A few miles west of Cloquet, in the heart of the Fond du Lac Reservation, sits the Cloquet Forestry Center. Owned by the University of Minnesota, the woodland site has been the primary research and education forest for the university since 1909. It is the oldest experimental forest under continuous operation by a university in the United States, according to Al Alm, professor emeritus and former CFC director. That could change in the not so distant future, as university officials have been...
The only person to propose a plan at Tuesday's county redistricting hearing was an Esko High School student. He was also the only person to get his plan in on time. Senior Nathan Barta explained his proposal for redrawing the boundaries of Carlton County's five commissioner districts, pointing out his plan kept the districts close to dead even in population as tabulated by the 2020 Census. As required by Minnesota state statute, county commissioners had called for a hearing on the redistricting...
The Carlton County Historical Society has this iconic photo of a Greyhound bus with formal lettering on the border saying, simply, “Barnum, Minnesota.” It’s as if it were a promotional piece or souvenir photo. Who knows? Close inspection shows that it was a charter bus, so perhaps this was a special occasion back in the 1950s. Was there a bus stop in Barnum? Can you divine where this photo was taken, given the background? Let us know at the History Mystery desk, news@PineKnot...
A total of 19 Cloquet students, along with research mentors Dr. Cynthia Welsh and William Bauer, attended the Minnesota State Science & Engineering Fair earlier this month. The event was held online and, once again, Cloquet students were awarded plenty of hardware. Four Cloquet students won the top awards at the fair, what the host, Minnesota Academy of Science, calls the Grand Awards that recognize excellence in scientific research. Silver Grand medals went to the top 10 percent of the...
Pine Knot photo contributor Dan Malkovich got up and close to a turbulent St. Louis River in Jay Cooke State Park on Monday. He’s a regular visitor and said the big melt, along with stormy, wet weather, has changed the river in the past two weeks. It was “mild-mannered and calm on March 31,” he said. “But by April 11, following several days of melting temperatures and constant rain, it had turned into a raging torrent....
The Thomson Township Board of Supervisors voted to sign a letter of support for Carlton County’s planned reconstruction project for County State Aid Highway 61 at its meeting on April 7. Following a presentation by county engineer JinYeene Neumann and discussion with a concerned resident of the township, the board offered the support so the county can begin applying for a grant to help fund the project, set for construction in 2025. The Minnesota Wilderness has enjoyed a huge second-half resurgence this season and are fighting for a top playoff spot in the North American Hockey League. What most local fans of the Cloquet-based team do not know is the significant impact the team has made in the upper echelons of college hockey and even the professional hockey ranks. Just this past month, 14 former Wilderness players played in the NCAA Division I hockey tournament, with six on the roster for University of Minnesota Duluth alo...

Hopes the Minnesota Wilderness will ensure a chance to play in the postseason will have to wait one more week, as they fell Saturday to the Janesville Jets, 6-3. The Jets scored twice in the first period and built a 5-1 lead before the midway point of the game. Two late Minnesota goals made things interesting in the final few minutes, but the Jets ultimately hung on for the victory, which kept their own playoff aspirations alive. The win gave Janesville 67 points and moved them back within three points of the Wilderness, who sit in third in...
Opening the high school softball season against one of the top teams in the area is never easy, but to open on the road when your team has not had a chance to practice outside is even tougher. That was the case for the Cloquet girls softball team Monday when they opened at Superior in a 16-1 loss to the Spartans. "It was tough on the girls because we haven't taken any grounders off dirt and only about a half hour of fly balls outside, so the adjustment was tough," said Cloquet head coach Tyler...

Happy Easter. Why does the Resurrection actually matter? As Christians, we take it for granted that Jesus of Nazareth was killed and rose from the dead and will not die again. But we may not actually connect the dots and truly appreciate why it matters to us today. Why does that historical event, one which can be verified as any other true historical event, matter in the year of our Lord, 2022? The resurrection of Jesus proves that God does care about the brokenness of our world — and He makes i...

With the publication of his new book, "We spoke of many things," Carlton County historian, playwright, journalist, businessman and political activist Dan Reed completed what was really a lifelong project last year. The book tells the story of generations of Reed's ancestors as they made their way to and from Finland to northern Minnesota, with many settling in the Automba area where Reed still lives and serves as a township supervisor. It is culled from recollections of visits over 60 years,...
It was an exciting night in the Cromwell-Wright school auditorium last Thursday. It began with 11 of our high school choral students singing their hearts out in solos, duets, and ensembles. The solos included two operatic pieces, both in Italian. Andrea Pocernich sang “Che Fiero Costume,” an Italian aria that furiously castigates Cupid for his machinations as a “tyrannous mentor.” Lithuanian exchange student Augustas Poskus sang the powerful “Vittoria, Mio Core,” celebrating the protagonist...

After Cloquet school board members seemed to indicate in March they were OK with the idea of increasing player fees for hockey, four of five board members present voted against the proposal Monday. Hockey players already pay the highest school activity fee. On the other hand, the cost of the high school program is far less than families pay for youth hockey as their children get older, superintendent Michael Cary had pointed out in March. According to the Cloquet Amateur Hockey Association website, the top fee for Bantam players (ages 13-14)...
“Suite Surrender” has surrendered to the pandemic, at least for now. The first weekend was postponed when one actor got Covid, now the second weekend is also postponed after two more actors came down with the bug. “We decided to stop all rehearsals and shows to let our actors recoup and to stop further infections,” said general manager Joel Soukkala. “We have taken Covid very seriously over the last few years while still finding ways to be creative.” The County Seat Theater Company will now present live performances of ‘Suite Surrender’ on...
