A jury trial is underway at the Carlton County Courthouse for a Scanlon man accused of criminal sexual conduct “with heinous elements” and kidnapping. Dennis Michael St. John Jr., 55, was arrested in July 2020, after being accused of holding a woman against her will and raping her repeatedly, forcing drugs on her and threatening to kill her. Applications for 2022-2023 funding from United Way of Carlton County are available through the United Way of Carlton County (UWCC) website, www.unitedwaycarltoncounty.org. Funding is available for all eligible nonprofits working in Carlton County. Applications will be accepted until Feb. 11. Final funding decisions will be made in Spring 2022. Since the end of last year, Carlton County has recorded 246 new Covid-19 cases and two deaths. The cumulative numbers since the start of the pandemic as of Wednesday are 6,361 cases and 82 deaths, according to the Minnesota Department of Health. As of Jan. 6, the positive test rate here was 4.8 percent. Mary Vnuk, 83, of Palm Harbor, Florida and Cloquet passed away Oct. 3, 2021 in Palm Harbor. She was born in Cloquet to Ira and Jessie Sell on Dec. 11, 1937. David Tushar, a former Carlton County priest who was placed on leave in July 2019 due to allegations of sexual abuse of a minor over 40 years ago, died Dec. 23 in Las Vegas. Tushar had served as a priest in the Diocese of Duluth since 1985, serving in Carlton, Sawyer and Cloquet at various times during the last 16 years of his career.
