After a one-year hiatus, the Cloquet boys and girls track teams finally got back on track (literally) last week when they participated in the North Central Quadrangular meet in Cambridge Thursday. Both teams showed they are a force, with the girls taking first and the boys team finishing second. "I was just happy to get the team out there and give them a track meet," said Cloquet coach Tim Prosen, who had to postpone Cloquet's first two home meets because of the weather. "Overall, we had a solid...
It took a year, but local track teams got a chance to show their abilities last Thursday when many of the smaller county school teams participated in an early season meet hosted by the Eskomos. "We had six teams total: ourselves, Carlton, Moose Lake-Willow Ridge, South Ridge, Wrenshall and Cromwell," said Esko girls coach Matt Peterson. "It felt great to be back competing in a track meet after losing our 2019 season due to Covid. You can see it every day in practice, our kids are enjoying not...
Like the weather this spring, the first softball game of the season for Cloquet and Esko was all over the place. Initially, Esko took a 9-2 lead after two innings and looked to be cruising to an easy win. But the Lumberjacks had other ideas and rallied with four runs in the third, two in the fourth, three in the fifth and two more in the sixth inning, as they went from seven runs down to leading 13-10 after the Eskomos managed only one run in four innings. "Our girls came out swinging and...
In advance of Friday's first home meet in chilly but sunny weather, Cloquet's top golfer, Sam Baker, was wearing a light jacket ... and an enormous pair of what looked like insulated oven mitts. Baker shed the mittens by the second hole, but the senior stayed hot on the golf course, taking the top spot for the second time in the first two meets of the season. As a team, Cloquet dominated the meet on their home course at the Cloquet Country Club, taking first place with 311 strokes, followed by...

Last week the Wrenshall kindergarten class did some great worm rescuing after so many got displaced by the rainy weather. The students read books about the life cycle of a worm, learned the names of their body parts and were able to study them up close with magnifying glasses. The common earthworm has some surprises that might not be obvious given their bland beige exterior. They have five hearts and can live for up to 10 years. The myth that you can cut a worm up and it will turn into two, is...
On the morning of April 23rd, heaven came to reclaim an angel, our friend and mother Jan Evans. She passed away from complications from a recent struggle with cancer. Janet Helen Smail was born Aug. 17, 1947 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to Edward and Wanda Smail. She graduated from Maine South High School in Park Ridge, Illinois in 1965. She then attended college at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, where she studied special education. In 1969, Jan married Jim Evans and taught special education until they moved to Duluth in 1973. They wor...
