The South Ridge baseball team continued its magical season last Thursday with an impressive 14-0 Section 7A championship over the North Woods Grizzlies. The victory gave the Panthers a shot in the state tournament on Tuesday, where they fell 8-3 in a grinding 10-inning game to Springfield in St. Cloud. “It was a heck of a game to be a part of today,” said Aaron Weber, head coach of the Panthers Tuesday. “If you would have told me our pitcher would throw a no-hitter through five innings, I would...
In Thursday's boys Section 7A meet, Moose Lake/Willow River had four first-place finishes, but that was not enough to overcome the depth of the teams which finished in first and second. The Rebels grabbed first place in the 4x200-meter and 4x800 relays and then got second place in the 4x100 relay behind South Ridge. The Rebels won the 4x200 in 1:34.37, the 4x800 in 8:20.25, and then ran a 45.18 in the 4x100, which was second to the South Ridge's 44.91. The boys title went to...

Very quietly, the Barnum softball team put together a solid year. That year was rewarded with a run to the Section 7A title game last week, where they fell to Cherry 14-0. “It was a great season and I am so proud of the girls,” said Barnum coach Dusty Collelo. “I really think this will give the girls a lot of incentive to try and win the section next season.” The Bombers had a chance to gain the early lead when they got a double with one out from Kayelea Poirer. Poirer eventually advanced to third, but couldn’t score when Cherry induced J...

When I think about how the Ojibwe have helped shape this great state, I tend to separate the ways we have influenced the land from the ways we have influenced its people. Maybe I do this because the Ojibwe worldview could not conceive of influencing the land, or aki (earth). So any notion of who influences what must be turned upside down and inside out by asking: “In what ways has aki shaped us? In what ways has everything about this land and sky, this place called Minnesota—all things animate, inanimate, and spiritual—shaped the Ojibw...

There aren't too many requirements for the new high ropes course that opened Saturday in Scanlon: you simply have to be 8 years old or older, at least 35 pounds and not over 275 pounds. No experience is necessary. "It's like a pace-yourself kind of course, no need to race through it," said Cliff Langley, owner and operator of High Ropes Minnesota, a sister company of Swiftwater Adventures, which offers whitewater rafting on the St. Louis River. High Ropes is a five-pole course that features 12...
