  • 'Jacks come out on top in high-scoring affair

    Kerry Rodd|Apr 30, 2021

The hitting shoes were on for two local baseball teams on Friday, but the Lumberjacks had just a little more punch in their lineup as they downed the Rebels 19-11. "There was a lot of offense by both teams," said Cloquet coach Tyler Olin. "Any day both teams have 10-plus hits, the bats are hot! It was a nice job at the plate for both teams." Moose Lake/Willow River edged ahead 3-0 in the first inning, but Cloquet bounced back with three runs in the top of the second. Again the Rebels gained the...

  • Girls golf team gets 'back in the swing of things'

    Kerry Rodd|Apr 30, 2021

This spring hasn't exactly been cooperative when it comes to high school golf teams, and the Lumberjacks girls team is no exception. The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton players were able to finally hit the links last Friday after having two other meets canceled due to wet conditions this spring. "We had an early start this year, but we haven't been able to take advantage of it because of the weather so far," said CEC girls coach Matt Carlson. "However, anytime you can get out in April is a bonus. We are...

  • Tennis team battles inexperience, weather

    Kerry Rodd|Apr 30, 2021

After losing last year to the pandemic, it's been a bit of a struggle for the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys tennis team early in the season. The Lumberjacks are 0-5 in matches so far and lost a pair of matches last week to Hermantown and Grand Rapids. "We are an inexperienced team," said CEC coach Derek Johnson. "We have a lot of new guys on the roster after not having a season due to Covid last year." The boys team has just two returners - Adam Blesener and Ethan Doty - from two years ago who have...

USA Nordic released the names of 45 American athletes nominated for its 2021-22 national and junior nordic combined and ski jumping teams Tuesday. Two of those names hail from the Cloquet Ski Club and the same house: Aidan Ripp, 20, and his sister, Charlotte Ripp, 16, were both named to the U.S. Nordic Combined junior teams for men and women according to an announcement posted on the website. Nordic combined is a sport that combines ski jumping with Nordic skiing competitions. A sophomore at...

  • April brought respite from dry spell

    Dave Anderson|Apr 30, 2021

The National Weather Service ingests data everyday from 900 automated stations in the United States. Since we are such a large nation, that's just not enough info for weather forecasting and climate calculation. NWS is also bolstered by 10,000 volunteer observers in the National Weather Service Cooperative Observer Program. Started in 1890, the program gathers info from farms, urban and suburban areas, National Parks and even seashores and mountaintops. There are observers in every state and...

  • Snowy Bonnet

    Pine Knot News|Apr 30, 2021

Saturday morning, daffodils awoke with a snowy bonnet as spring suffered a setback. Photographer and retired doctor Dana Malkovich is hopeful, though. “As with many setbacks, we square our shoulders and soldier on, as warmer weather will surely follow, and the daffodils will not come to any lasting harm from a little snow,” he wrote....

  • Wright/Cromwell news

    Jennie K. Hanson|Apr 30, 2021

At the latest quarterly Carlton County Health and Human Services meeting April 12, I learned about the Covid-19 response here in Carlton County. According to HHS director Dave Lee, 50 percent of residents have been vaccinated, and we need to get about 5,000 more residents vaccinated to reach 70 percent. So, if you have yet to get vaccinated, please call the Minnesota Department of Health Covid-19 Public Hotline at 833-431-2053 or check the vaccination website vaccineconnector.mn.gov for more...

  • Get your July Fourth questions answered here

    Pine Knot News|Apr 30, 2021

After July Fourth celebrations were canceled en masse last summer due to the pandemic, community members are looking forward to some sort of celebration of our nation’s birthday this summer in Cloquet. What kind of celebration is the big question. After all, Covid-19 hasn’t gone away. In fact, thanks to variants and the fact that plenty of people are not yet fully vaccinated, it may even be making a comeback. With that in mind, we sat down with July Fourth coordinator Alyson Leno and her top...

  • Child dies from Covid-19

    Pine Knot News|Apr 30, 2021

The Minnesota Department of Health confirmed Monday that a child under age 10 from southwestern Minnesota died from complications from Covid-19. While Covid-related deaths in children are rare, they can occur even in otherwise healthy children. Since the start of the pandemic, three Minnesota children under age 18 have died due to Covid-19. The MDH issued this statement Monday: “Since children under 16 are not yet eligible to receive a Covid-19 vaccine, the best approach we all can take to keep children safe is to make sure those around them w...

  • Online gypsy moth informational meetings set for May 5

    Apr 30, 2021

Gypsy moths are ranked among America’s most destructive tree pests. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is hosting two virtual meetings on May 5 to share information with residents about gypsy moth treatments proposed for Northeast Minnesota. The MDA monitors for gypsy moth each year, watching for start-up infestations. When an infestation is found, the department conducts aerial treatments using an organic insecticide and targets the infestation before it can spread. Three t...
