Recently, I spent four hours going through and organizing all the Cromwell-Wright yearbooks (formerly known as “The Cromwellian”) I have collected over the years. To my surprise, I have four file boxes of duplicate yearbooks. Since I do have every one of the yearbooks starting with the 1925 issue, I am wondering if there is anyone reading this who would like to have any of these duplicates? I don’t have duplicates of every year, but I may have the one(s) you may want. It was fun getting them...

Well, here it is — August. So far, our summer has gone well, as we haven’t had all the terrible weather disasters other parts of the country are experiencing. We are blessed to live in this area and can only hope for better times in the disaster areas. It’s also great to see so many of the hayfields all cut and baled up. Our field was done between the rains with no rain on it at all. Great timing, Dave! There will be an open house celebration for Ray and Alice Gurske, Sheldon and the late Mario...

We have had a piano in our living room for years now. The only time it is used is to hold lots of photos and things on the top and the keyboard cover. I never learned to play the piano and neither did my kids, even if I had them take lessons. So, now we would like to get it out of the house, but you probably know what that means. Who wants it, and how to move it? Piano sales have been decreasing for decades. In 1900, when our American population was around 76 million, 171,000 pianos were sold....

Well, Wrong Days in Wright is over for another year. There were a lot of activities, but some had to go by the wayside. For instance, due to Minnesota gambling regulations, Wrong Days can no longer sell gun raffle tickets or give cash prizes for button sales. If you purchased raffle tickets and want your money back, please bring the tickets to Kalli’s Place for a refund. Otherwise, the money from the raffle will go into the general fund. As far as the buttons go, they are mostly just a s...

Congratulations to the Anderson Family of Swede Lake on being recognized as a Century Farm in March 2022 by the Minnesota State Fair and the Minnesota Farm Bureau. The farm was purchased in 1918 by Finnish immigrants Charles and Wilhelmena Anderson and has been passed down for four generations. The current owners are Guy and LeeAnn Anderson. They hope one of their grandchildren or great-grandchildren will keep on farming in some way or another far into the future. I live on County Road 23, aka...

Last Monday around 10:30 a.m., I noticed my birdfeeders were moved and knocked to the ground. A few minutes later, I noticed they had moved again. I couldn’t figure out what was happening until I looked out around 11 a.m. and saw a beautiful cinnamon-colored black bear eating out of the feeders. It even tore one apart while I was watching. The bear hung around for about a half-hour, enough time for me to get some great photographs from my sliding glass door in the kitchen. Then in the evening w...

Welcome, summer — it arrived Tuesday, June 21, with the longest day of daylight in the Northern Hemisphere. I had heard you can balance an egg on its narrow end on the first day of summer due to the rotation and revolution of the earth. We’ve tried it and managed to balance several eggs on June 21 in the past. And now that summer is here, it’s heat, heat, heat, and a mosquito invasion. What next? Oh, yeah, a bear got my bird feeders, too. Bill and Judy Haapoja will be singing at the Villa Vista...

Have you ever seen coins lying on a headstone? Leaving a coin lets the deceased soldier's family know that somebody stopped by to pay their respects. If you leave a penny, it means you visited. A nickel means you and the deceased soldier trained at boot camp together. If you served with the soldier, you leave a dime. A quarter is very significant because it means that you were there when that soldier was killed. This tradition became popular in the United States during the Vietnam War as a way,...

It must be spring, because I just picked off my first wood tick on Sunday. And I have good news: My husband, Bob, will be coming home this week after spending 52 days in the hospital and then in rehabilitation in Duluth. Ironically, we will celebrate our 52nd wedding anniversary on May 30. It surely will be good to have him back home again. He thanks everyone for your cards of encouragement. Our sincere sympathies to the family of Marion Patricia (Isaacks) Larsen, who passed away peacefully May...

As I sit down to write this week’s news, it’s snowing — again. When will this winter weather end? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. And now, as of Monday morning, I see we must have gotten over 6 inches of the white stuff. Our sincere sympathy to the family of Lincoln Hansen, who passed away at the Villa Vista in Cromwell. Funeral arrangements are pending. More than 30 members of the Young Old Timers met for the annual Easter dinner and get-together on April 12 at the Cromwell Pavilio...

I’m sure most of you have heard the old saying, “Be careful what you wish for, you may get it!” Well, for the past many months folks have been complaining that the news media spend almost all their time reporting on Covid-19 and its effects on the country and the world. They were tired of it and wondered if there wasn’t something else to report on. Well, now they got their wish and most of the news is covering a war with Russia and Ukraine. Now, all we can do is pray for an end to this and a spe...

I’m just sitting here typing this week’s news column, and since I have a really bad cold and sore throat, I am self-isolating at the Hanson Palace on the edge of Wright, and doing only “Light Duty,” just like Queen Elizabeth is, after testing positive for Covid. Speaking of royalty, congratulations to Al Elmer and JoAnne Powell on being voted king and queen at this year’s 2022 Valentine’s Day party on Feb. 12 at the Villa Vista/Cardinal Court in Cromwell. I forgot to mention that this year’s homecoming queen was the 75th in school history and the king was the 65th. Homecoming began in 1948 with the crowning of Jean Heikkila. The first king was Dennis Korpela in 1958. Congrats to Zevvus Smith and Natalee Hakamaki for keeping this fine tradition going. There is a complete list of all the homecoming royalty on the trophy case by the school office. The school reports that there is an increasing amount of reported and confirmed Covid, influenza, and o...
