  • Get the scoop on Document Spring11

    Pine Knot News staff|Mar 29, 2019

The snow is melting fast, which can mean only one thing in Carlton County. (Hint: it’s not flooding. Although maybe flooding is part of the picture … literally.) It’s time to “document spring,” through photographs and an app, using our powers of observation and cell phones, to track and record the progression of the season of rebirth in the Northland. To find out more about this venture — a project of the Oldenburg Arts and Cultural Community (OACC) — we sat down with Document Spring projec...

  • Farms play an important role in water quality

    Kim Samuelson, SWCD News|Mar 29, 2019

It's finally springtime and, after a long winter, many people want to get outside and get busy with outdoor projects. That includes local farmers. For them, spring means that after a long winter of mostly barn living, their animals can finally get out, kick up their heels, and enjoy the spring grasses and warm, sunny weather. However, we have to get through the spring rain and snowmelt season first. With the thought of floodwaters comes the question of what each of us can do to help prevent...

According to the criminal complaint: Following...

  • Businesses invited to help reduce mental illness stigma

    Mar 29, 2019

A local coalition working to eliminate stigma around mental illness is inviting more businesses to get involved in this important cause. Northland Healthy Minds is a collaborative of businesses, organizations and residents in Northeastern Minnesota and Northwestern Wisconsin focused on decreasing mental illness stigma. “Make It OK” was created by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and HealthPartners. Using the campaign elements, Northland Healthy Minds created a customized toolkit for local employers. Northland Healthy Minds wil...

  • There are plenty of options for treatment of back pain

Ken Ripp MD, Health and Wellness|Mar 29, 2019

It has been a long winter for many people. Unless you live for winter sports, this time of year can be a challenge for many, especially with all the snow. One of the tasks we are burdened with here in the Northland is shoveling snow. At least a few times every winter, snow shovelers come to the clinic with mechanical back pain, caused by injury to the muscles, discs, ligaments and tendons in the spinal area, often the result of overuse of the back, such as a long winter of shoveling. An overuse...

    Anne Lundquist, Cloquet Public Library|Mar 29, 2019

Below is an interview with Joe Lambert of Happy Critters Farm. He will be speaking at the library at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 3. Cloquet Public Library: When did you decide to become a farmer? Joe Lambert: Both of us (Joe and Amanda) were born into farm families. I wanted to farm from the first time I showed interest in just about anything. I...

  • Mental health evaluation ordered for murder suspect

    Jana Peterson, Pine Knot News|Mar 29, 2019

A judge has ordered a mental health evaluation for a man accused of shooting and killing his uncle in rural Carlton County last April. James Francis Montano, 33, of Bayfield County, was arrested in April 2018 for shooting his uncle, 57-year-old Andrew James Gokee, and injuring Gokee's son, 38-year-old Hudson Gauthier, who is Montano's cousin. Montano was indicted on first-degree premeditated murder charges by a grand jury on March 7. The grand jury also indicted him on charges of intentional...

  • How will we survive the summer?

    Pete Radosevich, Harrys Gang|Mar 29, 2019

One of the nice things about spring break is that your children are home for a whole week. One of the things that strikes terror in the hearts of parents is that their children are home for a whole week during spring break. It’s times like this that I advocate for year-round school. Six days a week. 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Twelve months a year. Maybe an extra day off at Christmas, and maybe an occasional Saturday. I’m joking, of course. I love spending quality time with my children. They’re fun, inqui...

  • Are we listening? (Our youth examined)

    Uriah Wilkinson, The Political Account|Mar 29, 2019

In the early portion of the sermon given by my pastor last Sunday, he indicated that major depression and suicide in the United States has risen to such a shocking number that we should be calling this an “epidemic.” Some of the statistics he was throwing out there were hard to swallow. Not that I don’t trust his information to be accurate, but I personally needed to verify the data for myself. I used the word “shocking,” but this is downright scary! According to Blue Cross Blue Shield, t...

  • Contest!

    Ann Markusen, Community Columnist|Mar 29, 2019

It's been many years since I've been surrounded by students in their daytime setting, the high school. And I've only sporadically accompanied singers on the piano. In high school, I'd play the national anthem and school song at assemblies. But that was low-level compared to supporting soloists - nine of them - at the annual Minnesota State High School League Music Contest held earlier this month at the University of Minnesota Duluth. It was a challenging role. Any mistake will be obvious both...

  • If Essentia expands to Cloquet

    Mar 29, 2019

Rumors that Essentia bought the former Applebee’s site and surrounding properties were not exactly squelched when their public relations officer vaguely told the Pine Knot News that they are evaluating multiple sites for possible expansion. That Essentia has spread throughout northeastern Minnesota is no secret, as the former St. Mary’s-Duluth Clinic has expanded admirably in the past 20 years. But this expansion has not affected Cloquet yet, mostly because of the excellent local hospital and clinic we have in our community: Community Mem...

  • 'Food prepper' is ready for anything Freeze drying food is tasty and nutritious, says Carlson

    Lois E. Johnson, Pine Knot News|Mar 29, 2019

Laurie Carlson was at loose ends after she finished renovating her cabin a couple of years ago. But then she met someone who told her about freeze drying foods, and she found her new passion. "It was a lady that I had met through my cousin that told me about freeze drying foods," the Holyoke resident said in an interview earlier this year. "I have always been preserving foods by canning, dehydrating and drying." Carlson ordered her first freeze dryer in the spring of 2017, and now she has two....

  • Retired chief files new complaint

    Jana Peterson, Pine Knot News|Mar 29, 2019

Former Cloquet police chief Wade Lamirande has filed a new complaint against the department he used to oversee. On Friday, March 22 Lamirande emailed a complaint to Cloquet city councilors, city administrator Aaron Reeves, and local newspapers, along with a photograph of four uniformed Cloquet police officers posing for a photo with former Cloquet mayor Dave Hallback (also a retired Cloquet policeman), who is holding a “Re-elect Dave Hallback for Mayor” sign. Lamirande filed complaints aga...

  • Search for truth, goodness and beauty leads to God

    Father Fish, Queen of Peace|Mar 29, 2019

One of the great things about being a part of the Cloquet community is participating in the different local events and activities that take place throughout the year. This past February I listened every morning to the clues for the Groundhog Day Medallion Hunt on WKLK. Lacking the ambition to actually go searching for the medallion, I did like hearing the clues and trying to figure out where it was hidden. I imagine the gentleman who found the medallion enjoyed not only finding it, but also the search itself. Searching and seeking are an...

  • Destination ImagiNation goes to state

    Pine Knot News staff|Mar 29, 2019

When the regional Destination Imagination meet was canceled due to predictions of a winter storm last month, the DI statewide organization made an executive decision: they would send every team on to the state meet. It can be difficult to describe Destination Imagination to a person who hasn't experienced it. Some say the project-based academic challenges teach kids "how to think" - not what to think. Teachers like the way DI blends STEM education with the arts and social entrepreneurship. Many...

  • Historic Scott House: Where history and imagination meet

    Ed Newman, Pine Knot News|Mar 29, 2019

For some, it’s the region’s best kept secret. For others, the events at Historic Scott House have been creating memories for years. Whether it’s the ever popular Pub Night on St. Patrick’s Day or inventively themed gatherings, Scott House has evolved into a community treasure. At first blush it almost seems to be in the middle of nowhere, located on County Road 4 — a skip and a jump beyond Wrenshall. How did this very special place get built in such a peaceful location so far off the beaten pa...
