  • Hundreds of Minnesota facilities to test for 'forever chemicals'

    Kirsti Marohn, MPR News|Apr 1, 2022

Nearly 400 wastewater treatment plants, industrial facilities, airports and landfills across Minnesota will begin monitoring for PFAS this year, state regulators said on Tuesday. They say the data collected will provide vital clues about how and where the ubiquitous compounds known as “forever chemicals” are getting into Minnesota’s air, water and soil. PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are a large class of human-made chemicals known for their durability. They’re found in a wide variety of industrial processes and commerc... Full story

  • Our View: Racist comments have no place

    Apr 1, 2022

It was the Snapchat heard around the world, or at least the part of the globe where most of our readers live and work. A tossed off conversation between teenage boys on social media, packed with racist comments that they apparently thought were somehow cool, or funny. They were neither. They were appalling. But anyone who sent messages threatening to harm the boys should also be ashamed. Threatening the writers isn’t going to make them better people … and that’s the goal, isn’t it? In some cases — i.e., a Facebook conversation between a...

  • Knot Pining: It's time for new state flag

    Mike Creger|Apr 1, 2022

Don't blame the flag designer from 1893. It was a rush job, with one significant requirement that is vexing vexillologists today. That's the word used for flag experts, people who study and comment on flag design. This month, the state legislature is mulling the idea of a new state flag. For years, vexillologists have urged a new flag based on some pretty solid design principles. Our flag is unremarkable, a state seal on a blue background like so many other state flags. It is printed on one...

  • On The Mark: Invasion thwarts democracy

    Ann Markusen|Apr 1, 2022

Russia’s current invasion of Ukraine, a peaceful independent nation, can only be explained by revisiting late 20th-century history. I am rusty on much of this, so I’ve spent some time reviewing the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. The totalitarian Soviet Union began to change course in the mid-1980s when Mikhail Gorbachev, as general secretary of the Communist Party, initiated glasnost, supporting more open discussion of political and social issues and ushering in democratization of the... Full story

  • Letter to the editor: Sheda is not alone

    Apr 1, 2022

I would like to respond to the article “One-man battle on petition continues” regarding the Wrenshall schools. First, Tony Sheda isn’t the only one who’s upset with how things were handled with the petition costs. The next statement that upsets me was the comment that when people went door-to-door, community members were upset about how the board appointment was handled. Not one person came to our door. I was also told (it was implied) that I had no business discussing the petition as I have no children in the school the day I stopped at Hugh L... Full story

  • Letter to the editor: Thanks for the memories

    Apr 1, 2022

I greatly appreciated Steve Korby's article on Dickie Eklund and Ray Poirier. I didn't know Dickie well, but I remember him riding his bike with Ray. My band was not a polka band, but we did do "Just Because" and the "Tick Tock Polka" for Ray to sing. His timing was impeccable. Len was a saint. He sometimes would hire Frankie Yankovic to play at the Elmwood as a special treat for his customers. Frankie was a saint also. Ray gave me one of the cards Frankie had printed just for him. Ray was very... Full story

  • Wilderness spring past Jr. Blues

    Apr 1, 2022

Niko Rexine scored twice and Will Persson added a goal and an assist in leading the Minnesota Wilderness to a 5-2 victory over the Springfield Jr. Blues Thursday night, March 31. A tight one-goal game going into the 3rd period opened up when Persson scored what resulted in the game-winner 3:06 into the frame. After getting a pass from Max Neill, the veteran from Bjorklinge, Sweden, sprung through on a break along the left wing wall, and fired a shot that sailed over the glove of Springfield... Full story

  • Girls find common grounders in Carlton, Wrenshall softball pairing

    Kerry Rodd|Apr 1, 2022

For Carley Lawry, one draw for the new pairing of Carlton and Wrenshall athletes in softball are the Raptors uniforms. "The jersey colors are snazzy," the eighth-grader said Tuesday at practice in a chilly Four Seasons arena in Carlton. But forgive the teams if they aren't exactly decked out in cool new uniforms to start a season that was expected to kick off today with games at Mountain Iron-Buhl. The school districts applied for the cooperative program at the 11th hour last month when... Full story

  • Wilderness win streak lands them in third

    Kerry Rodd|Apr 1, 2022

Just a few months ago the Minnesota Wilderness were in fifth place in the North American Hockey League Midwest Division. Only the top four teams in each division make the playoffs, and the team was struggling with injuries and keeping the puck out of the net. "We were hurting at the time," said Wilderness head coach Dave Boitz. "We had a nine-game losing streak, a lot of bad luck, key injuries and we struggled to stop the puck. All of that made for a bad situation for us." Boitz, who also acts... Full story

  • Goalie wins top award

    Kerry Rodd|Apr 1, 2022

A year ago Katelyn Olson was waiting to take over as the Lumberjacks girls soccer team starting goaltender. Last fall she helped lead her Lumberjacks to the Class AA Minnesota state soccer tournament, where they had their best finish ever. A week ago she was told she won the prestigious Minnesota Indian Education Association's Outstanding American Indian Female Athlete award. "I was pretty surprised to find out that I had won the award," Olson said. "I am very grateful for the award and it is so... Full story
