The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys and girls Nordic ski teams competed in the Lake Superior Conference meet last week at Snowflake Ski Center in Duluth, and left with top-three finishes. The boys finished second, only three points behind Duluth Marshall - even without star skier Aidan Ripp - and the girls team finished tied for third with Duluth Denfeld but earned third through tie-breaker scoring. The LSC meet was combined with the Duluth East Invitational, so times were included for results in...

Kerry Rodd, Pine Knot News Sports|Feb 1, 2019

Forget about glass ceilings, Lumberjack alumnus and professional women's hockey player Sadie Lundquist has reached the roof of the local hockey arena - and she's the first female to get there. The Pine Knot News did a feature story on the former CEC center in January. Last Thursday, the CEC program hung a banner with a photo of her in her Minnesota Whitecaps professional uniform from the rafters at Northwoods Credit Union Arena, where she was a star player for the Lumberjacks girls team. The...

Kerry Rodd, Pine Knot News Sports|Feb 1, 2019

The cold weather seemed to freeze a perpetual smile onto the face of Cromwell-Wright girls basketball coach Jeff Gronner on Tuesday. After picking up two wild wins last week against highly ranked Mountain Iron-Buhl and a talented Esko team, the Cards took care of host Carlton 79-43 Monday to pick up their 14th win of the season. “How can you not be happy with the way the kids have been playing and their effort,” Gronner said. “After beating state-ranked MIB and traditionally tough Esko in one we...

  • Icy proposal

Bret Baker, Pine Knot News Outdoors|Feb 1, 2019

I know exactly where I was 20 years ago, pretty darn close to the day. I was standing on the ice in front of our family cabin at Birch Lake, Grand Marais, auger in hand. Jamie was there also; she was being a good sport about braving the cold and chasing some rainbow trout. Little did she know the plump trout below our feet were not my main target. I fired up the gas auger and pushed hard into its rotating blades. I quickly punched through eight inches as the auger broke through the underside of...
