    Pine Knot News staff|Feb 19, 2021

It might be that early February provided the biggest punch of cold winter we'll receive this season. So the remnants of this winter will be a breeze when it comes to enjoyment without the arctic air. There are myriad ways to alleviate cabin fever in the area while still taking pandemic precautions. Here is a sampling: WALK There are many trails available in Carlton County for folks who'd like to get outside and tromp around in the snow, including trails at Jay Cooke State Park, along the St....

  • Caring&Sharing: Helpers helping helpers

    Pine Knot News|Feb 19, 2021

The Knights of Columbus puts faith into action by service and helping the poor and people in need. In December, 10 Knights councils in the region conducted a drive to raise funds for the Union Gospel Mission of Duluth, which was in desperate needs of money to serve a growing number of hungry in Duluth due to the lack of regular donations during the ongoing pandemic. Led by district deputies Paul Sever, Jeff Nelson and Bob Spehar, the order raised $7,000. A check was presented to Sue...

  • Snow pants

    Feb 19, 2021

Oh no, did someone get stuck upside down in a snowbank or is that a pair of frozen pants in the yard? At least one Cloquet home had fun with the recent cold snap, freezing a pair of jeans — and shoes to boot — outside the residence at 14th Street and Doddridge Avenue. • We share in calling this place our home

    John Hatcher|Feb 19, 2021

In June of 2020, we turned off County Road 6, just east of Barnum, and onto the gravel driveway at the Johnson family farm. It may be our new home, but it will always be the Johnson farm. We had just come from Moose Lake, where we had signed the closing papers. Ed Johnson had handed us several large sets of keys. We still aren't sure what some of those keys open. We parked, got out of the car and started to walk. Nothing needed to be said. My fiancé, Heather-Marie Bloom, and I knew where we...

  • Bombers light a fuse in second half

    Kerry Rodd|Feb 19, 2021

The Barnum Bombers parlayed a huge second-half scoring binge into an impressive 77-44 win over a feisty Carlton Bulldogs team in boys basketball Friday night. Leading by just nine points at the end of the first half, 27-16, the Bombers lit it up in the second half by scoring 50 points to secure the win. "We had a balanced scoring attack," said Barnum coach Rich Newman. Did they ever! Ten Bombers scored, with Joe Peterson leading the second-half surge with 19 points. Also scoring in the double...

  • 'Jacks are back on a winning track

    Kerry Rodd|Feb 19, 2021

After losing three of their last four games, the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys hockey team needed something good to happen Saturday night in Eveleth. Their answer was a pair of goals early in their game against Eveleth-Gilbert and a solid 4-2 road win over the Golden Bears. That was followed up by an impressive 8-1 road win over the Proctor Rails Tuesday night. Against Eveleth-Gilbert, the Lumberjacks scored just 3:24 into the first period when Brayden Tyman took a feed from Brock House, put his hea...

  • Mirage put a stop to Lumberjacks win streak

    Kerry Rodd|Feb 19, 2021

It's been a mixed bag of tricks to start the season for the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton girls hockey team. The Lumberjacks opened the season by going 4-1 through their first four games, opening with wins over Pine City, Duluth, Superior and Eveleth-Gilbert through last week. However, their fortunes changed Tuesday when they fell 5-1 to the Proctor/Hermantown Mirage - the team CEC beat in the Section 7A title game last season. On Friday against Eveleth-Gilbert, the 'Jacks started quickly, taking a 4-1...
