    Rebekah King|Apr 15, 2022

The beginning of spring has left Esko students itching to get outside. With the approval to create a school forest by the Esko school board and a solar panel project continuing to be developed, the district is excited to give students more opportunities to learn about the environment around them by exploring it firsthand. Esko third-grade teacher Steve Krueger and some of his colleagues recognized the importance of getting students outside and active while they are learning. During discussions about developing outdoor classrooms for teachers...

  • Wrenshall: Board, teachers close to deal

    Mike Creger|Apr 15, 2022

Contract negotiations between the Wrenshall school district and its teachers went to the rare step of mediation last month in order to resolve sticking points. The Wrenshall school board on Monday agreed to table approval of the eventual agreement until members can check the 36-page document that some received only just before the meeting. The contract, expected to be formally approved by the board at a special meeting next week, will date back to July 1, 2021. One board goal, to increase the starting wage for new teachers in the district,...

  • Wilderness down to the wire for playoff berth

    Apr 15, 2022

The Minnesota Wilderness won't know their postseason fate until the last game of the season after falling to the Chippewa Steel 7-2 Friday night in Wisconsin. It’s the second loss in as many tries for the Wilderness (34-23-2) when they have been in position to nail down a spot in this season’s NAHL Robertson Cup playoffs. Seven different goal scorers connected for Chippewa (25-31-3). Kade Neilson, Brady Yakesh and Jackson Bisson built a 3-0 lead with tallies in the opening frame, as the Steel dominated in shots on goal 15-6. It appeared Minneso...

  • Our View: Move over, slow down

    Apr 15, 2022

Last Friday, a local firefighter could have been hit by a passing driver. Fortunately, he had retrieved the equipment he was taking from the rescue truck before the driver demolished the traffic cone near the truck, without even slowing down. When you see emergency responders — police, firefighters, ambulance, tow truck drivers — responding to roadway incidents, move over and slow down. It’s common sense and it’s also the law. Minnesota’s Ted Foss Move Over Law, named in honor of the State Pat...

  • Letter: Trip was pure education

    Apr 15, 2022

While all the attention in the Pine Knot News about being stranded in Miami was fun for our young travelers, I just want to clarify that the trip to Costa Rica was part of a class for educational credit. The itinerary of the trip is very robust and educational. The students are with local Spanish teachers, other chaperones, and a local Costa Rican guide (expert in the history, culture and flora and fauna of Costa Rica) all the time. Because the students are in class all day with teachers (we make the world our classroom), the students on this t...

  • Knot Pining: Discourse as discord rises

    Mike Creger|Apr 15, 2022

Sometimes I feel like I’m 12 years old. Other times I feel all of the many decades of my nose to the journalism grindstone. It’s a constant battle of finding the youthful energy to be indignant versus what the spent energy will yield in the end for one who’s seen this all before. This too, shall pass. Ignore all the noise. Save your energy. The current state of public discourse on a national and local level has reached an unnerving point, especially in a state known for its civic sense of duty and interest in getting a fair shake for everyone....
