The Cloquet High School boys golf team traveled to Red Wing to take on the Wingers at the Mississippi National Golf Links on April 17. Cold temperatures and ominous skies greeted the Esko and Barnum softball teams Tuesday afternoon in Esko. Fortunately, the rain held off and both teams did their best to keep warm with temperatures dropping to around 38 degrees by game time. Following the great success of its bird exhibit two years ago, The Knot gallery opened its "Fish and Fowl" exhibit to a crowd of local art fans Friday evening. Work by eight local artists and photographers are on display, some for sale. The artworks are unique, as are the people who created them. The Animikii Mazina'iganan: Thunderbird Press team joins the community of small regional presses in our area with its first publication, "Fur Trade Nation: An Ojibwe's Graphic History." The new press will celebrate with a release party Tuesday. Jon Malcolm Swenson, 91, of Cromwell passed away Monday, April 22, 2024, in his home with loving family by his side. Jon was born Aug. 8, 1932, to Enock and Olga Swenson on a farm in Kandiyohi County. Jon was a farmhand for his uncle during high school. He graduated from Willmar schools in 1950 and entered the U.S. Army March 10, 1951, as an Army infantry corporal. He left the service on Feb. 17, 1954. Florian W. Chmielewski Sr., 97, of Sturgeon Lake, Minnesota passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family. Florian was one of 15 children born to Tony and Tillie Chmielewski on the family farm in Sturgeon Lake on Feb. 10, 1927. He was a dairy farmer, a world-renowned Minnesota musician, and a state senator for 26 years. Daniel E. "Dan" Frigon, 91, of North Oaks, Minnesota, formerly of Duluth and Fountain Hills, Arizona, passed away peacefully at home on April 17, 2024, with his beloved wife, Mary, by his side. This past March, the Cromwell-Wright senior high choir had the privilege of embarking on a trip to honor veterans, a trip they’d been planning since October of last year. On April 26, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office responded to multiple unrelated crashes in the timeframe of just 35 minutes. At approximately 8:39 p.m., deputies were dispatched to the area of mile marker 10 of Hwy 33 in Brevator Township for a report of a vehicle that struck a deer in the southbound lane before driving off the roadway and colliding with trees.
