  • On Your Health: Don't let cold temps lead to preventable injury

    Ken Ripp MD|Feb 7, 2020

I have to say it has been a great winter. There’s been plenty of snow and overall the temperature has been very agreeable. I am still expecting some cold blasts to come. With this mind, I thought it would be good to talk about cold-weather injuries. Excessive cold plays a role in most of the natural-weather-related deaths in the United States. There are certainly groups at higher risk. Older adults, homeless and intoxicated individuals, and outdoor enthusiasts are at higher risk out in the cold....

  • 'Jacks start playoff push, win 3-0

    Kerry Rodd|Feb 7, 2020

Entering Tuesday night's Section 7A girls hockey playoffs, the Lumberjacks were more than heavily favored. Cloquet-Esko-Carlton came in as the No. 1 seed with a gaudy record of 22-3, while their competition, the International Falls Broncos, were 0-20-1 on the season. CEC didn't disappoint the hometown fans as they pumped 72 shots on net to come away with a 3-0 win. Within the first few minutes of the opening period, it became obvious that the Broncos game plan was to pack things in tight...

  • East gets one back on 'Jacks

    Kerry Rodd|Feb 7, 2020

This is probably not what Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys hockey coach Shea Walters envisioned as the latter part of the hockey schedule winds down. After falling in tough back-to-back games against Hermantown and Holy Family Catholic last week, the Lumberjacks lost Monday night 5-0 to Duluth East at Heritage Arena in Duluth. CEC fell behind 1-0 at the 6:04 mark of the first period when Charlie Erickson scored on an assist from Ryan Cummings. It looked like the 'Jacks would get right back in the game...

  • CEC's downhill skiing season ends at section

    Jana Peterson|Feb 7, 2020

It was a rough Section 7 meet Tuesday for the members of the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton alpine team, who did not advance any kids to next week’s state competition. “Being sections, kids lay it out there on the edge and we had some crashes that put our kids out of contention,” said coach Ryan Zimny, of the races at Giants Ridge. “Emily Regas was on the bubble for a state qualifying spot after the first run but ended up blowing out of the course on her second run.” He explained that each skier get...

  • Lumberjacks standouts take stock on season

    Howie Hanson|Feb 7, 2020

Cloquet hockey players Christian Galatz and Owen Carlson took some questions before Monday night's road game at Duluth East. Both can be considered stars on a team that is looking to make a strong push toward a state tournment berth this year. Christian Galatz Q Has the Jacks' challenging regular-season schedule prepared the team for the stretch run? A Yeah, it's definitely a tough schedule. We've come ready to play and had a good mindset every day. Q The Jacks' identity? A Offensive team,...

  • Korby's Connections: Cloquet was home to broomball champions

    Steve Korby|Feb 7, 2020

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the hockey rink at Cloquet's Athletic Park on 14th Street was a hopping spot. Ice skates weren't always required. On Monday evenings from January until March, the rink was reserved for broomball. Cloquet Community Education, led by director Gary Welton, organized and conducted a men's broomball league. Teams were mostly from Cloquet but there were some from Brookston, Grand Lake and other nearby communities. The Cloquet Broomball League was unique in that...

  • Pine Knot Outdoors: Let's hope Band will give young hunters a permit break

    Bret Baker|Feb 7, 2020

The Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa has decided to charge an annual fee to access thousands of acres of reservation land for non-band members. It’s $25 a month or an annual fee of $100. I have enjoyed hunting and fishing on tribal lands the past 40 years. I can say paying no fees and taxes has been a real bargain. Have I taken over $100 annually in fish and game? Probably not. Have I collectively done $100 in damage to the land? Not to my knowledge. I’ve respected the land as if it...

  • Wrenshall News: Find the light in life in the dead of winter

    Anne Dugan|Feb 7, 2020

Minnesota climatology records show that January was the cloudiest on record since recorded observations started in 1963. With the gloomy weather it can be hard to stay motivated. Luckily, our community has some options for you. The city of Wrenshall created and maintains a free outdoor ice rink located just behind the post office and bus garage. It is lit by lights hanging in the pine trees that stay on until around 9 p.m. There is a warming house and bench for folks to put on skates and rest....

  • Wright/Cromwell news

    Jennie K. Hanson|Feb 7, 2020

As I sit down to type this week's news, it's a balmy 40 degrees in Wright. Just think, one year ago, it was 30 to 40 below zero with a wind chill of minus 50 degrees. It was on Jan. 30, the coldest day of 2019, that our local restaurant, Minetties, caught fire and burned to the ground. What a difference a year makes. We are still hoping a café can open in Wright in the future. Congratulations to Julie Peterson, a board member at Moose Lake schools the past 29 years, for receiving the Board...
