This past March, the Cromwell-Wright senior high choir had the privilege of embarking on a trip to honor veterans, a trip they’d been planning since October of last year. The endeavor included a trip to the Sacred Heart recording studio in Duluth on Saturday to record original songs honoring veterans, a tour at the state capitol, where they sang those songs in the rotunda and others on the capitol steps, and a plan to sing at an event honoring Vietnam War veterans in Forest Lake on Sunday. It w...
Our sympathies to the family of Judith (Anderson) Miller, who passed away peacefully on March 30, 2024, in Cromwell. She was 104 years old. Judy was well-known for her mastery of the organ and piano. Music was an important part of her life. She became the organist for First Lutheran Church in Meadowlands at age 14 in 1934, and continued playing for 74 years. A celebration of Judy’s life will be held at a later date at First Lutheran, where she was a lifetime member. Atkins Northland Funeral H...
I am back from a trip to San Jose, California to visit Curtis and Steven, and my sister’s niece and family. My sister Margaret, and her daughter Tamilee and her husband Craig, and I were there March 14-25. We were a bit concerned about flying back from the San Francisco airport, but all went on schedule. The ride back to Margaret’s went OK since there wasn’t much snow on the roads until we got to the Moose Lake area. From that point, because we know how to drive in Minnesota in the winte...

Don’t you hate it when you put something in a safe place, so you don’t lose it … then you forget where that place is? Well, I solved that problem. I leave a note in the original place, telling me where the new place is. It works every time. Congratulations to Jo and Len Schnieder, who were crowned queen and king at the Villa Vista Valentines dance. Two weeks ago, the Lakeside Quilters of Tamarack gave Quilts of Valor to three area veterans, Doug Suhonen, Steve Risacher and Tim Bury. The full...
This year’s Cromwell-Wright homecoming royalty are Johnathon Schiller and Aurora Gervais, whose dad, Tom, was homecoming king in 1998. (There’s a photo on Page 2 of this issue.) Many of the kings and queens are the sons or daughters of former kings and queens over the 77 years this event has been held. I have a complete list if you are interested. Reuben Wenstrom’s Celebration of Life will be held noon to 3 p.m. Feb. 24 at Rich Cuisine in Floodwood, with a time of sharing and lunch. Yoga meets...

I got to know him when we served on the Carlton County Public Health and Human Services advisory committee a few years ago. He was such a friendly and...
The ballots are in the mail for the Minnesota presidential primary. They came in the mail in Beseman Township and probably several others. The Minnesota primary is on March 5, 2024, so the ballots need to arrive before that date; and, remember, you must vote Democratic, Republican, or the Legal Marijuana Now party, so you can’t split your vote. There is an updated story in the Duluth News Tribune about the highway Gordon Bushnell tried to make and promote north of Tamarack and Wright. It was i...

Hey, it's the start of another year. We have almost made it into the first quarter of this century. I have so much to be thankful for. It's great to be with family and friends and especially enjoying our mild weather. I've been busy since Curtis and Steven got here on Dec. 22. We did all the Christmas stuff with family and friends, went out for a few meals, a Pine Knot party, and I had my latest infusion. All my bloodwork came back great. I've gotten so many great Christmas cards and letters....
Here it is, almost the last week of the year. It’s been an interesting year for me, especially since I have undergone treatment for breast cancer starting in April 2023. I never felt devastated when I got the news initially and still don’t feel like it’s real. Just another health issue that I have had to deal with. So far, the treatments have gone well, and all I have left now are Keytruda infusions once every three weeks and watching my blood clotting numbers weekly. I have had wonderful docto...

The weather has been so nice that my son mowed the lawn today. The grass had gotten long, and it sure looks much better now. I don’t think we have ever mowed the lawn this late in November. A few days ago I couldn’t find my cell phone and I knew it was on silent, so even if I tried to call it from the landline, I knew I wouldn’t find it. So I called my son in California and asked him where it was. He has an app on his phone for finding where I am and was able to tell me the phone was in the k...
The Area Clothing Depot is 30 years old this month. It started in 1992 at the old creamery building in Cromwell. State Sen. Becky Lourey came and donated many items and helped with sorting. Pat Andarko of Bruno came, and a television news crew also came. The Depot moved to the upper level of the old Wright School in 1993. In the summer of 2007, the Depot moved to the lower levels of the old Wright School. It moved to its current location in Cromwell in 2009. The current (and longtime) manager...

Alas, there was snow on the ground before Halloween this year. We sure have had a great fall and the color has been spectacular. As most of you know, I am dealing with Stage 1 triple-negative breast cancer. I’m done with chemotherapy, have gotten the mastectomy, and am now getting radiation treatments. I thought I would be finished with the treatments on Oct. 25, but my doctors said because of the type of cancer I have, I need 33 treatments instead of the 20 I thought I’d have. It’s kind of a disappointment, but I will do what the doctors tell me to do. The Carlton County Historical Society announced that the 2024 barn...
