In March of this year, I turned 81. This is the first year that it was a very quiet and reserved celebration with my wife, as it has always been a time for my family and friends to come together and celebrate. On the bright side, staying home more this past month has given us time to clean and go through my office, which is full of family history. Our home has become a collection of memorabilia, filled with photos and diaries of my family history. The collection goes from the 1800s to the...
Anticipation was running high in mid-March for the Cloquet girls softball players. The Lumberjacks had returned to the gym and were preparing to defend their Section 7AAA title and make a run at a state title after finishing third last spring. Then, five days into practice, everything was shut down as the COVID-19 pandemic hit. "The practice vibe was one of excitement and a ton of energy," said first-year coach Andrew Miller. "As coaches, we really put a premium on focused effort and constant hu...
The 2020 NFL draft is history, and provided history at the same time. For the first time the draft was not held in a centralized location. It was held from the basements, kitchens, recreation rooms and living rooms of the homes of general managers, coaches and players. Even NFL commissioner Roger Goodell did his part by hosting the draft live from his basement in New York. It had to be done, and it worked, thanks to newer technology. It brought back a flood of memories as I thought back to when...

Charlie Jensen was a successful Cloquet golfer who learned by watching others and trying to duplicate their methods. He grew up on Summit Avenue in Cloquet, about a block from the Cloquet Country Club. His parents were active members at club. He thinks he was 7 or 8 when his parents gave him his first golf clubs. They were an older set of clubs with the shafts cut down, so they were appropriate for his size. He mostly putzed around in the yard but Jensen remembers it was his mother who took him...
The current pandemic response in Minnesota calls for people staying at home as much as possible to avoid spreading COVID-19. But orders from Gov. Tim Walz do allow for outside activities. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has some rules of the road when heading outdoors at this time. Can I still go outside? Executive Order 20-33 allows people to be outdoors, engaging in activities such as walking, running, and fishing and hunting. Minnesotans can continue to enjoy parks and other public recreation lands. We urge outdoor enthusiasts...
Last week, Gov. Tim Walz announced that schools will continue distance learning through the end of the school year. I wouldn’t normally use this column to air petty annoyances but I’ve noticed some terminology that I want to address. Schools are not “closed” for the year. While the physical buildings are inaccessible, the administrators, teachers, and students are working really hard to figure out how to make distance learning work as best it can. Parents and caregivers are putting in a lot of...
It’s now the sixth week of the “stay at home” order by our Minnesota governor and we are trying to do our best to follow this directive. And now we hear that the schools will not resume this year at all. All I can say is I feel for the students, staff and especially the parents as they go through these trying times. Our senior class will miss their spring sports events, awards banquet, the prom, their class trip and even a graduation ceremony unless some alternative plans can be made soon....
Joyce Angell got to celebrate her 92nd birthday with friends and family Monday despite having to stay in her second-floor room at Carlton's Inter-Faith Care Center. A total of 14 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; daughter Penney and her husband, Del Prevost; and other friends and family members gathered outside with signs and balloons to celebrate their beloved matriarch. The trees outside her window were decorated with lavender and each party guest held a purple balloon. Many waved signs...
A few days before Gov. Walz's decision to keep Minnesota schools closed through the end of the year, I ran out to Wrenshall School to scan materials for my classes. The only person in the building, I walked the hallways and looked into several empty classrooms - desks, books, decorations, teaching materials, all packed away. The senior hallway that had only weeks before bustled with noisy students and slamming lockers now stood silent, locks removed and lockers cleaned out. Although it was...

The Pine Knot News contacted seniors in Cloquet, Esko, Wrenshall and Carlton this past week after they learned the state extended its order to keep students out of schools through the final month of the school year to guard against the spread of COVID-19. Cloquet senior Caleb Swanson, a writer for the Pine Knot News, collected most of the following comments from seniors, including his own. Cloquet Caleb Swanson High school is a funny thing. We get there, we learn, we grow, and we get attached...

Lauretta “Lori” Lee McCollum, 67, of Esko passed away April 30, 2020 at home. She was born August 25, 1952 in Minneapolis to Lyle and Jenny Mae Putnam. Lori worked as a cook at the Black Bear Casino Resort for 10 years, Gramma Polo's Bottle Shoppe and, most recently, at the Rendezvous Sports Bar & Grill in Scanlon. She loved going to the Bayfront Blues Festival in Duluth, and belonged to the Cloquet Cribbage League. Lori was always caring for people and liked to party like a rock star. Lori was...
In a May 1 letter to the clergy and faithful of the Diocese of Duluth, Father James B. Bissonette, diocesan administrator, announced that the temporary measures the diocese had already adopted to protect against the spread of COVID-19 have been extended through May 18. The measures, which include suspension of public Mass and cancellation of gatherings of more than 10 people, had previously been extended through May 4. Under these measures, priests continue to celebrate Masses without a congregation, confession and pastoral care of the sick...
