  • Our View: Resolve to take care in the cold

    Pine Knot News|Dec 31, 2021

With New Year’s Eve and severe cold colliding in northern Minnesota this weekend, we encourage an abundance of care and caution. Temperatures this weekend will be 15 to 20 degrees below zero at night, with windchill at 35 below zero. If you bring someone to their home — perhaps someone who has had too much to drink — please either walk them to the door or stay there long enough to make sure they make it safely inside. For those who don’t remember, there is a former University of Minnesota Duluth student who doesn’t have any fingers or toes b...

With the more highly transmissible Omicron variant now the dominant Covid-19 strain across the state and much of the country and world, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released new quarantine guidelines Monday. According to a media statement, the CDC is shortening the recommended time for isolation from 10 days for people with COVID-19 to 5 days, if asymptomatic, followed by 5 days of wearing a mask when around others. The change is motivated by science demonstrating that the majority of transmission occurs early in the course...

  • Wright/Cromwell news

    Pine Knot News|Dec 31, 2021

I was encouraged to see so many folks attending Christmas Eve services in our area churches. It seems that we sometimes forget the reason for the season, but when folks come together to worship together it renews our faith in humankind. Now we can look forward to the new year and hopefully better times. So, have a merry and blessed 2022. It seems that we are getting more and more scam calls now. Lately, scammers pretending to be pastors are sending emails and texts, saying they need a favor from you in the form of gift cards. Please don’t fall...

  • Dispose of trees smartly

    Pine Knot News|Dec 31, 2021

Decorating the house is a much-loved activity during the holidays. “But we don’t want to let those lovely greens bring trouble to our landscape,” says Lori Seele from the Duluth Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area. “Various pests that are not native to our region can hitch a ride on Christmas trees, wreaths, boughs, vines, and plants with colorful fruits and seeds.” According to the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, the disease dangers include elongate hemlock scale, boxwood blight, Oriental bittersweet, gypsy moth, brown marmorate...

  • history mystery solved!

    Pine Knot News|Dec 24, 2021

An alert reader sent us his discovery after seeing this photo printed in the Dec. 3 issue of the Pine Knot News. Sean Sundquist said he recognized it as a shot of what was known as the Outlaw Bridge over the Pigeon River in far northeastern Minnesota, a forerunner to the U.S.-Canada connection on Highway 61 near Grand Portage. A wooden bridge was erected by Rotary members from the area in 1917 in a rather remote area northwest and inland from the current highway along Lake Superior. A hotel...

They held a birthday concert for the longtime organist in honor of her 90th birthday. He also talked about Marge, and their working relationship....

  • Former Pedro's building debated

    Pine Knot News|Dec 24, 2021

After repeated attempts to contact the owners of the building that formerly housed first Mexico Lindo, then Pedro's Mexican restaurant, Cloquet City councilors voted Tuesday to declare the historic downtown Cloquet building "a vacant and hazardous substandard building." Community development director Holly Hansen said the hope is to acquire (via condemnation) the building at 915 Cloquet Avenue and then try to find a developer who would revitalize the building. A public hearing is set for Feb....

  • Our View: Past is prologue in this season

    Pine Knot News|Dec 24, 2021

We can’t say it any better, so, for Christmas, we again share with you the prose poem, “Desiderata,” written by Max Ehrmann in 1927. The title itself means things that are desired or wanted, in this case, desired qualities of the soul and of the heart. Desiderata Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story...

  • Letter to the editor: Carlton board didn't support anything

    Pine Knot News|Dec 24, 2021

The Carlton school board vote taken Monday, Dec. 20, on the proposed grade 9-12 tuition agreement with Cloquet did not result in a vote of support for the school and community — as it appears at face value — but rather a vote to dissolve the district. An entity cannot repeatedly operate with a deficit budget and continue to function longterm, whether that entity is a business, nonprofit, household, or, in this instance, a school district. It appears the school board has kicked the proverbial can down the road again; although this can is not...

  • Letter to the editor: Thanks for story on relative, plaque

    Pine Knot News|Dec 24, 2021

My family and I would like to thank John Prouty, Jim Meikle, and the Pine Knot staff for their part in looking up information on our uncle Sig. It occurs to me that Sig may have been suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, which was not recognized at the time. He was in Italy, and I have read stories of infantrymen in Italy having to follow tanks up the mountain, where the tank treads chopped up the bodies of American and German soldiers who had died on the trail. I know Sig would have been horrified to see something like that. Ken...

  • Letter to the editor: Take the fluff out of infrastructure bill

    Pine Knot News|Dec 24, 2021

Regarding the Dec. 10 Harry’s Gang column by Pete Radosevich about U.S. Rep. Pete Stauber and his vote against the infrastructure bill last month: Maybe, just maybe, Pete Stauber wanted a vote of true infrastructure (roads, bridges). What percentage of all these Build Back Better measures go to honest, hard infrastructure. I challenge Pete (as part-owner of the paper and publisher) to publish what is in the bill or at least the top 20 or 25 items. Fix our roads and bridges but leave all the junk out. Tony Sheda, Wrenshall...
