    The Minnesota Wilderness went 5 for 5 on the power play Saturday night, in a 6-3 victory over the Janesville Jets in a North American Hockey League battle at Northwoods Credit Union Arena in Cloquet. William Persson picked up two of the team’s goals with the man advantage, both of them scored in the third period. Persson’s first goal broke a 3-3 tie with 14:47 remaining in the final frame.     As Minnesota rushes into postseason football, two Carlton County teams look like contenders to make a state run. Esko in Class AAA and Moose Lake/Willow River in Class AA both have gone undefeated this season and are favorites in sectional play. In Section 7AAA, the Eskomos finished the season 8-0 and allowed a total of only 34 points in those eight wins.     Douglas John Plante, 59, of Cloquet, with care and grace, ended his battle with cancer on Oct. 16, 2021. Doug was born on Sept. 27,1962, in Dayton, Ohio to Kenneth and Sharon (Thompson) Plante. Doug was known as a friendly, humorous, generous, considerate, loyal and kind person. He developed into a man whom many generations of Cloquet residents came to know and appreciate.   • Covid cases still on the rise

    Numbers of cases and deaths continue to rise in Carlton County with 23 cases on Oct. 18 and a seven-day average of 20. Overall, the county continues at a heightened infection rate, but case numbers fluctuate daily. On Oct. 8, 40 new cases were reported. On Oct. 13 there were 16 new cases. To this point, 4,403 county residents have had Covid-19 and there have been 66 deaths documented since the beginning of the pandemic.... Full story

  • Driver dead after semi crash

    A semi-truck driver was pronounced dead at the scene after his truck rolled into a ditch on Highway 210 just after 5 a.m. Friday, Oct. 15. According to the Minnesota State Patrol report, 49-year-old Dallas Clinton McCloud of Baudette, Minnesota, was driving an International semi eastbound on Highway 210 near Corona Road when the truck rolled into the ditch.     St. Luke’s and Gateway Clinic are partnering on a multi-million dollar project that will bring more healthcare resources to people who live in the Moose Lake area. She graduated from Cloquet High School and the University of Wisconsin–Stout, majoring in home economics. She married Gordon M. Carlson on June 26, 1954.     Nearly half a million firearms deer hunters are preparing for the firearms deer season, which opens Nov. 6. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources wildlife managers report favorable weather so far this year, and good opportunities to harvest deer in most areas. Of note this year is the DNR warning that hunters know the boundaries of the deer permit areas and any chronic wasting disease regulations that apply where they hunt.     A former Barnum girls basketball coach pleaded guilty Friday to having sex with a player. Andrew Palmer, 34, pleaded guilty to one count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct. Two other third-degree counts will be dismissed as part of the plea deal.
