    Anne Lundquist, Cloquet Public Library|May 3, 2019

Today there is a resurgence of interest in making useful, handmade items from scraps. We call it “repurposing.” In Sweden, it is called “luffarslöjd.” Artist and maker Faith Clover will be visiting the Cloquet Public Library at 6 p.m. Friday, May 10 to show some examples of luffarslöjd. Participants will be able to try out the craft by making a hook or two from wire. Traditionally, items were made out of scrap wire people had around their farms and homes. Jana Peterson, Pine Knot News|May 3, 2019

And then there were six. Over the course of a nearly three-hour working session Monday, Carlton School Board members narrowed down a list of possible long-term options for the school district from 10 to six. After a couple months of long meetings with little progress, it was a Herculean achievement. To start, Carlton board chair LaRae Lehto presented the board with strict rules of engagement, asking that each board member take turns and share his or her top four or five options with minimal...

  • Carlton County Volunteer Highlight

    May 3, 2019

You can fake a lot of things in life, but you can't fake showing up - for yourself or for others. "Showing up" is not a matter of being, it is a matter of doing. Volunteer Rick Ramey knows what it means to show up, noting that he has volunteered for as long as he can remember. When asked why, he simply replies, "It's just part of who I am." When Ramey and his wife moved to Carlton County, he began volunteering as a tutor in the Moose Lake schools and as a Medicare counselor. More recently, he...

  • 'Jacks best ML-WR, lose to Marshall

Dwight Cadwell, Pine Knot News Sports|May 3, 2019

Early in April it looked like Mother Nature was going to provide the kind of spring we have not seen for a while, where Northland sports teams could play a full and normal schedule. As we all know, Mother Nature didn't cooperate with the hopes of local sports teams - the Cloquet baseball team has been no exception. With seven games either postponed or canceled thus far this season, the Lumberjacks were able to get in two games without canceling or rescheduling. Last Friday the 'Jacks were at...

  • Golf team starts fast

Dwight Cadwell, Pine Knot News Sports|May 3, 2019

The Cloquet boys golf team finally got to play in its first meet of the season last weekend and played very well - with a top-three individual finisher and a fourth-place team finish - despite a lack of practice time due to poor weather. The Lumberjacks team finished fourth out of 18 teams overall in the two-day Grand Slam Invitational, which was played at Pokegama Golf Course in Grand Rapids Friday, April 26, and at Eagles Ridge Golf Course in Coleraine Saturday, April 27. Moorhead won the...

  • Carlton dominates diamond

Kerry Rodd, Pine Knot News Sports|May 3, 2019

At six wins and zero losses, the Carlton softball team is steaming through the season, at least as often as the weather allows. The Bulldogs beat Cromwell-Wright 16-1 Tuesday, a game that ended in the fourth inning since Carlton was 15 runs ahead in a cold game at Chub Lake. Carlton Coach Melissa Clark credited a strong junior class with leading the team. "They're a very athletic bunch, and a lot of them have been starting for me since they were in the eighth grade," said Clark, in her fourth...

  • Retiree dartball league wraps up season

    Steve Korby, Pine Knot News|May 3, 2019

September through April, a group of regional male retirees get together at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Cloquet on Friday mornings to try their hand at dartball. Players ranging in age from their late 50s to their late 90s continue to play week after week and year after year, with the league now decades old. The Cloquet league is very informal, with teams chosen randomly each week, which means a new champion each week too. "That's two weeks in a row of my team winning all three games," said 9...

  • Angling 101

Bret Baker, Pine Knot News Outdoors|May 3, 2019

The feedback I receive on my angling articles covers the spectrum. Most people appreciate my stories along with the technical information I share. Others enjoy my articles, but the minutiae of specific techniques can be hard to follow. It’s a good reminder angling doesn’t always have to be overly complicated. With the Minnesota fishing opener fast approaching, this week I will focus on Angling 101. I will discuss species, locations and simple methods for angling success. The first decision is...

  • Cloquet softball team sees mixed results

    Kerry Rodd, Pine Knot Sports|May 3, 2019

It’s been a feast-or-famine type of week for the Lumberjacks softball team. Averaging more than 10 runs per game, the team faced a scoring famine when beaten by Hermantown 6-0 last Friday, then feasted on Ashland, pitching to the tune of 24 runs in just four innings of play. As the home team, Cloquet actually scored 24 runs in three at-bats as the game ended on a mercy rule after the top of the fourth inning. Hermantown-6 Cloquet-0 A much anticipated softball matchup between two teams who are e...

  • What a perfect spring ... for making maple syrup

    May 3, 2019

Wow, what an April, lots of snow and a ton of maple sap. Just as Twins fans remember 1991, ricers remember that great crop with no rice worms, and skiers remember the year of perfect snow, I will remember 2019 as a great year of maple sap flow. This season of tapping maple trees was blessed with the perfect combination of freezing nights and above freezing days lasting for a few weeks, at least where I was tapping. I had a ball, snowshoeing with a sled the first part of the season and ending up...

  • Birding away the month of April

    Ann Markusen, On the Mark|May 3, 2019

"April is the cruelest month," T. S. Elliot penned in his masterpiece, "Four Quartets." When I moved back to Minnesota in 1999, my brother warned me that November, March and April were the worst for outdoors lovers. But I've found my consolations: ice skating and trail clearing in November and spring cross-country skiing in March and April. April is the month that great birding commences. Northwestern Carlton County hosts wonderful viewing sites during April waterfowl and May warbler and...

  • Father-daughter dance is a ball

REACH executive director Dakota Koski said the new venue was excellent. "From the acoustics, the extra space, elegant look, etc. it...
