When parents get divorced, Minnesota has a law that presumes each parent should have at least 25 percent of the parenting time with their children. That means that the custodial parent — meaning the parent with whom the child actually lives — will have 75 percent of the parenting time. Most people assume that it’s the mother who will have that 75 percent of the parenting time. And, when I first started practicing family law, that was true. The mother was typically granted “sole physical custody...
After screening more than a dozen applicants, the Governor’s Commission on Judicial Selection has recommended he choose one of three candidates for Carlton County Judge to replace Judge Leslie Beiers, who asked that her seat be moved to Duluth upon Judge Mark Munger’s retirement in January. The three candidates are Kevin Cornwell, Terri Port Wright, and Rebekka Stumme. Although all three are very familiar faces in the Carlton County Courthouse, only Port Wright has an office in Carlton Cou...
I was sitting in my office the other day when the phone rang. A person I had never met before wanted to hire me. When I asked this person how they happened to call me, they said, “My friend said you’re the best divorce lawyer around.” Now, I am not necessarily the best divorce lawyer around, but I do flatter myself as pretty good at what I do. I suspect other divorce lawyers in town, like Dennis Korman or Jeff Westermann or Gail Nouska get called “the best” as well, maybe even more frequentl...
Let’s go see a professional hockey game tonight. Easy — the Minnesota Wilderness play right here in Carlton County at the Northwoods Credit Union Arena. Let’s go see a Hollywood blockbuster movie. Easy — Premiere Theatres 6 offers at least six selections every day. Let’s go out for dinner tonight. That’s a little tougher … but only because there are so many choices. Mexican? One of the best Mexican restaurants in Minnesota is on Cloquet Avenue, and we have more than just one great pizza joint i...
Cable access may change dramatically starting Jan. 1, as the city of Cloquet cuts the cable coordinator position from full-time to half-time. CAT-7 has been on our local cable TV system since the 1970s. It’s the only TV channel dedicated exclusively to Cloquet and the surrounding area. And while fewer people subscribe to cable TV than before, CAT-7 programs are still watched by many local residents. CAT-7 is operated by the city of Cloquet but is funded by cable subscription fees and receives n...
There’s an old joke about a tourist asking for directions in Times Square: “How do I get to Broadway?” she asked a native. “Luck,” replied the out-of-work actor. “Hard work,” chimed in his working buddy. This fall, my wife and I took our daughter Eleanor to New York City for a long weekend. Small-town boy that I am, I was a little scared of the Big Apple, but excited too. My cousin offered her apartment in Manhattan, in the same neighborhood where Seinfeld “lived” and just blocks away from...
Because of the way we set up judicial districts, Sixth District Judge Mark Munger's retirement means we are getting a new judge in Carlton County, since current judge Leslie Beiers wants to move her chambers to the Duluth courthouse. It's a big deal, getting a new judge. While the governor appoints judges to replace those who retire midterm, and judges are re-elected every four years, Minnesota judges have an "understanding" that has kept politics out of the district courts. We should all be gra...
