Marie Carlson, 82, of Cloquet passed away surrounded by her family on Monday, May 31, 2021. She was born Feb. 2, 1939, in DeWitt, Illinois, the daughter of Carl Dean and Isabelle (Monaghan) Callison. Marie married Raymond B. Carlson on Dec. 26, 1959, and the couple went on to have five children. She was a workaholic, working at numerous places and wearing many hats. The National Hockey League started its Stanley Cup Playoffs May 16, and the University of Minnesota Duluth men’s hockey program has had seven alumni take part, according to a UMD hockey posting Tuesday. Jodie White's piano students presented a recital May 23 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Cloquet. The Carlton County Transportation Department will be spraying herbicides on vegetation growing through the pavement of the St. Louis River bike/pedestrian trail from Minnesota Highway 210 east of the Four Seasons Sports Complex in Carlton north to the Park and Ride lot in Scanlon. A 7-year-old boy died in an ATV crash Friday, May 21 in southern Carlton County. According to a Carlton County press release, Drew Nordstrom was a backseat passenger in a side-by-side ATV that rolled over and on top of him. Minnesota motorists are known for their high seat-belt compliance rate, but a disturbing development is taking place on Minnesota roads. Between Jan. 1 and April 22, preliminary reports show 31 unbelted motorists died this year, the highest number of year-to-date unbelted traffic fatalities since 2012. This loss of life comes after a deadly 2020 when 112 unbelted motorists died on Minnesota roads compared to 73 in 2019. Victor Moretto, 86, died at home May 16, 2021, from bone cancer. He was born May 13, 1935, at home, the youngest of 10 children, in Dewey, Wisconsin. He worked at U.S. Steel in Duluth for many years and later drove a school bus in Carlton. In 1957, he married Shirley "Sam" (Blume) Moretto. Edward "Ed" Donald Thornton, 95, passed away peacefully at Diamond Willow Assisted Living in Proctor on May 17, 2021. Ed was born in St. Paul, the second eldest of seven children to Ada and Edward L. Thornton. Ed joined the U.S. Navy in 1943 when he was 17 and served in the South Pacific Theater as a signalman third class during World War II.
