The signs of spring abound: the sun is shining longer; the snow is melting; people are out and about; summer is on its way. Another sure sign of spring is a winter’s worth of debris, litter, and road sand revealing itself as the snow recedes. Spring cleaning can’t be too far away. We encourage those of us who spend time in the city parks and public spaces to do their part to tidy up and get ready for warmer weather. In Cloquet, city crews will start cleaning the parks and sweeping the roads, as early as next week, maybe, according to eng...
Our country is going through a trial that may redefine who we are as a nation. I feel our democracy is struggling by the hands of those who want to change our Constitutional freedoms founded and guided under God. World War II and Hitler’s Nazi antisemitism allowed many to turn their heads when certain groups were targeted, faith banned, employment denied, books burned, and the list goes on and on. Martin Niemoller, a German theologian and Lutheran pastor, reminds us of how quickly we can have these removed from those in power. His poem: “First...

Rich Winkler had a question for the Carlton County Historical Society about a possible ghost town along the original Lake Superior & Mississippi Rail Road line that ran along the St. Louis River in the county. But blank stares is what he gets since there is little to go on concerning what might have been the existence of a place called Milford. We sent Winkler a clipping we found from a January 1871 issue of the Superior Times related to the region's first rail line, up and running by 1870....
For its 20th anniversary, One Book Northland committee has selected "The Nickel Boys" by Colson Whitehead as the 2021 One Book Northland title. The committee selection was influenced by the cancellation of the 2020 events for that year's selected title, "Just Mercy" by Bryan Stevenson, due to the pandemic. The topic of racial injustice presented in this nonfiction work still needs to be made available for community discussion, and so a coordinating fiction work was carefully researched and...
