  • Cloquet has familiar new football coach

    Kerry Rodd|Feb 4, 2022

After 19 years as an assistant in the Cloquet football program, Jeff Ojanen was named the new head coach of the program at last week's school board meeting. Ojanen, a 2002 Cloquet graduate, spent five years with the ninth-grade and junior varsity teams and the last 14 years as the defensive coordinator for Tom Lenarz, the longtime head coach who retired this past fall. "I am very grateful for the opportunity to be the head coach," Ojanen said. He played high school football for Lenarz. "As long...

  • After rugged start, Bombers solve Wrens

    Kerry Rodd|Feb 4, 2022

A change in the defensive scheme helped Barnum blow open a tight game against the Wrens Monday night in Wrenshall. The Bombers went on to record an impressive 75-36 win over a good Wrenshall squad on the road. "The first half of the half, both teams were trading baskets and the score was even. Then we switched up matchups defensively and we were able to somewhat contain Corey Despot," said Barnum coach Rich Newman. "We were also able to get some transition points off turnovers and missed...

  • Rebels run past Panthers

    Kerry Rodd|Feb 4, 2022

Last Friday night's high school boys match up in Culver featured the tall-as-skyscrapers Panthers and the high-energy Rebels in a game that was tight throughout the first half. But Moose Lake/Willow River eventually hit the gas pedal to cruise to a 71-43 victory. "We played solid defense and we were tied halfway through the first half and only allowed them to head into the locker room up by seven points," said South Ridge coach Phil Pliska. "They're a high-octane team that likes to play really...

  • Local musher is busy on and off Beargrease trail

    Mike Creger|Feb 4, 2022

On paper, the 40-mile version of the John Beargrease sled dog race on Sunday looks like a real thriller. Racing times showed minutes and even seconds of differential in the top six places. But the quick race from the outskirts of Duluth to Lake County Highway 2 north of Two Harbors has a staggered start, so participants basically hung out as fellow racers came in and later found out the official times and places. Among them was Cloquet's Billie Thompson, who finished fourth among 13 racers with...

  • Beargrease Photos: Go dogs, go!

    Feb 4, 2022

A quintessential northern Minnesota event took off Sunday when teams of mushers and their sled dogs started on the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon races. The continued relatively warm weather — it was 30-some degrees along Lake Superior Monday and Tuesday — caused nearly half of the 24-team field in the 300-mile marathon to drop out. Slushy, sticky snow is hard on the joints of dogs, and mushers didn’t want to overtax them. Winning the marathon Tuesday afternoon was Ryan Anderson of Wisco...
