The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton girls hockey team got a chance to shake off the rust on Saturday as they opened the season with a 4-1 home win over Pine City. The Lumberjacks were the last team in the area to open their season after coming off a state Class A runner-up finish last season. It didn't take long for CEC to get back into a rhythm. • Lumberjacks clear Duluth forest

    Kerry Rodd|Feb 5, 2021

It was a big week for the Cloquet girls basketball team. Last Thursday the Lumberjacks dispatched Duluth East and on Tuesday they downed Denfeld, completing a sweep of the Duluth schools. "The girls played really hard," said Cloquet head coach Heather Young of the East game, adding that they focused on defense, playing full court defense and doubling on the inbounds against the Greyhounds, whom they beat 75-62. "We have been working a ton on our help defense in practice and it is beginning to... Full story

For those who disparage or simply don’t understand the younger generation, maybe this will help. Please enjoy the essays on this page and next shared by Cloquet High School seniors in Jason Richardson’s college prep English class last semester. The prompt was NPR’s “This I Believe,” Richardson said, adding that some students “put their hearts into this.” We thank them for sharing. — Pine Knot News staff ******** Beating your brain By Logan Dushkin I believe in mental toughness. • Winter lock loosens a bit

    Anne Dugan|Feb 5, 2021

For me and my neighbors, it feels far too early to think of the promise of spring. But I have appreciated the return of evening light as I walk to the mailbox at 5 p.m. While most phenological changes are happening "in the belly" of the earth, local farmers are on the verge of starting seeds for the coming season and many of our area's food share farms are now open for member sign-ups. The Dalens at Northern Harvest Farms (northernharvestfarm.com) and Catherine Conover from Stone's Throw Farm...

  • Wright/Cromwell news

    Jennie K. Hanson|Feb 5, 2021

I recently found a painting my great uncle Dave Larson did of his wife back in the 1940s, but it has an opaque coating of some kind that has made the painting difficult to enjoy to its best. So, I was wondering if anyone knows of an art restorer in the area? This painting would be a much-improved family treasure if fully restored. It looks like he put a clear coating over it and as the years went on it became cloudy. Sure seems strange not having any football games on national TV this weekend....
