    Five Esko football players from the Class of 2023 have signed to play college football. College-bound Eskomo players include Matthew Peterson (St. John's), Nolan Witt (Wisconsin-Stout), Javonte Gregory (Winona), Ty Christensen (Concordia Moorhead) and Wyatt Hudspith (Gustavus).   • Trout season set to open Saturday

    Minnesota’s stream trout season opens Saturday with quality fishing opportunities in every region of the state, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources reports. Brook trout and splake fishing also open on Lake Superior and its tributary streams. Minnesota has roughly 3,800 miles of designated trout streams. Anglers fishing on designated trout waters must have a trout stamp validation in addition to an angling license.     This year’s population estimate of 3,290 moose marks a decade of Minnesota’s moose population remaining relatively stable, according to the results of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ 2023 aerial population survey. Although the estimate dropped from 2022’s estimate of 4,700, the change continues to reflect the population stability observed in previous years.     Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College is hosting its annual Earth Week Celebration April 17-20. It will feature presenters, games, prizes and food.     The University of Minnesota has received a $319,820 grant from the Minnesota Forest Resources Council to assess carbon sequestration, storage, and emissions associated with Minnesota forests and forest products. The Department of Natural Resources says that in one year, Minnesota’s forests absorbed 19 million tons of carbon dioxide. That’s the equivalent of taking 4 million gas-powered cars off the road for an entire year.
