  • For Cloquet, it's a small (hockey) world, after all

    Kerry Rodd|Feb 21, 2020

Anyone attending a Cloquet-Esko-Carlton girls hockey game this year would probably not have noticed anything unusual when they looked behind the team bench at the coaching staff. A glance would reveal a coaching staff of two women and one man. But the story of this group goes much deeper than gender. Head coach Courtney Olin appears to be no different than any other coach. Steve Korby|Feb 21, 2020

Cloquet schools have shined in academics, athletics, the fine arts, and other extracurricular events going way back to the start of the 20th century. Over that time, the school district has been an innovator, taken chances, and exposed students to not only regional leaders but nationally acclaimed figures. Two events that happened in Cloquet around 1970 — when I was a high school student — had a profound effect on me. I’m not sure of all teachers and administrators responsible for these event...

  • Floor hockey tradition continues at CHS

    Caleb Swanson|Feb 21, 2020

Cloquet is a hockey town. From PeeWees to Bantams to high school to the Wilderness. Hockey is in our community's blood. However, hockey season falls on top of the blandest, most Vitamin D-deprived time of the school year. The holidays are over, the sun sets at 5 p.m. and spring break is too far on the horizon to bring any comfort. The year was 2004. Cloquet high school football coach Tom Lenarz had a handful of football players who didn't play a winter sport. Coach Lenarz creatively roped his...
