketball tournament appearance didn’t go as hoped for, but our team, the coaches, the students and fans represented Cromwell-Wright in spectacular fashion. We couldn’t be more proud of you and it sure was a great ride for this group of guys. The goal of one more was reached, so what more can you say? As many of you know, when Minetties burned down, I also lost my complete collection of Wrong Days Buttons. It is sad to realize they are gon...
Our area communities were shocked and saddened to hear of the death of Darrel L. Johnson, 78, of Tamarack, on March 12, 2019 at his home. We offer our sympathy to his wife Katy, and especially to Marty and Linde as they say their final farewells to their loved one. Darrel’s funeral was held Monday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Cromwell. Congratulations to our boys basketball team on winning Section 5A. They played in the quarterfinals of the state tournament on Thursday (after this was w...
Congratulations to our boys and girls basketball teams on great seasons. Leo Dahlberg celebrated his 85th birthday at the Villa Vista March 10 with family and friends. He thanks everyone for the cards and well wishes. Some of you may have known Barry LeVesseur from Hutchinson, Minn. He died Feb. 13. He will be missed by his wife Marjory; children Muriel and Mike; several grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Barry spent many years in the Wright-Tamarack area during hunting season and Marjory...
Why is that we spend most of our lives wishing we could stay in bed longer during our working life, and now that we are retired and can sleep late, we can’t? I hear so many retired folks saying they wish they could sleep longer in the mornings, but with the habit of rising early for so many years, the body clock just wants to get up and get going at the same time when we are retired. Oh, and speaking of early risers, this coming Sunday we turn our clocks ahead so will lose another hour of s...
The U.S. Postal Service depends on you to meet postal requirements regarding delivery and collection of mail to curbside boxes. With all the snow we have had lately, Marsha Peterson has asked me to ask rural route mailbox owners to please try to make it easier for her (and any other rural route mail deliverers) to get up to the mailboxes. She suggests that you clear at least a 30-foot arc of snow so the approach and exit can be made without her having to exit her car and putting the mail into...
