The Cloquet boys cross country team dazzled Tuesday at the Lake Superior Conference championships at Grand View golf course in Duluth. The Lumberjack boys varsity team took home the trophy, winning the meet with 40 points. Ninth-grader Evan Rothamel led the Cloquet boys team, winning the 5-kilometer race with a time of 18 minutes, 27 seconds. In the three-lap course, Rothamel took the lead in the first lap. He built on his lead with each lap and finished 21 seconds ahead of second-place... Full story

  • On your pets: Covid in pets has become a thing

    Jennifer Shepherd|Jan 22, 2021

In March I wrote a column about Covid and our pets. We have learned a lot about Covid-19 in the past nine months and some of the guidance has since changed. Here is what we know now. Over the past few months, some domestic animals, including dogs, cats, ferrets, and mink have tested positive for Covid-19. There have also been reports of lions and tigers in zoos becoming sick with Covid. However, despite millions of people testing positive for Covid and becoming ill, very few pets have tested positive and developed respiratory signs. As of... Full story

  • Vet Talk: More to worry about: Tick season

    Jennifer Shepherd|Apr 24, 2020

The snow has melted, the grass is turning green, and the weather is warming up. This can only mean one thing: It's tick season. Ticks can be out at any time of year, but they have surges in the spring and fall. Although ticks can infest any mammal, dogs seem to be at a higher risk. This may be due to a combination of reasons. Dogs run through the bushes and grass where ticks are found, their fur makes it harder to see the ticks, and they are not the fastidious groomers that cats are. Cats can...

  • So far, pets are out of danger

    Jennifer Shepherd|Mar 20, 2020

It has been a life-changing week in northern Minnesota. Less than a month ago, COVID-19 was thought to be a disease in countries on the other side of the world. We were warned, but didn’t really believe, that it would make its way to the United States. Suddenly it’s here and our lives have changed dramatically overnight — schools and restaurants are closed, events are canceled, and everyone is urged to keep a 6-foot social distance from each other. Many are wondering what this means for their four-legged companions. At this time, we don’t...

  • Guest commentary: It's a run and so much more

    Jennifer Shepherd|Jul 12, 2019

An avid runner, I have participated in a lot of 5K runs over the years. The Cloquet Sawdust 5K may be one of the hardest ones I have ever done, but it’s also one of the best. With its killer hills and hot humid conditions that always come on the Fourth of July, the Sawdust is the race that runners love to hate. What is it about the Sawdust that brings more than 400 people to the starting line at 8 a.m. on a holiday? What is it that made me turn down an invitation to an out-of-town barbeque w...

  • Wolf Ridge trip teaches countless lessons

    Jennifer Shepherd, Guest Columnist|Dec 7, 2018

Every fall, Cloquet Middle School fifth- graders are out selling calendars for their field trip to Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center near Finland, Minn. My son is a fifth-grader this year and when I heard they needed chaperones, I volunteered. The trip took place Nov. 19-21. On a cold Monday morning, approximately 170 fifth-graders and 35 chaperones and teachers piled into three coach buses and headed north. Upon arriving two hours later, I quickly learned that chaperoning a trip to Wolf Ridge was not a vacation! Our total time from...
