The team opened with a tight 3-2 win over eighth seed Hibbing last week but then they upended North Branch 11-2 Saturday. But the frosting on the cake was when the Lumberjacks came from...

The sun had just dipped below the horizon when my rod doubled over. For the last half hour before sunset, we had battled several northern pike, but instinctively I knew this was our first walleye. White-tipped fins emerged from the black water below and my suspicions were confirmed. Joseph slid our net under the fish and we boxed our first keeper. Repeating the same trolling path we added several more walleyes as darkness enveloped us. As is often the case with night fishing, we had the lake to...
Most people like pickles. Whether it's genuine dill pickles or kosher, sweet, bread and butter, or Gherkin ... nearly all have a favorite pickle. But for a growing number of Cloquet and Carlton County residents, their favorite pickle would be a game called pickleball. And it has nothing to do with pickled cucumbers. Pickleball is a relatively new game. It originated in 1965 in the backyard of a home in a suburb of Seattle called Bainbridge Island. Several gents came home after a round of golf...
A request for proposals for a new Carlton County jail has been approved by the Carlton County Board of Commissioners, as planning for the new jail continues to unfold. The vote was 4-1 with Commissioner Tom Proulx voting against. “This action by the board is not locking us into a set contract or design,” Sheriff Kelly Lake said. “A site should be chosen as soon as possible in order to have construction drawings in which we will approximately know how much the facility will cost. We are committed to an 84-bed facility.” The site of the current...

Tim Walz yet to sign the set of state budget bills the Legislature passed over the weekend, Cloquet Area Fire District chief Kevin Schroeder said he was “95 percent sure” that the fire district got one of its three three requests. Language that will allow CAFD to bond and incur debt is included in the omnibus bill that passed both the House and the Senate. The new language fixes changes made to the bill that created the fire district in 2009. With the fix, the fire district could bond...
