I’m not really into NASCAR that much but I do follow Denny Hamlin in his FedEx race car, and this weekend he won the Daytona 500. I follow him because he drives the FedEx car and our family and friends play the “FedEx game” whenever we are out on the highways. It all started more than 10 years ago when I was spending a lot of time helping a friend interview for jobs and, as the miles and miles got pretty boring after a time, we started spotting FedEx trucks and giving each other points for e...
The local performance of the One Act Play “Check, Please” has been rescheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium at the high school. They will be accepting free-will donations. In other school news, this year’s Cromwell-Wright School homecoming candidates are Madisyn Anderson, Amanda Hakamaki, Elizabeth Risacher, Lauren Slama, Zayde Smith, Payton Suhonen, Cameron Cahoon, Jaden Gronner, Kannon Korpela, Andrew Libbon, Marcus Pocernich and Isaac Shelton. First-grade crown beare...
This week I’d like to stray from the usual news that I write about and dedicate this article to Minetties Roadside Diner in Wright, which burned down last week. About 25 firefighters from four area fire departments responded to the blaze. We are so fortunate in our area to have so many brave and capable firefighters. Owner Minette Juhl said they are rebuilding as soon as they can. In the meantime, customers who relied on breakfast at the diner will be able to visit her other business in T...
I remember last winter our grandson-in-law took a pan of boiling hot water outside and threw it up into the air to see what would happen. Our granddaughter even recorded it with her cell phone, posted it on YouTube, and it was just beautiful. Almost looked like a mushroom cloud with hundreds of icicles falling from its center and edges. But the trick is to use boiling water, because cold water just won’t work for some reason, I guess it’s the intense heat mixing with the intense cold that really...
Did you stay up late on Monday to observe the eclipse of the Super Blood Wolf Moon? As I looked out our porch door at 11 p.m. or so, it was overhead a bit to the southeast. We were so fortunate to have a clear sky for this very special celestial event. I'm sure my brother John will be posting some great photos on Facebook. I tried to take some, but my camera just doesn't do justice to the sighting. Did you know that there was a primary election Tuesday, Jan. 22 in Senate District 11? We didn't...
Our water is back! We were out for six days, but thanks to my husband and son, it was restored and is working better than ever. It seems that there was a crack in the water pump for years, and now with the new pump we have water, and the water pressure is really great too! The pump must have frozen when the power was off for several hours last week and caused the problem. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a public holiday. It is a day off for most of us, and schools and most businesses are closed....
The new year has brought a severe water problem at our home. First of all, the power went out for several hours in the cold weather on Jan. 2, so I think our waterlines and/or the pump froze. As I write this, we have been without water for several days in the house. I’m hoping that by the time you read this, it is fixed, but we have had to be pretty creative in how we use the bathroom, wash dishes, or clean ourselves up, etc. It sure helps that we have a lot of snow on the ground, as it came i...
As I sit down to type this week’s news, it’s the last day of 2018. As the years go by, they just go faster and faster — at least that is how it is for me. There may be others who dread the days, as they just seem to drag on and on, but if you keep yourself busy with meaningful activities, time will pass and it will all seem good. First off, I want to wish my good friend Lindsay Lally a very happy birthday today, Dec. 31. She has been a dear friend for so many years that it’s hard to think o...
By the time you read this in the newspaper, it will almost be the new year, so Bob and I wish you a Happy New Year! I would also like to thank the newspapers that publish this column and have done so for many years. I started in October 1982 writing the Beseman News when Tillie Solomon was no longer able to do it. I then added the Wright News for Helen Benson and Eleanor Spicer, and finally for Kathleen Entner after she stopped writing the Cromwell News for Eva Alberg. So this column has...
With Christmas just a few days away as I write this, it is a good time to stop and think of others and how they are doing during the holidays. I usually don’t get around to sending a lot of Christmas cards, but do try to keep in touch with friends all during the year via e-mail or regular mail. I am still one of those old-fashioned people who write letters and love to receive them, too. Ray Lally says Dec. 21 is his favorite day of the year. Why, you may ask? Well, after Dec. 21 our minutes of d...
Well, here it is, only 11 days until Christmas — so, do you have everything done for this big event? I’m hoping most of you are almost ready, and some of you may even have been ready for weeks now; but as for me, that’s not happening, at least not yet. Oh, I do have our Christmas tree up and lit, but that’s only because I never took it down last year. Seems much easier to just unplug it from the end of January till the first of December, than it is to take it down and put it away. I used to do t...
The earthquake that hit Anchorage, Alaska affected Brandon Burns' family. Luckily, no one was hurt, but there was quite a bit of damage to their home. Brandon was thankful he wasn't in the air flying, as no planes were allowed to land and his wife and daughter would have been left to fend for themselves. It seems like a miracle that no one was killed in this latest earthquake. Alaskans have worked hard in the past years to make as many areas earthquake-proof or at least limit the damage....
Remember back in the day when we would hear radio or TV announcements that there were only 15 or 20 shopping days left till Christmas? Back then, there were all those Christmas catalogs that would come in the mail and the kids would pore over the toy sections until the pages were ripped or almost worn out. I think it was more fun dreaming of all the gifts we wanted as kids than actually getting them for Christmas. One year my parents were pretty poor and there wasn’t much money for gifts so m...
The whole Cromwell-Wright community came together to support our football team at the U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis on Thursday, Nov. 15. Those who couldn’t or didn’t attend the game had their ears tuned to the radio for the play-by-play of the game. It was unfortunate that Spring Grove was able to score three or four touchdowns in the first quarter, but from then on our team really played their hearts out and stayed pretty even for the rest of the game, even scoring twice. Coach Gronner and...
It was a shock to hear that Harold Haapoja, 74, passed away suddenly on Nov. 4 after a workout at a fitness center in Cloquet. His funeral was held at Nelson Funeral Care in Cloquet Saturday, Nov. 10. Harold was involved in so many musical groups and his family and friends will sorely miss him. He is survived by his brothers Wayne and Bill and their families. Sing on Harold, wherever you are! Ivona Risacher passed away recently, but I don’t have any details. Bryce Pinnow has been busy making a...
What a big weekend: The Red Bird craft sale was a big success, and I’m sure there were some successful hunters too. So many folks attend this craft sale, and there sure are a lot of talented crafters in our area. For those who were hunting, this annual event is so enjoyed by those that hunt and go out to their deer shacks for a few days or the whole season. I have never been a hunter, but do hunt with my camera from time to time. Are you missing your morning coffee at the cafe in Cromwell? Well,...
The 2019 Carlton County Senior and Caregiver Guides are now available at the Volunteer Services building in Carlton. I also have a lot of them and will be putting them in area businesses and handing them out to the senior clubs. These guides are full of much-needed information on issues for our area senior citizens. Our sympathy to the family and friends of Patricia “Pat” A. Peterson, 83, of Cromwell, who died Oct. 19, 2018 in Cardinal Court, Cromwell. Services were held Oct. 25 in Atkins-Northl...
