  • OUR VIEW: USPS needs to admit its faults

    May 5, 2023

There has been an increasing number of rallies organized by United States Postal Service workers in recent months, including one last week by workers in the Twin Cities area. There has also been a sharp uptick in customers in Carlton County wondering about the state of mail delivery these days. We should know. The Pine Knot Knot gets to readers via the mail, and we depend on reliable mail service to get issues to paying readers promptly. Disturbing on our end is the fact that papers are getting to mailboxes later and later and, in some cases ...

  • Korby: Why did Scanlon dominate Cloquet's Little League baseball?

    Steve Korby|May 5, 2023

For the record, in the 1960s the West End of Cloquet produced and developed most of the city’s elite young golfers and future Olympic cross country skiers and ski jumpers. With Cloquet Country Club and the new Pine Valley Ski jump located there, neighborhood kids could walk or ride their bikes to these tremendous facilities. Central and eastern Cloquet kids had the Civic Center indoor gym on Cloquet Avenue and outside basketball hoops at Garfield, Sacred Heart, Pinehurst, Washington and Leech s...

  • Carlton Happenings

    Leola Rodd|May 5, 2023

As Mother’s Day is fast approaching, this is a reminder to get that special mom in your life a very special gift. I have some suggestions that don’t necessarily cost a lot of money. Spend a day with Mom, doing what she wants or maybe cooking a nice meal for her. If gardening is her passion, purchase some seeds or flowers that Mom and you can plant together. Or just give Mom a call (no texts, please) to wish her Happy Mother’s Day on May 14. There are many upcoming events in the Carlton area:...

  • Wright-Cromwell News

    Jennie K. Hanson|May 5, 2023

I just returned from a Happy Trails bus tour to Ohio and Kentucky to the Ark Encounter, Creation Museum, and the Cincinnati botanical gardens and zoo, and a 2-and-a-half-hour dinner cruise riverboat on the Ohio River. I have wanted to visit since I heard about the life-size Noah’s Ark. I did not travel with a roommate, but there were 28 of us on the bus, so I was able to meet many new folks who became friends along the way. Everyone was so friendly and sensitive to my health issues. Traveling b...

    Kerry Rodd|May 5, 2023

The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys high school club lacrosse team opened its season at home in Esko Saturday with an impressive 12-0 win over St. Paul Two Rivers. "It was a really good showing for our team," said CEC coach Danny Benson. The CEC lacrosse program has been quietly, but steadily putting together strong numbers of players as they hope to eventually reach the status of an actual varsity sport. Lacrosse is the fastest-growing sport in the country, and currently 84 high schools in Minnesota...

  • Raptors, Esko softball battle to the bitter end

    Kerry Rodd|May 5, 2023

Local softball rivals kept it interesting on a rainy afternoon Saturday. After trailing Carlton/Wrenshall 7-2 through three innings, Esko scratched and clawed its way back to take an 8-7 win. Esko wasted little time in gaining an advantage and went up 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning with both Avery Kuklinski and Bailey Plante scoring runs. "Esko got the jump on us in the first inning, but we were able to bounce back in the second," said Raptors assistant coach Anna George. Kennedy Siiter...

  • Daring snow racers tackle national event

    Jana Peterson|May 5, 2023

Cloquet High School senior Hannah Sandman was still a youngster when she spotted kids doing tricks at the terrain park at Spirit Mountain. Still relatively new to snowboarding, she instantly wanted to join those kids as they flung themselves off jumps and down rails, doing stunts that combine the twists and turns of a gymnast with downhill daring. Her younger sister, Addison, followed in her footsteps, but with skis rather than the snowboard. Both sisters and another Cloquet student and...

  • Wilderness advance to meet Windigo in second round

    Pine Knot News|May 5, 2023

An unlikely goal-scorer lifted the Minnesota Wilderness to a playoff sweep last weekend, closing out the Kenai River Brown Bears in Soldotna, Alaska, with a 2-1 overtime win in Game 3 of their opening-round playoff series. Michael Quinn’s goal 51 seconds into overtime catapulted the Wilderness into a best-of-five Midwest Division final against the regular season champion Wisconsin Windigo starting this week. “The puck kind of got locked up on the draw, kind of squirted out, and (I) just got to the puck, made a move, and just kind of bla...

    Pine Knot News|May 5, 2023

Esko sweeps round robin The weather broke long enough on April 25 for the Esko, South Ridge and Barnum baseball teams to play a three-game round robin at Wade Stadium in Duluth.
