Cloquet hockey great Corey Millen has seen it all - from the time he laced up his first pair of skates to his current position as an assistant coach with the Des Moines Buccaneers of the United States Hockey League. "I am really enjoying where I am at right now," Millen said via phone last week. "Since leaving Cloquet a couple of years ago, I've had my plate pretty full." That is an understatement. While he was back home, Millen coached the Cloquet-based Minnesota Wilderness to the Robertson...
Finding wins has been a bit tough for the Cloquet boys basketball team. The 'Jacks have managed just one win in their last four outings, which includes Tuesday night's 78-69 loss to Chisago Lakes in Cloquet. In a span of 12 days, the 'Jacks lost by 17 points to Hermantown, beat Virginia by 14 points, and then dropped a 72-59 decision to Crosby-Ironton prior to Tuesday night's loss, putting the team's record at 7-9. "Hermantown is pretty good," Cloquet coach Steve Battaglia said. "Offense is...
They call it ice trolling: augering a couple hundred holes across a frozen lake. The thought is to constantly hop hole-to-hole trying to find active fish. In reality, making Swiss cheese of an icy expanse can’t replace 10 minutes of open-water trolling as far as covering productive water. However, winter angling offers one advantage over summer: in Minnesota, you can use two lines per angler, allowing the old one-two punch for winter success. For each target species the logistics are a little d...
Last weekend was a big opportunity for the Minnesota Wilderness to make a move up the standings in the Central Division of the North American Hockey League. The Cloquet-based Wilderness played host to the Brookings Blizzard: a team with just five wins in 35 games played, and a team mired in last place in the division. Instead of a sweep and a chance to solidify their third-place hold in the division, the Wilderness lost both games and now find themselves in the fourth and final playoff spot....
Hello to you all, or should I say, "Aloha." I am playing and learning in a place far, far away from Carlton County and the Pine Knot News. It took me 66 years to get here, but I made it: O'ahu, Hawaii. It is a lot warmer and a lot greener here. I have seen whales, lizards in our Airbnb and flying fish being chased by tuna. I've wiped out on a boogie board, and jumped into a jungle waterfall. My favorite thing to do was snorkeling - I saw fish that put Dr. Seuss creatures to shame; the colors...
Esko senior skier Thomas Heren captured first place Monday at the Mont du Lac Invitational. Heren, who posted the two fastest times in both heats, bested Duluth East's Bren Elleson. Heren's first run saw him post a time of 29.99, almost a second faster than Elleson. Heren went even faster on his second run, finishing in 28.94, almost two full seconds faster than Elleson. Heren's two runs, with an overall time of 59.83, was enough to take the first. Elleson finished with an overall time of 1:01.4...
