The Floy Gilman Scheidler Scholarship Foundation provides scholarships to residents of Carlton County who are pursuing post-high school education. The foundation was established in 1999 by Floy Dickison, former Esko high school English teacher and her sister, Ona Scheidler, a former Cloquet high school business teacher. A woman rear-ended a Cloquet school bus last week, but there were no serious injuries as a result. The crash was reported at 4:39 p.m. Feb. 11 on the 1500 block of 14th Street in Cloquet. According to Cloquet superintendent Michael Cary, the few students still on the bus were brought to the hospital for examination while parents were contacted by the bus company, he said. Initially the driver and all children denied any injuries, but Cloquet Transit later reported that one child was injured....
The Carlton school district alerted parents Feb. 13 that a student had “made a verbal threat to student safety” at the middle school/high school but the threat was deemed not viable. Former Cloquet-Esko-Carlton hockey player Karson Kuhlman is back playing with the Boston Bruins in the NHL after suffering the first injury of his hockey career back in October. Congratulations to Beth Clark on her 500th win as the head coach of the Hermantown Hawks girls basketball team on Feb. 13. Beth is originally from Cromwell, graduating in 1977. She was one of the first girls to play basketball when Title IX was instituted. She played on the varsity team in the seventh grade when Stan Verich and I were the coaches. Thanks to two goals by senior Taylor Nelson, the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton Lumberjacks are beating Warroad 2-0 after the first period in today's state semi-final game at the Xcel Energy Center in Minneapolis.
