Whoa there, Facebook commenters. While we are gratified that last week’s Pine Knot story on the county board meeting got huge traffic on Facebook, we are disturbed that all but one of the comments (as of Wednesday) seem to indicate that the people writing them didn’t read the story. That’s unfortunate. Our story focused on a warning from Carlton County auditor Kyle Holmes that the estimated market value of properties is going up by at least 30 percent for 2023. That means if your home was worth $150,000 last year, it will be worth close to $1...
With the price of energy rising rapidly, I started getting a little sentimental over the energy crisis many of us remember from the late 1970s. I was in about the eighth grade when my father, struggling to make ends meet in his tavern along the North Shore, had a woodburning stove installed in our basement. Times had been tough: not only was my father inexperienced at running a tavern, the economy was in rough shape in Lake County. The railroad and the taconite plant were laying off workers, and tourism had crawled to a standstill as the...
On a recent visit to the Dollar Tree store, I discovered that it is no longer the Dollar Tree; it is now the $1.25 Tree. Most items, not all, but most, are now $1.25. That’s a 25-percent price hike. And I thought inflation was already high at 6 and 7 percent. I wonder if the name of the store will change. A local food store advertises on TV that they have low prices; not any more. We’ve all seen food prices lately and they are not low. I wonder if this might be classified as “false advertising.” Maybe the statement in the commercial needs a...
As I watched the State of the Union address, I was not shocked but I was dismayed by the behavior of U.S. Rep. Lauren Bobert of Colorado and U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green of Georgia when they heckled the president of the United States. Being a student of Harry Truman for over 50 years, I asked myself, “What would Harry do?” One can never be certain what a president would do in any given situation, but a student of Truman, who has come to understand the motivations, the values, the demeanor of the man can make a considered approximation of his...
Gene Otto Pelletier, 77, of Esko passed away Feb. 12, 2022. Gene was born May 30, 1944, in Proctor, and was a 1966 Proctor graduate. Gene spent more than 40 years at the Duluth News Tribune in advertising sales, and served as a mentor to community newspaper ad reps in his later years with the Duluth newspaper. After retiring, he became a certified PCA and spent the last four years helping to care for his grandson and "co-pilot" JJ. Gene was devoted to his family, hosting game nights and...
Heavy snowfall across parts of Minnesota prompted many anglers to haul their fish houses off the ice in late February. People who haven’t yet removed their shelters should keep in mind that the removal clock is ticking. The fish house removal deadline for inland waters in the southern two-thirds of the state came Tuesday. In the northern one-third of the state—north of the east-west line formed by U.S. Highway 10, east along Highway 34 to Minnesota Highway 200, east along Highway 200 to U.S. Highway 2, and east along Highway 2 to the Min...
University of Wisconsin-Superior thrower Gage Stankiewicz, a 2021 graduate of Esko, is headed for the 2022 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships in the shot put, the NCAA announced Sunday. Stankiewicz will compete in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, with the preliminary round beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday. Stankiewicz, a prolific high school star, is ranked 12th in NCAA Division III in the shot put after bettering his personal record at the NCAA Final Qualifier on Saturday, where...
What a difference a night makes. After the Minnesota Wilderness beat the Springfield Jr. Blues 4-3 Friday night, eight players scored for Springfield Saturday in a 9-3 pummeling of the Wilderness. Friday was good for the Cloquet team. Four players scored for the Wilderness that night, with rookie Jared Mangan leading the way, adding two assists for three points. The South Carolina native opened the scoring at 9:43 of the first period with his second goal of the season. He then helped set up Ethan Wolthers on a power play goal with 5:38 that...

There seems to have been a time, perhaps in a galaxy far, far away, when we in the United States felt rather comfortable. A time when conflict and major events of history seemed to be something you only read about in history books. How quickly things can change. Let alone a political divide that no one alive today has ever seen so strident, the now two-year Covid-19 pandemic will leave an imprint that generations after us will be digesting. The same can be said of the social unrest sparked by the continued extrajudicial killing of Black...
When the 2020 Census showed an increase of 444 residents in Cloquet, city officials took a look at their own version of redistricting and decided to keep things the way they were. City administrator Tim Peterson explained to the council members during Tuesday’s meeting that unlike U.S. House District 8 — which is expanding west to include the White Earth and Red Lake nations — Cloquet saw only small changes to the population numbers in the city’s five council wards. Current population numbers and percentage of average population are listed...
Prosecutors have charged a man with Cloquet connections with second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of Minneapolis North student-athlete Deshaun Hill Jr. The 15-year-old died Feb. 10 after being shot in the head the previous day along a Minneapolis street. Hennepin County prosecutors allege 29-year-old Cody Logan Fohrenkam fired the shot that killed Hill after the two may have bumped into each other on a sidewalk. Over the course of the investigation, numerous witnesses and a surveillance video from the area helped investigators identify Fo...

The Minit Mart convenience stores in Carlton County were expected to come under new ownership by the end of the month. There are seven Minit Mart stores in the county that will fall under KornerStores Inc. of Duluth, Caywood Country Store in Saginaw or Edwards Oil Company Inc., a family-run business in Virginia, Minnesota. Most of the current Minit Mart stores were, until 2015, under the ownership of Cloquet-based Best Oil Co. It sold 18 Little Store convenience stores to TravelCenters of...
Residents have until 8 a.m. Monday, March 7, to comment on plans for remediation of contaminated groundwater in Esko, adjacent to the Esko Post Office. A notice regarding the comment period appeared on page 5 of the Feb. 4 Pine Knot News. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency began site investigation in 1994, when the post office well was sampled as part of a petroleum release investigation and benzene was detected in the well. Remedial activities lowered the benzene levels so the MPCA closed that case in 2008. In 1996, tetrachloroethene (PCE)...

If you or a family member or friend have not been adversely affected by Covid, consider yourself very lucky. My worst nightmare as a mom and grandmother was that one of my kids or grandkids would become very sick from Covid. Well, that nightmare came true recently. Our youngest grandchild, at 6 months old, became extremely ill as a result of Covid. Luckily, her mom was aware of her difficulty in breathing and brought her to a pediatrician who wanted our grandchild to go immediately to the emergency room at Children’s Hospital in St. Paul. After...

School board members for the Carlton and Wrenshall school districts voted on Monday to move ahead with adding softball as a cooperative spring sport. If approved by the Minnesota State High School League, the partnership would begin immediately and be effective for at least this season. Both schools have lagging participation rates that would have put junior high students on varsity rosters, often before they are ready, the application to the MSHSL said. The two districts earlier this year agreed to combine track programs as well. The...
The Minnesota Wilderness split a home-and-home series with St. Cloud last weekend. The team’s 8-0 drubbing of the Norsemen at home on Saturday will be the last time they’ll be on home ice for a while. The Wilderness embark on a nine-game road swing beginning with three games this weekend, one at the Minnesota Magicians in Richfield on March 3, and two at Springfield in Illinois on March 4-5. They’ll follow that with six games in Alaska, three at Anchorage and then three at Kenai River. They’ll return home for a series against Janesville on Marc...
