Carlton County board chairman Dick Brenner brought up continuing planning for a new county jail. Jail plans “We have looked at a number of jails including the newest jail in Chisago County,” Brenner said. “The funding package and the size of the jail are soon to be determined. The newest style of jail is based on pods.” Brenner explained that pods are gro...

  • Community Connections

    Cathy Niemi|May 10, 2019

Many people describe volunteers as being kind or caring people. And it is true. These honorable character traits are often at the heart of service. But do you ever wonder, on a practical level, what motivates volunteers? The following reasons are what we hear most often from our retired volunteers. Some say they are looking for something to do in retirement, while others volunteer for the social aspect. Some simply comment they want to “make a difference,” while others want to give back. They want to be there for others, the same way peo...

    Ann Markusen, On the Mark|May 10, 2019

Teaching K-12 art is a continually creative act. You must imagine projects for kids of various ages, acquire materials on a tight budget, and help as many as 30 kids per classroom fashion distinctive artworks. For Kris Nelson, the newest featured artist at the Pine Knot gallery, a classroom project morphed into a second career. After completing her art degree at the University of Minnesota, Nelson taught in Robbinsdale and Forest Lake schools, then Carlton, followed by 21 years at Wrenshall. A...

  • Cloquet's relay day isn't a normal track day

    Pine Knot News staff|May 10, 2019

Friday's "Cloquet Relays" track meet featured plenty of the usual track and field events, but with a twist. Pole vaulters raced around the track with their poles. Shot put and discus throwers made their tosses, then headed to the track to run their own 4x100-meter race. Kids are encouraged to step outside their comfort zone and try new events, so the results varied widely. But it didn't matter, because the Cloquet Relays are not a normal day at the track. Heck, the coaches even raced Friday....

  • Opener can be a zoo

Bret Baker, Pine Knot News Outdoors|May 10, 2019

If you want peace and quiet, wait till Monday. Minnesota’s fishing opener congregates more fishermen per square acre than any other time of year on productive post-spawn walleye locations throughout the state. Anglers often pack so tightly that with a little coordination and agility you could jump from boat to boat. Over the years I’ve targeted other species or fished smaller bodies of water to avoid the masses. Recently I’ve grown to embrace the chaos and enjoy the spectacle, knowing opene...
