High school students with interests in STEM fields, but who are uncertain of what to expect in college, now have a friend they can turn to for insights 24 hours a day. She’s Professor Alworth, who chats with northern Minnesota STEM students in a series of fun and informative video features that launched this month at www.AlworthScholarship.org/STEMtalks.html. The talks, each about 10 minutes long and featuring recent Alworth Scholarship recipients, confirm that many STEM students had the same apprehensions current high school students might hav...
One month ago, at 5 p.m. Oct. 19, it was 70 degrees outside in Cloquet. Just about perfect outdoor weather. Our region was very fortunate to have an elongated golf season in 2021 — just ask golfers! Even with severe drought conditions this summer, Carlton County courses persevered and, in many cases, thrived. “Our club had over 200 days of golf this year and over 21,000 rounds played,” said Bill Manahan, Cloquet Country Club pro/manager, adding that the course was open April 10 to Oct. 27 this year. “By comparison, we had 18,000 rounds last ye...

Another Veterans Day has come and gone. We hope you were able to meet up with one on Thursday. If patterns continue, it will likely be much more difficult to find a veteran in our midst in the future. That’s what we’ve found in looking at statistics, mostly from the U.S. Census, about population trends. The following is a short explanation from the Census on what is happening to our veteran population. We follow that up with some of the numbers we’ve collected. “The number of veterans in the United States has been declining for decades...
The Perch Lake Township Board of Supervisors joins with township residents to express our total disappointment in the lack of proper planning by the Carlton County Engineer’s Office in not providing a proper pathway along Big Lake Road. Residents of Perch Lake depended on such a pathway in the past. It offered an alternative to motorized vehicles for recreation and work-related activities. The limited pathway resulting from the Big Lake Road project is simply unsuitable for bikers and walkers as it is too narrow, causing safety concerns. In t...
According to Merriam-Webster, a coach is “one who instructs players in the fundamentals of a sport and directs team strategy.” There is so much missing from that definition. In late July, Otto Berti asked me if I’d help coach the Superior JV boys soccer team and assist varsity. I took the leap. Not just me, but my family let me be gone weeknights and Saturdays. It was a lot, but the reward was great. One of the things we talked about was the difference between a team and a family. Team does not equal family. Family loves unconditionally witho...

Photographer Mike Farmer said this is the second eight-point buck he'd seen in his yard in as many days. "They seem to have a one-track mind this time of year," Farmer said. We think the buck is just happy Farmer was shooting with his camera, not a rifle. Reports from last weekend's deer hunting opener were sparse, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources reported. It was just too hot for the deer or hunters to be moving much. That could change this weekend....
According to Carlton County Sheriff Kelly Lake, there will be no charges against the business owners who released 200-300 “spent” chickens into the woods near their farm in Twin Lakes Township because they were no longer laying enough eggs. A deputy talked to Promised Land Farm owners Rob and Lori Gamble. By that time the chickens had all been rounded up by volunteers, including Kyleen Pedersen, the person who reached out on social media to various local chicken groups. “We use our discretion sometimes. The chickens were safe and gone,...
