    Emily Swanson|Jun 28, 2019

You might have read about the results of the Blandin Foundation's Rural Pulse survey - it's sweet news about us and our neighbors. More than eight in 10 folks (84 percent) living in our part of rural Minnesota say they are able to make a positive impact in their community, and that the community works together effectively. The transition of Doug and Diane's Finke's Berry Farm to Steve Schulstrom and Rita Vavrosky's Spectrum Farm Strawberries is evidence that these positive statistics reflect...

The ninth annual Cloquet Sawdust 5K will start off the day's festivities at 8 a.m. at Pinehurst Park. Participants will make their way through the western roads and hills of Cloquet and finish right back at Pinehurst, probably a little more tired than when they began. On the bright side, they are...

On April 14, 2000, a vehicle carrying Tom and Marcia Braun and their family, and children who were friends of the family rolled over in Illinois as the group was headed for Florida for a vacation. Both Tom and Marcia died in the crash, as did family friend 13-year-old Ashley Abrahamson. The tragedy shook the community, and yet also brought it together to help both families deal with the horrific event. A few months later, the Cloquet Area Youth Baseball/Softball board elected to name the new...

  • Pine Knot Outdoors: As seasons turn, so does the bite

    Bret Baker|Jun 28, 2019

I half-walked, half-skipped to my truck. I had just polished off my second week of teaching summer school. Much like the fish I’ve been chasing, I’m transitioning to my summer pattern. In the last two weeks, I’ve fished the St. Louis River, Island, Chub, Big, Pike, Sturgeon, Pelican, Gunflint, and Saganaga. What I’ve gathered, besides filets, is that fish are transitioning from their spring locations and patterns to their summer haunts. The crappies are almost all past spawn. I’m no longer co...

    Department of Natural Resources|Jun 28, 2019

Pollinators are key to Minnesota's environmental health. Without them, we wouldn't have some of our favorite foods. They are vital to a healthy environment. They're also beautiful and fascinating to watch. They're pollinators, and this week is dedicated to understanding, appreciating and helping them. Bees, butterflies and hummingbirds are needed to pollinate plants that provide Minnesota food crops such as fruits, vegetables and herbs. Some of these foods are important for wildlife, too. Black...

Johnson said he saw the mother and one fawn earlier in the day, and tried to give them plenty of space. Later, he spied these two little ones, and snapped a photo. Johnson said he has seen a mother and fawn in his yard a few times since then, but wasn't sure if they were the same group. According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, people should not assume fawns are orphans when they find...
