In a room full of Cloquet High School students, Elianah "Ellie" Danger doesn't look like a daredevil. Get her on a horse though, and prepare to be amazed by her riding skills as she daringly zooms around barrels or poles, almost one with her horse, Dunkin. Just shy of 15 years old, Danger currently holds the fastest time for pole bending for youth (category 1D) in Minnesota and across a five-state area. She's also racked up close to $15,000 in winnings in the past three years, in multiple catego...
Plans for building a new fire and ambulance station in Cloquet are not new. But now there is a revived sense of urgency to the idea, following a Jan. 15 vote by the Cloquet Area Fire District board on its intent to issue $18.8 million in bonds while calling for a public hearing on a new facility, to be built on 13 acres of donated land off 22nd Road across the street from Sappi. Board members and CAFD chief Jesse Buhs say the hearing on Feb. 12 is hugely important. They want the community to...
A dozen miniature horses were taken off a property in Carlton County Monday, including one missing part of a rear leg. The rescue, performed by the Minnesota Hooved Animal Rescue Foundation, came at the request of the owners in Barnum Township, who told the Carlton County Sheriff's Office that they simply could no longer take care of them. The sheriff's office had contact with the owners last week about loose animals and they "indicated to deputies that they intended to surrender the horses,"...
A federal spending freeze pursued by President Donald Trump this week sent state and local governments scrambling to understand potential ramifications. The White House later paused the order after a judge suspended the freeze on trillions of dollars moments before it was set to begin. Still, state and local sources sought to get a handle on what a funding freeze could mean if it were allowed to proceed. The state receives $1.9 billion in federal funding every month, a news release from the governor’s office said. Democratic Gov. Tim Walz p...
An effort is underway to educate and gain public feedback on the planned elk restoration project for northeastern Minnesota. "We are thrilled to announce that, with the support of the Minnesota DNR, 1854 Treaty Authority, local governments, and other conservation partners, we are on track hoping to reintroduce the first elk to the area in the next year or two," said Mike Schrage, wildlife biologist for the Fond du Lac Band, in a news release. "The return of elk will not only enrich the cultural...
A 47-year-old Cloquet woman was awaiting charges in Pine County Jail after striking multiple vehicles and leading authorities on a high-speed pursuit Tuesday that was terminated by the State Patrol and later picked up by deputies from two counties. Jennie Elizabeth Birkholz was set to be charged with fleeing a police officer on Thursday in Tenth District Court in Pine City. The charge is punishable by up to three years in jail and a $5,000 fine. It’s unclear if further charges are coming, but the criminal complaint filed with district court s...
Carlton school board met in special session Tuesday to consider options about an insurance lapse on the high school building. As of Sunday, Jan. 26, Carlton school district was without insurance on the secondary building, which houses grades 7-12 as well as several Northern Lights Academy classrooms. Because of problems with old electrical equipment, the current insurer, Employers Mutual Casualty (EMC), discontinued the coverage as of the end of the policy's term. The district is not completely...
After revising its Title IX policy less than a year ago, Cloquet school board members voted Monday to revert to the previous version of the policy as a result of U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent executive order recognizing only two sexes. Cloquet superintendent Michael Cary said the policy — which addresses discrimination on the basis of sex and led to equal funding for male and female athletic programs 52 years ago — has become a “political beachball.” “One administration says it this way...
In the old days, consuming news took a little work. People bought or subscribed to a local newspaper, and often a statewide or regional paper as well. (My folks got our hometown paper and the Louisville Courier, even though Louisville was hours away and in another state.) Then they sat down and read them. They waited for the nightly news. They turned on the radio, which often reported on local as well as national news, again, on a schedule most days. Today it’s all at your fingertips. On the p...
While compiling the story on today’s Page 11 about local student productions in the one-act competitions, I couldn’t help but let my theater nerd come out. I’ve been in some community productions in my adult life, and was actually a theater major for a minute in college. (Practicality won out.) My favorite memories are from high school, where I got a late start trodding the boards for the first time as a junior. It was so long ago. How long? Perhaps this visual will offer more on how things have changed. My director in high school belted out h...
The Cloquet boys basketball team is having a resurgent season. Led by senior Jack Battaglia, the Lumberjacks are 13-3 and hoping a strong finish will give them one of the top seeds in Section 7AAA. Recently, Battaglia was announced as one of 30 players who was placed on the Mr. Minnesota Basketball watch list. "The list will get narrowed down to 10 sometime in early March," said Steve Battaglia, the boys basketball coach for Cloquet and Jack's father. "It's a heck of an honor to make the list. T...

Northern Revival Volleyball Club made a statement this past weekend at the Big City Luau Tournament in the Twin Cities. Four Revival teams went down to compete with over 700 teams, and three of the four came home with the coveted Tiki Trophy. “These girls are making sure the volleyball community knows where the Twin Ports and Iron Range are,” said coach Rob Hering. Additionally, the 18s team took third place in the Gold bracket, dropping only one match to the team that won the tournament. Cloquet’s Ella Maslowski plays on that team, with teamm...
An overtime loss Friday resulted in the only point the Minnesota Wilderness gained in this weekend’s three-game series in Fairbanks. The Fairbanks Ice Dogs (24-7-5) won 3-2 in Thursday’s opening game, 3-2 again Friday in overtime and 5-1 in the Saturday finale. The Wilderness penalty kill was perfect over the three games, going 18-for-18. The Wilderness (17-18-4) are now winless in their last six games, and their record has fallen below 0.500 for the first time since Dec. 14. Minnesota continues its final Alaska trip of the 24-25 season nex...

The Moose Lake/Willow River boys basketball team grabbed an 18-point halftime lead as they rolled to an 82-56 road win over Carlton/Wrenshall in Wrenshall last Friday night. "In the first half we gave up 31 points and half of them were the result of not getting back on defense," said Rebels coach Paul Dewey. "Carlton/Wrenshall took advantage by getting layups and releasing players early." At the half the Rebels held a 49-31 lead against an inexperienced Raptors squad. "We had a good start to the...
A fast start to the second half allowed the Cromwell-Wright girls basketball team to pull away to a 64-51 road win over Esko on Monday night in Esko. "We locked them down at the start of the second half on defense," said Cardinals head coach Jeff Gronner. "We got off to a big run, and that was enough to get us a win against a tough team on the road." With Cromwell-Wright leading 34-30 at halftime, the Cards started the second half on an 18-4 run as Esko struggled to get the ball to drop. "The...

Around 200 folks from far and wide were in attendance to bid a fond farewell to this 112-year-old community of worshippers, including past pastors Valerie Brown and Deb-Hanson-Carlson, and Gayle Nieman, wife of the late Ed Nieman. We are so thankful for all who organized and participated in this special service. I'm hoping to send in some memories in special news...
