  • Knot Pining: Don't mess with da Range

    Mike Creger|Mar 15, 2024

He gave it the old college try. But, they say, when you take on the bull, you get the horns. Or, in social media circles, and toned down for a family newspaper: Mess around and find out. There may be a new old saw: Take on the Iron Range and its taconite money, and you get the tailings. Alas, Sen. Jason Rarick, Carlton County’s representative in the Minnesota Senate, was awash in all of these sentiments last month when he dared to change the way of life on the Iron Range. If you recall, Rarick penned a bill this session that would expand the ...

  • Rebels surge past Bombers

    Kerry Rodd|Mar 15, 2024

It was a tale of two halves last Saturday when No. 4 seed Moose Lake/Willow River and neighboring No. 5 seed Barnum met in the Section 7AA boys basketball quarterfinals in Hermantown. The Bombers came out on fire and surged to a 15-point halftime lead, only to have the Rebels come storming back to sneak away with a 64-63 win. "The first half we executed everything, we took care of the ball and we played really good defense," said Bomber head coach Rich Newman. While Newman was ecstatic about...

  • Lumberjacks bounced in first round

    Kerry Rodd|Mar 15, 2024

It took a nearly flawless game for the North Branch Vikings to beat the Cloquet in the Section 7AAA boys basketball tournament last week. The game was even at 41-41 at halftime on March 6, but the Vikings managed to finally pull away with a 95-85 win and a chance to move into the semifinals. “They played well and we played well,” said Cloquet coach Steve Battaglia. “It took a heck of game to beat us, but in the end they got 12 more rebounds and they were able to close it out.” The Vikings...

    Leola Rodd|Mar 15, 2024

Happy St. Urho’s Day, March 16, to everyone of Finnish heritage. Happy St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, to everyone of Irish heritage. As the days get warmer and daylight lasts a little longer every day, many people begin to plan for summer activities. That also means the rummage and garage sale season is just around the corner. So, start cleaning out the attic, closets, basements and garages (I need to take my own advice, LOL) and donate to our local fundraisers held at the Four Seasons Com...

  • Top-seed Esko proves its mettle

    Dwight Cadwell|Mar 15, 2024

The No. 1 seeded Esko boys basketball team continues to cruise through the Section 7AA playoffs following an 84-47 victory over No. 8 seed Duluth Marshall Saturday at Hermantown High School. Esko struck fast and furiously and used a pressure defense to slow down and frustrate the Hilltoppers top scorer Brooks Johnson, as Esko ran out to a 41-22 lead at halftime of the quarterfinal. "I told the guys not to overlook anyone in the playoffs; we have done that before and it cost us," said Esko head...

  • Raptors rip through Section 7A foess

    Kerry Rodd|Mar 15, 2024

The large Section 7A boys basketball tournament reached a fever pitch Wednesday, with two of the remaining four teams hailing from Carlton County. One of those local teams was expected to be in the mix, while the other has shocked everyone but themselves. On March 7, the No. 1 seed out of the south, Carlton/Wrenshall, easily handled No. 8 south seed South Ridge to the tune of 85-55. "Overall, it was a good team win," said Raptors coach Shawn Filipiak. "We came out a little slow, but we started...

  • Cardinals hit MIB wall in section final

    Dwight Cadwell|Mar 15, 2024

The Cardinals had a chance when they faced Mountain Iron-Buhl in the Section 7A championship game, but the Cromwell-Wright girls basketball team would have had to play a near perfect game to beat the defending state champions. In the end, that game didn't materialize, and the Cardinals fell, 76-35, at Romano Gymnasium on the campus of the University of Minnesota Duluth on March 8. "We picked a bad time to not play our best game of the season, while they played the best game I have seen them...

  • 'Jacks can't get over Rock Ridge in final

    Steve Korby and Jana Peterson|Mar 15, 2024

Hopes for a Cloquet girls basketball trip to state were dashed March 7, when No. 2 seed Cloquet fell to the No. 1 seed Rock Ridge, 58-41, in the Section 7AAA final. It was the second time this season the Lumberjacks played the new cooperative high school formed by joining Eveleth-Gilbert and Virginia, and the second time Cloquet lost. It was a much closer game most of the night than the final score indicated. Lumberjacks head coach Heather Young said they were prepared to face a really good...

  • Cloquet grad is No. 1

    Jana Peterson|Mar 15, 2024

Cloquet's Aidan Ripp is a 2024 national champion four times over, winning every Nordic ski race he competed in last week during the U.S. Collegiate Skiing Nationals championships. Held March 5-9 at Mount Van Hoevenberg in Lake Placid, New York, more than 150 Nordic skiers from colleges around the country competed in four events across five days. From the opening race, Ripp set a pace that was unmatched by anyone in the USCSA, winning the opening 7.5-kilometer skate race by over 44 seconds, and...

  • Cloquet fourth-graders win state championship

    Chloe Farnsworth|Mar 15, 2024

The Cloquet fourth grade girls traveling basketball team won the Tier 6 Grade State tournament on Feb. 25. It was a team effort, said coach Ann Lindner. For the most part, the playing time was equal and each player brought something to the table. "They all have such an important piece to the puzzle," Lindner said. "Without any of them, it would not work. They all deserve a shout out." Lindner's background was also a contributing factor to the girls' win. She played basketball at Cloquet High...
