  • Raising the minimum wage is good for workers, families, and local economies

    Feb 15, 2019

Late last year, the Pine Knot ran an Our View editorial, “There are better ideas than $15 an hour.” As an economist, I couldn’t disagree more. On the contrary, a substantial hike would assuage many now in working poverty, encourage labor force participation, raise living conditions for many thousands in our state, and generate business income in our local communities. During the 2012-13 Minnesota legislative session, I led the research for and co-authored “Making Work Pay in Minnesota,” the final report of a bipartisan House Committee...

  • What's hiding in your yearbook?

    Pete Radosevich, Harrys Gang|Feb 15, 2019

There was an uproar last week when we discovered the governor of Virginia had an odd picture in his 1984 medical school yearbook: a caricature of a black man and a KKK member, both seemingly smiling and clueless. Nothing in the photo or its caption explains why the photo was on his page. The governor was apologetic and remorseful but refused to resign. He still has the support of many of the state’s black population, according to polls, although a significant number are upset. Understandably s...

  • Letter to the editor

    Feb 15, 2019

Let’s start a roundtable To the editor: I’d like to submit an idea. I’d like to start a weekly roundtable in our area. It seems there are so many more experts out there who would be valuable to have their input. A weekly roundtable just might make that possible. Throughout the course of history many of our iniquities have been solved once the people insisted the veil of secrecy be lifted. “Transparency” is the word I like to use, but for fun it can be said that “light eliminates evil.” It is harder to operate unethically if everyone knows what...

  • Women in leading roles isn't news ... or is it?

    Feb 15, 2019

Allete, the parent company of Minnesota Power and one of the largest companies in northern Minnesota, just named Bethany Owen as its new president, and intends to make her the chair and CEO of the company. She’s the first woman in the history of the company to hold that role. The announcement did not make a huge splash in the media, and we’re somewhat grateful: a woman taking a leading role isn’t really news anymore. In Minnesota, both U.S. Senators are women. Women have been in the the lieutenant governor’s seat since 1983. The Raiter Clinic h...

  • Carlton Winterfest … putting the BRRRR in BRAZEN

    Feb 15, 2019

While the temps hovered around a hot zero degrees, it didn’t hinder 92 brave souls coming out to try their skills at Mini Hook and Slice (think crazy mini golf in the snow) during Saturday’s Winterfest celebration in Carlton. The second year of this event did not disappoint, the businesses and organizations that sponsored holes really showed up with some fun and creative obstacles for participants! There were 10 holes, some including sumo bowling, riding a lion while using a croquet club to hit...

  • Cloquet medallion found!

    Feb 15, 2019

The fourth annual Groundhog Day Medallion Hunt in Cloquet has ended. Make Abell of Cloquet found the medallion hidden near City Hall on the morning of Feb. 12. Mike won $510 in gift cards and certificates for Cloquet businesses. The Medallion Hunt kicked off on Groundhog Day after the 6-inch circular resin medallion bearing the likeness of a groundhog and containing a penny was hidden in its top-secret location. Cloquet Community Ed & Rec coordinates the hunt. WKLK Radio partners to read the...

  • Citizens talk with city council about animal control

    Jana Peterson, Pine Knot News|Feb 15, 2019

Animal control garnered the most attention at the Feb. 6 Cloquet City Council meeting, as councilors got an update on future plans for strays and runaway animals from city administrator Aaron Reeves, then heard from citizens too. Reeves recapped a joint meeting of 11 different city, county and township officials held Jan. 29 at Cloquet City Hall. Noting that the old Friends of Animals humane society building has supposedly been sold, Reeves told councilors that estimated costs for a new animal...

  • Food pantries help people make ends meet

    Feb 15, 2019

In addition to the Salvation Army food shelf, there are at least two other nonprofit agencies that come to Cloquet each month to help people access a little more food at a significantly lower cost than they would pay in a grocery store. Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank sends its mobile food pantry to Cloquet on the third Thursday of each month. Access to this program is dependent on income level, although emergency situations also apply (as does going unpaid, in case there’s another government shutdown). Food is distributed in the p...

  • Special election ballots by the numbers

    Feb 15, 2019

Although the special election for the District 11 State Senate seat is over and Republican Jason Rarick was declared the winner on Feb. 5, mail-in ballots are still coming into the courthouse. County auditor Paul Gassert said he has received a total of 144 late mail-in ballots since election day, and those ballots won’t be opened or counted. The number of ballots coming in the mail has slowed to a trickle, he added, noting that they received only five on Tuesday. It was an improvement over the primary election on Jan. 22 which may now lead t...

  • Bruins call up Karson Kuhlman

    Feb 15, 2019

Boston Bruins general manager Don Sweeney announced Wednesday that the team was recalling former Lumberjacks and University of Minnesota Duluth hockey player Karson Kuhlman from the Providence Bruins. Kuhlman, who helped lead the Bulldogs to the NCAA championship his senior year, was signed by the Bruins in April 2018 to a two-year contract. He has 12 goals and 13 assists for 25 points with Providence this year. Kuhlman is a 2014 graduate of Esko High School....

  • Yep, there's been a lot of snow this month

    Mike Creger, Pine Knot news|Feb 15, 2019

"Extreme" would be the proper term for the 2019 side of winter so far. More than 20 inches of snow in the first two weeks of February came on the heels of a polar plunge of minus-20s temperatures at the end of January. Meteorologist William Leatham at the National Weather Service in Duluth said the total snowfall there, 26.5 inches, is a record for the first two weeks of February. The former mark was 24.6 inches in 1939. Snow totals across Carlton County vary, but mirror the official...

  • KBM Ice Fishing contest this weekend

    Feb 15, 2019

Kingdom Builders Ministries will hold its third annual ice fishing contest at Carlton’s Chub Lake Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Organizer Bruce Matuszak encouraged people to come 20-30 minutes earlier to register and get a copy of the rules. He said people should go to the only public boat landing and parking lot (by the baseball fields) on Chub Lake and look for the big tent. Cost is $20 per adult and $10 for youth ages 12 and younger. Payment by cash or check is preferred. “We’re going to let people fish the entire lake; they just have...

  • Cloquet School Board approves spring coaching contracts

    Jana Peterson, Pine Knot News|Feb 15, 2019

Cloquet school board members were presented certificates of appreciation Monday, Feb. 11, in honor of School Board Recognition week. “Thank you, I haven’t done anything yet,” said the newest board member Hawk Huard, who began his latest term in January, but had also served on the board 2004-2016. It was a quick meeting, lasting only 20 minutes. District staff gave reports on various schools and programs. It’s I LOVE TO READ month at the elementary schools, which are holding various activit...
