  • 'Jacks shut door on Wolverines

    Feb 10, 2023

Erin Loeb scored twice and the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton girls hockey team defeated Rock Ridge, 3-1, in Cloquet at Northwoods Credit Union Arena in Tuesday's first round of the Section 7A girls hockey tournament. It was the No. 4 seed Lumberjacks' second 3-1 win over the No. 5 Wolverines in two weeks. "The girls are trying to give me gray hair," said CEC coach Kennedy Houge. "This is pretty much how our whole season has gone, and I am so proud of how these girls have reacted." Playing with a heavy...

  • Rebels advance with shutout at home

    Kerry Rodd|Feb 10, 2023

Moose Lake Area and Hibbing/Chisholm split during the regular season in girls hockey. On Tuesday night the Rebels left little doubt they were the better team as they bounced the Bluejackets out of the Section 7A playoffs with a 4-0 win in Moose Lake. “This was a big win for our girls,” said Rebels head coach Reilly Fawcett. “They ended our season last year and this was a revenge-type game for us.” The Rebels held a slight 9-6 shot advantage in the first period, but Megan Hattenberger made sure they came out of the period leading 1-0, slamming h...

  • Ski teams fly into postseason

    Jana Peterson|Feb 10, 2023

The Lumberjacks girls alpine team missed a trip to State by one place Tuesday, taking third place at the Section 7 meet at Giants Ridge. Cloquet-Esko-Carlton head coach Ryan Zimny said one skier fell on one of two runs. Although she walked back up and completed the course, it is impossible to make up for that missed time. "The fact that we had a fall and were still third out of 19 teams, that says a lot," Zimny said. Although the team won't be competing in Biwabik next Tuesday, two individual...

  • Nordic team sends relay teams to State

    Jana Peterson|Feb 10, 2023

Over a week's time, the Lumberjacks Nordic ski team had its share of triumphs and losses, with temperature highs and lows to match. Fighting minus-5-degree temperatures at the Lake Superior Conference championship in Duluth on Thursday, Feb. 2, the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys team won the LSC conference championship. On the girls side, Charlotte Ripp and Jazlyn Gunderson made all-conference Thursday, placing fourth and 10th, respectively. CEC head coach Tim Stark said last week's conference...

  • Tussle for top spot continues

    Feb 10, 2023

A topsy-turvy three-game weekend left the Minnesota Wilderness falling up, into sole possession of first place, despite ending on a two-game losing streak. The Wilderness surrendered three-goal leads in two of the games, saw one of the team’s veterans reach a 100-point milestone, and became the first team in the Midwest Division of the North American Hockey League to surpass the 50-point plateau. At 23-13-6, the Wilderness lead the division with 52 points, followed by the Fairbanks Ice Dogs with 50. Minnesota beat Fairbanks, 5-4, on Feb. 2 a...

  • Carlton overpowers FDL's Iron 6

    Kerry Rodd|Feb 10, 2023

When the Carlton and Fond du Lac girls basketball teams hit the court on Monday, the Ogichidaa got off to a quick start and had the Bulldogs out of sorts for a moment. Ultimately, Carlton was able to right the ship and pull away to a 60-27 road win. "We got out of the gates a little slow and they came out and hit some deep 3-pointers right away," said Carlton coach Brian Hey. "They were playing with only six players, so they started to slow down a bit as the game wore on." Eventually, the...

  • Oh baby, is she fast

    Brady Slater|Feb 10, 2023

"So, Kendra Kelley, you haven't lost a race in 2023." "I have not," said Kelley, the Cloquet native and North Dakota State University sprinter who is tearing up indoor tracks across the Midwest. Kelley owns top-of-the-podium finishes in every individual final she's taken part in since the start of the indoor season Dec. 2, going a perfect six-for-six in 60- and 200-meter sprints. She also takes part in a 4x400 relay that's posting top finishes nearly every time out. "It comes down to my support...

  • My run-ins with Kevin McHale

    Steve Korby|Feb 10, 2023

Cloquet and Hibbing, both in northern Minnesota, have had spirited sports encounters over the years, with the Lumberjacks and Bluejackets enjoying memorable and classic confrontations in football, boys hockey, soccer and basketball. The communities are similarly sized, with mostly blue collar residents and energized fans. When I was a 1971 Cloquet High School senior, the football team played the Bluejackets in what was dubbed the Super Bowl. It pitted Cloquet - the seasonlong Duluth/Zenith/Big...

  • Wright/Cromwell news

    Jennie Hanson|Feb 10, 2023

Have you heard of serendipity? It’s an unplanned fortunate discovery. Well, that happened to me last Sunday. I had put a load of clothes into the washer and against my better judgment, I left it running while I went to church. I got home in a couple of hours and, you guessed it, the washer wasn’t able to discharge the water down the drain, and it ran all over the porch floor, soaking into the rugs and seeping all over. I quickly picked up the rugs and threw them outside and mopped up the floor. The next day I decided to clean the laundry room a...

A new endowment fund for Carlton County 4-H will support the launch of new programs in science, agriculture and technology, as well as trips to the Minnesota State Fair. The endowment was introduced this month with $7,000 in seed funding coming from the Minnesota Farmers Union of Carlton County, and a private donation from former county commissioner Mark Thell. The endowment will also aid youth who want to attend state and national 4-H programs. The fund with the University of Minnesota...

  • Allotment laws led to carved-up reservations

    Feb 10, 2023

It's complicated. That's the phrase that often comes to mind when delving into exactly how acres within the Fond du Lac reservation came under non-Native control, paving the way for today's Cloquet Forestry Center. It is also quite simple. A series of laws passed in the late 1800s kick-started a land rush on reservation lands across the country. They allowed "allotments" for Native residents with promises of eventual ownership of land within reservations. It was an attempt to assimilate Native...
