There are at least two community cleanups scheduled for Saturday, April 24. In Cloquet, The Boldt Company and the city will host an Earth Day cleanup starting at the Dunlap Island Park shelter, where participants are asked to gather and register between 9:30 and 10 a.m. The cleanup will go...

After a one-year hiatus due to the pandemic, students from Cloquet, Esko and Carlton high schools are holding another “Nerf war” — so don’t be surprised to see kids chasing each other with brightly colored Nerf guns in the name of fun and fortune. Although not unique to northern Carlton County, this rite of spring is a big deal. Each spring, some 200 kids or so form teams, pay their entry fees, dig out their Nerf guns and prepare for battle. While it makes many adults uncomfortable in a world where public shootings happen far too often with rea...

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second-best time is May 21. That's when the grand Pine Knot News "tree giveaway" is launching, a day when local businesses and organizations will be giving away a grand total of 10,000 pine seedlings to anyone who promises to give them a good home. Sponsored by the Pine Knot News and Sappi, it's a way of giving back. It's a celebration of Sappi's multiple awards for being one of the most sustainable paper mills in the world, and of the Pine...
Growing up in an inner-ring Minneapolis suburb, we didn't think much of bees. We saw few, perhaps because my dad, along with other neighbors, zapped the dandelions every spring with an awful-smelling liquid he targeted from a tank. Years later, as we walked back along the Cloquet River after a highwater spring canoe trip, I asked him why nothing was growing along the roadway. "Sprayed with DDT," he answered, and went on to tell me about Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring." Bees sting. They were our...
Like the weather this spring, the first softball game of the season for Cloquet and Esko was all over the place. Initially, Esko took a 9-2 lead after two innings and looked to be cruising to an easy win. But the Lumberjacks had other ideas and rallied with four runs in the third, two in the fourth, three in the fifth and two more in the sixth inning, as they went from seven runs down to leading 13-10 after the Eskomos managed only one run in four innings. "Our girls came out swinging and...

This week’s History Mystery is … where did the weekly History Mystery feature go? Nowhere. We’re still here. We have a few mysteries up our sleeve and have been waiting for the Carlton County Historical Society to open to the public once again. We’ve heard that some limited opportunities may be available soon. We continue to work on the Cloquet etymology question. We are also wondering what readers can tell us about the origins of other names in the county: mainly Carlton (which we have some information on) and Scanlon, which remains a bit of...
The Minnesota Department of Transportation announced more than 200 construction projects for the 2021 construction season. Northeastern Minnesota will have little disruption to traffic flows save for the behemoth project on Interstate 35 in Duluth that has already restricted traffic to one lane in each direction just west of downtown. Here's a rundown of MnDOT- led projects in Carlton County and region known as District 1: • The significant work on the Twin Ports Interchange, known by its n...
Participants from Carlton County are included in a warning about an outbreak of Covid-19 cases associated with a Minnesota youth wrestling tournament held in South Dakota in late March and early April. The Minnesota Department of Health and Minnesota Department of Education have alerted schools around the state to watch for potential cases and to double down on masking, social distancing and other prevention measures. Health officials are also asking anyone who attended the tournament to get tested immediately for Covid-19 and to watch for...
Although live performances of “Almost, Maine” by the County Seat Theater sold out this week, patrons can still buy tickets for virtual performances through April 18 at www.countyseattheater.com under the “tickets” section on the website. “Almost, Maine” is a romantic comedy about a place that’s “so far north, it’s almost not in the United States. It’s almost in Canada. And it’s not quite a town, because its residents never got around to getting organized. So it almost doesn’t exist.” The play shares nine short “magical moments” with au...
A lawsuit accusing the Minnesota Department of Corrections of not fulfilling its obligations to protect prisoners in Moose Lake from the Covid-19 pandemic was dismissed in July 2020 by a Sixth District judge. That decision was upheld earlier this week by the Minnesota Court of Appeals. Initially filed on behalf of three inmates by the American Civil Liberties Union of Minnesota against the Department of Corrections in April 2020, the petition asked for the release of the three prisoners and others in a similar situation to a safe location...
CAT-7 has been a part of local cable television since the late 1970s. In recent years, the channel became stagnant and irrelevant, serving little purpose except to broadcast some City of Cloquet meetings and a few half-hearted public service announcements. Operating a TV channel became a burden to the city, rather than a benefit to its residents. So, the city contracted out the operations to an entity that knows how to gather and present local news and information: this newspaper, the Pine Knot News. After several months of assembling...
Since the first Moose Run in 2000 on the first Saturday in May, it has become the unofficial kickoff event for the busy summer season in Moose Lake. The registration fee is $20, and each participant will receive a $20 gift card from their choice of a participating business. Pay $20; get $20. It’s virtually free. Gift cards will be mailed out during the week of May 10 and can be used through the e...

Amatuer photographer John Dahlman shared a few signs of spring with the Pine Knot News this week. The photos of the swans, and the male and female mallard ducks, were taken while driving his local country roads. The pussy willows grow on Dahlman's property in the Floodwood area. Dahlman said he uses a point-and-shoot camera (Nikon P900) to take his photos, and he loves the 83x zoom because he often has to shoot from the hip when trying to capture whitetail deer and other fast-moving wildlife. It...
After going without a bishop since late 2019, Pope Francis named a Wisconsin priest to lead the Duluth Diocese. Rev. Daniel Felton, of the Diocese of Green Bay, Wis., will become the 10th bishop of the Diocese of Duluth, which serves the 10 counties of northeastern Minnesota with more than 44,000 Catholics and 71 parishes. His episcopal ordination and installation as bishop of Duluth have been set for May 20. Felton, 66, has served as vicar general and moderator of the curia for the Diocese of...
Recent changes to the Affordable Care Act made through the American Rescue Plan mean more Minnesotans will be able to access tax credits through MNsure. The changes lower premiums for most people who are currently enrolled through MNsure and expand access to tax credits to many Minnesotans who previously made too much money to qualify for financial help. Minnesotans who are not currently enrolled in a plan through MNsure, including those who are uninsured, have until July 16 to enroll in coverage. Plans selected in April will have an effective...
The Cloquet public schools will be ending the in-town winter bus route after Friday, April 16. The school district asks families to plan accordingly if their student has been making use of the winter bus option....
A teenager from the Fond du Lac Reservation accused of fatally shooting his friend in December has a new attorney, who intends to contest both the original second degree manslaughter charge along with a third-degree murder charge added in February. Joseph James Fohrenkam, 18, is accused of unintentionally shooting his friend, 16-year-old Joseph James Peterson, during a night of drinking. According to the criminal complaint, Fohrenkam was drinking with four other young men in a pickup truck, which was parked outside a home on the 3600 block of...
