Every year, there seems to be more and more buzz about bees, butterflies, and pollinators. More information seems to come out about their benefits, pesticide alternatives for your plants, or the “top 5” things you can do encourage more visits to your flower or vegetable garden. Great as it is to have an abundance of resources, it can turn into quite the task to sift through and turn it into action. It’s understandable that for many, the process of picking out plants that are well-suited for thei...
Golf courses across the state got some good news last week when Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz decided to allow courses to open, albeit with some restrictions. The Friday announcement was perfect timing for the Cloquet Country Club, which will open pretty much on schedule as with past seasons. "We may look at the driving range opening this coming weekend depending on the weather," said Cloquet Country Club general manager and golf pro Bill Manahan. "The golf course itself [will open] most likely next...
Apparently I should have been a comedy writer. After last week’s column I’ve been inundated with comments from people who said they got a kick out of me describing the daily walks my wife and I take. Some of the comments even came while I was out walking this week. Some of them are quite humorous. One of the first comments I heard was how could I dare refer to my wife as “wife No. 1” without her getting mad? Well, that is easy to answer. She says she won’t get mad unless there becomes a “wife N...
Let's face it, this pandemic is changing us. If not seriously ill, people have time to stop, think, and actually ask themselves: "What should I do next?" The following story has nothing to do with the coronavirus, but does illustrate the realm of ideas possible for those contemplating retirement or individuals with time on their hands and a willingness to pursue dreams. Dave Antus grew up in Cloquet close to where the Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College is today. He was an active child and...
Hubert Humphrey, as quoted in the Pine Knot News last week, said in Cloquet in 1970: “Every lake in this state is part of your front yard. When people start polluting the air, polluting the rivers, dumping their sewage into the lakes and rivers, spewing up their smoke and fumes into the atmosphere, what they’re really doing is taking a great big garbage truck and just driving up to your house and dumping it.” This quote gives people the realistic perspective of what is happening in our world today. No one wants a garbage truck to come and d...
Dear older generations, Hi. I’m a part of the generation who’s still in school, whose voice is heard but ignored, the generation where our opinions don’t matter yet. Don’t you just love the aroma of spring flowers, luminous lake waters, the taste of a fresh-picked strawberry, and fascinating blue skies? Me too. So why would we take it away from future generations? We are killing the earth and nobody believes us because we are young. In school, we learned about cool animals, ones with stripes or really tall ones. What about future generat...
Cloquet High School student Abigail Smith has been dazzling judges at science fair competitions since she was in middle school, and that hasn't stopped now that she's a senior. PolyMet Mining officials awarded Smith its top scholarship of $5,000 at the boys state hockey tournament in early March. The photo above is from the on-air presentation of the award by Ch. 45 sportscaster Joe Schmit. In the presentation, PolyMet president and CEO Jon Cherry said the company likes to support students...
The arts have been an important refuge for folks during this global pandemic. For some it might be binge-watching a TV series or catching up on the bedstand stack of books, but in Wrenshall the community is getting creative with how they are taking in and producing a shared culture. Seniors in Jeanna Aldridge's class recreated famous works of art using only materials they had at home. Wrenshall's Tom Cawcutt Sr. has started a weekly live concert series from the comfort of his own home. Cawcutt...
As we go through another month of “stay at home” orders, I hope you all are staying put, staying safe and staying healthy. I have heard of a few cases of COVID-19 in Carlton County, but so far we have only a limited number of folks infected. Let’s hope it stays that way. One good thing about the shutdown is when I got my gas card bill, it was $46 for the last 30 days. Usually it’s more than $150, but the most I drive now is 20 miles a week to Wright and Cromwell. Oh, also the gas prices have com...
After the first positive case of COVID-19 was confirmed at the Moose Lake prison on March 30, inmates at the Willow River correctional facility, just 8 miles down the road, started getting nervous. By then, no visitors had been allowed into either facility for more than two weeks. But the Moose Lake and Willow River programs share a warden and some staff. And until last week, nobody on either campus was required to wear masks. Prisons, jails and other correctional facilities, where inmates live...
