Oh, there have been a few, but not that many. I tried to think back on who would be on the all-time list of Division I college boys basketball prospects from northeastern Minnesota. Even though the hardwood has been a favorite forum for many young local athletes, a limited number have excelled enough to tread with the college and professional basketball elite. Of course, there is Kevin McHale and John Retica from Hibbing, Terry Kunze and Greg Downing and Como Pontliana from Duluth Central, Pat...
Fresh off a series of roster moves aimed at bolstering the team for its stretch run, the Minnesota Wilderness promptly laid an egg last weekend in Eagle River, Wisconsin. The team dropped a pair of games to the Wisconsin Windigo, allowing the home team to leapfrog Minnesota atop the Midwest Division of the North American Hockey League. Minnesota (23-14-7) is tied with Fairbanks (24-17-5) at 53 points in second place in the division. Wisconsin (26-15-3) now leads with 55 points. The Wilderness failed to protect a three-goal lead Saturday,...

My outdoor Christmas decorations are still buried in the snow and ice, waiting to be rescued and put away until the next holiday season. I am hopeful for the spring that is soon to come. As the days stay light longer, I look forward to seeing the green grass, trees budding and flowers begin to bloom. On that subject, make a note: Daylight Saving Time begins March 12. Here’s a list of upcoming meetings and events i...

And this time I couldn’t blame my late husband Bob for losing it either. I was resigned to giving up, and then my granddaughter’s words came back to me again: “Don’t worry, Grandma, it will show up!” Well, on Thursday while lyi...

The snow began just outside of Madison, Wisconsin. We had been driving north for days, watching the landscape change from green to brown until the world looked like an old black and white photo. And then it was as though we entered a snowglobe. The landscape was blanketed in white. Ahead, a string of brakelights snaked around the curve. The road was encrusted in ice. There had been a crash, and the interstate was closed in both directions. We took a detour that wound through hilly Wisconsin farm...
