  • Letter to the editor: Politicians need to change for future

    Pine Knot News|Apr 2, 2021

The world changes. Our community or ecosystem changes and our ecosystem struggles to survive today. Gandhi made an observation about the future and suggested that actions taken today affect the future. Heraclitus, a Greek philosopher, referenced nothing stays stagnant because change is happening around us. Our learned experiences are part of our individual restructuring process. We have forgotten our high school civics lessons or have a mental model of how things should be, which limits our growth opportunities to add restructuring value....

  • Section 5A: Barnum goes down against fast Upsala

    Kerry Rodd|Apr 2, 2021

When Barnum met Upsala in the Section 5A semifinals March 24, the Bombers knew they would be facing a team with both athleticism and speed. Barnum fell behind early, but hung around and fell 66-56 to the Cardinals. “They rely on spreading the floor,” said Barnum coach Rich Newman. “They like to dribble and drive and then kick the ball out for the three-pointer.” The Cardinals jumped out to an 11-2 lead and had the Bombers in a bit of trouble early in the game. Barnum trailed by just four at... Full story

  • GUEST VIEW: Line 3 is 'game over' for the environment

    Pine Knot News|Apr 2, 2021

I remember reading about 10 years ago that, if Canada’s tar sands ever go into full production, it will be “Game over for the environment.” The article argued that climate change would be thrown into overdrive. Without energy, there can be no economic activity. Without energy, there are no usable natural resources. When we still lived as hunter gatherers, we used the caloric energy in our food to hunt and gather more food. Those who expended more energy hunting and gathering than they gained from hunting and gathering, would perish. Then we di... Full story

  • Golf takes Hudler to far-flung places

    Steve Korby|Apr 2, 2021

Wendy Hudler is one of few Carlton County high school graduates who have played Division 1 college golf and professional golf. Hudler grew up on Chestnut Street just above Pinehurst Park in Cloquet. Her family's home was adjacent to an open lot where kids could play outside year-round. Jim Tomhave was a neighborhood buddy. She had older brothers and a sister as well. Occasionally, her brothers used to pack her up with pillows and a face mask when they needed a goalie for their shinny hockey game... Full story

  • Big Lake golf course has new owner group

    Steve Korby|Apr 2, 2021

Golf has survived the pandemic, albeit with a few changes in Carlton County the past year. After some pandemic unknowns, the Cloquet Country Club, the Moose Lake Golf Club, and Pine Hill Golf Club opened with restrictions and special rules. Surprisingly, these courses had record player turnout and golf rounds posted. In July of 2020, the Mahtowa 29 Pines Golf Club was sold to Jim and Colleen Myhre and the course name changed to the Rugged Spruce Golf Club. It opened around Labor Day with much... Full story

  • Public face of community college is retiring

    Pine Knot News staff|Apr 2, 2021

Got questions about Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College? For more than two decades, Tom Urbanski has been the person to ask many of those questions as the lead person for marketing and public relations. If Tom didn't know, he'd be able to point you in the right direction, almost always with an affable grin and likely more information than you even knew you needed. At the same time, Urbanski has woven himself into the fabric of the larger Cloquet area community, serving on the city's Parks...

    Anne Dugan|Apr 2, 2021

Homecoming week for Wrenshall is coming up next week and despite the differences in its delivery, it will be full of festivities. There are dress up days throughout the week and, given that some parents are still having to work from home, they might want to get in on the costuming as well. Tuesday is sports day, Wednesday is pajama day, Thursday is cartoon day, and Friday is school spirit day. The actual homecoming coronation ceremony will be livestreamed on the Wrenshall School Facebook page....

  • Dan Kraker, MPR News|Apr 2, 2021

In late February, Taysha Martineau walked out of the protest camp she built in a small patch of woods near her home on the Fond du Lac Indian Reservation and knelt in the middle of the road. Elders from her community surrounded her, scolding, telling her to leave. "Go," they shouted. "We want you out of here. Don't do this to us." For several weeks, Martineau had been welcoming activists to the plot of land she had dubbed Camp Miigizi - which means "eagle" in the Ojibwe language - to take part...  Website
