  • Cardinals nip Bulldogs in overtime

    Kerry Rodd|Feb 26, 2021

Two teams that were undefeated in Polar League play met up in Carlton on Friday night and it was a battle between the Carlton and Cromwell-Wright boys basketball teams. It took extra time, but eventually the visiting Cardinals were able to pull out a 56-51 overtime win. "We played well but shot poorly, which has been the story of our season lately," said Cards coach Bill Pocernich. "We shot 14 for 30 from the free throw line, 2 for 13 from the 3-point line. Despite that, I felt that we defended... Full story

  • Bombers stifle, can't stop Rebels

    Kerry Rodd|Feb 26, 2021

Going into Friday night's game against Barnum, the Moose Lake/Willow River boys basketball team was averaging almost 90 points per game. While the Bombers were able to hold the Rebels to 29 points under their season average, the Rebels still pulled away to a 20-point, 61-41 win at home. "Our shooting percentage and points per possession were actually pretty close to our season average," said Rebels coach Wes Cummins. "I think Barnum did a great job slowing the game down and limiting our... Full story

  • Nordic skiers thrive in unusual season

    Jana Peterson|Feb 26, 2021

The Nordic ski season has been anything but normal for Section 7 ski teams this year. Some of it couldn't be avoided: to start with, the season was delayed by more than a month because of a spike in Covid numbers and the resulting distance learning requirement. Once it began, meets - which usually feature at least six to eight teams - were limited to three. For the first race, skiers had to wear face masks, but fortunately officials soon came to their senses. During the cold snap, races were... Full story

  • Carlton Happenings

    Leola Rodd|Feb 26, 2021

At last, the cold has relaxed its grip and we are able to get outside. We can look forward to the first day of spring on March 20, and even further to the first day of summer on June 20. Don’t forget to move clocks forward an hour on March 14. Although the pandemic and cold weather has kept many of us home, the Carlton community, school and organizations are beginning to plan for some events. The All Night Grad Party committee is selling pasties through the Magnolia Café in Carlton. The ta... Full story

  • Wright/Cromwell news

    Feb 26, 2021

We enjoyed a beautiful funeral service for Leo Dahlberg Feb. 20 at the Atkins Northland Funeral Home in Cloquet. Leo was well-known in Wright and the surrounding communities. His daughter Sharon Lake shared some thoughts at the funeral: “Most of you probably know my dad as Leo from Groth Lumber. … The thing I am most proud of about my dad is the way he spent his time in the nursing homes after his strokes. He was in Sunnyside in Cloquet for two years before he moved to his man cave at the Villa Vista in Cromwell. I called it that because he ins... Full story

  • Lands: Past is prologue in new farm formation

    John Hatcher|Feb 26, 2021

With our farm's first growing season fast approaching, a century-old picture on the living room wall inspires us. The image is cloudy and faded at the edges. The faces of the people are blurry. We don't know a lot about the photo except that it's from about 1915 and that two of the people are Ed and Abigail Simpson, who first homesteaded the farm in 1906. The image shows a family and all of their livestock: A team of tall, white horses; five cows and a flock of chickens pecking away in the... Full story

  • Districts honor school board members

    Feb 26, 2021

The Minnesota School Boards Association deemed the past week as Minnesota School Board Recognition Week to build awareness and understanding of the vital function elected school board members play in our society. Cloquet joined other school districts from across the state to celebrate and honor board members for their commitment to students. “Strong schools help build strong communities — and school board members devote countless hours to making sure our schools are helping every child lea... Full story

  • Esko play set during past health scare

    Feb 26, 2021

As with every other sport and activity during the pandemic, Covid-19 brought changes to the one-act play competitions this year. Actors, crew and directors wore masks during rehearsals and performances, and the competition was virtual this year, meaning schools had to submit a video of their performance for judging rather than traveling and doing the show live at the section and subsection competitions. Appropriately, Esko director Joyce Bergstedt chose to do “Lafayette No. 1,” a play set dur... Full story

  • Warm-up adds to delightful day of tournament fishing

    Jana Peterson|Feb 26, 2021

Not everyone was catching fish during Saturday's Kingdom Builders Ministries Fishing Derby, but with blue skies, sunshine and temperatures above 20 degrees at last, who cared? Not Cloquet's Steve Hamlin, who'd been sitting next to a hole in the ice at Chub Lake for more than two hours without a nibble. And not brothers Mike and Gabe Dusek, who were tucked in a nearby tent, gazing through a large Christmas-tree-shaped hole in the ice to the bottom of the lake. "We're just here to goof off and hav... Full story
